Dear Career Services Professionals/CSCU Colleagues: Hi and hope all is well! I am sure that many of you have heard that Transform CSCU 2020 is rapidly moving forward with a variety of initiatives that have been identified to strengthen the CSCU system. I have been called upon to be a Lead for the Student Services initiative focusing on ENHANCING CAREER SERVICES. My initial colleagues and working team members on this task are Kellie Byrd Danso, Ken Poppe, and Julie Greene. We have had preliminary discussions and are now reaching out for feedback, comments and suggestions. The Board of Regents feels that for Transform CSCU 2020 to reach full potential, it needs involvement from faculty and staff across the system. As a first step, our small team has been charged with developing proposed milestones (designed to enhance career services), and I have been asked to present them to the executive steering committee for a rigor test in early November. Ultimately, the agreed upon milestones will serve as roadmap to move the initiative forward. This is an opportunity for everyone offering Career Services to put some ideas on the table that can strengthen “best practices” across the CSCU system and have a positive impact on the populations we serve. At this point, the team has developed 10 milestones that can be discussed and refined. Please review the milestones below and send comments or suggestions to me by Wednesday, September 24, 2014.

Colleagues, By way of this brief email I would like to inform you of our continued progress on the initiative for Enhancing Career Services as part of Transform CSCU 2020. Yesterday, we held our first small focus group meeting at Manchester Community College. Attendance and participation was positive and I would like to bring you up to date. The small focus group: • Reviewed the draft of the milestones that were shared with you in an earlier email. We refined these milestones

and made a few additions in response to some of the feedback received. • Refined the questions for the planned system-wide Career Service survey that will provide an overview of

resources, activities, services, etc. offered. • Plans to create an online survey using Survey Monkey that will be sent to Career Services Directors in the next

four to six weeks. We ask that all Career Service Directors within the CSCU system complete the survey. Once the survey data has been collected, the plan is to schedule a statewide meeting of all CSCU Career Directors in the near future to share the compiled results. At this meeting we will continue the discussion and develop a plan regarding the final report to be submitted to the BOR and all the CSCU presidents with recommendations and steps to enhance Career Services across the CSCU system.

UPDATE ON SMALL FOCUS GROUP MEETING SENT TO ALL CSCU CSD’s On October 17, 2014

Enhancing Career Services Milestones

1. Create a focus committee (five members) of CSCU Career Services professionals to join an Enhancing Career Services planning team. (To identify and assess system wide best practices and access activities, programs and resources) 2. Schedule a planning meeting with the small focus committee. 3. Explore the scheduling of regular meetings of all CSCU Career Services personnel to assist in streamlining services, sharing resources, building capacity and building linkages. (This expanded group could carry out the exploratory work by the focus committee and serve as the impetus for development of additional milestones and development of the road map. 4. Assess if Career Services function is available at all campuses and identify other functions attached to the office (i.e., Veterans, Advising, Counseling, and Experiential Learning). Develop a mapping/charting tool to identify the range of services offered at each institution and address potential inequities that might exist in the system.

19

Page 20: Transform 2020 Roadmap: Evening and After Hour Support · Findings •Student services could be organized in a one ... COMMITTEE MEETING ... it needs involvement from faculty and

DRAFT – for discussion

5. Determine if credit/non-credit career exploration courses are offered at the various campuses. (Currently what kinds of courses are being offered? What works well)? 6. Catalog current “web based” resources being utilized across system (Career Exploration, Resume Writing, Interviewing) to begin discussion on strengths/merits and to determine if cooperative leasing of programs would be cost effective. 7. Discuss the potential of creating a statewide database of employment and career opportunities encouraging a cooperative sharing of information. (What kind of databases are currently in use? Might a cooperative effort be identified resulting in enhanced student/ employer utilization?) 8. Explore the development of a common name for the Career Services function across the campuses. Currently there is disparity across the system making it potentially confusing for users. (Would a common name be beneficial and would a name change be more of a problem that benefit?)

20

Page 21: Transform 2020 Roadmap: Evening and After Hour Support · Findings •Student services could be organized in a one ... COMMITTEE MEETING ... it needs involvement from faculty and

9. Identify current ratios between students and Career Services staffing based on FTE or Total headcount across the CSCU system 10. Schedule an annual conference/meeting of CSCU Career Services professionals in order to share mapping survey data, share information on best practices and successful programs or initiatives. 11 Share draft report on Enhancing Career Services with CSCU Career Services Directors 12. Share draft report on Enhancing Career Services with the Executive Steering Committee 13. Finalize report on Enhancing Career Services and submit to BOR and college and university presidents summarizing finding and recommendations. 14. Schedule a debrief meeting with key stakeholders and institutional leaders to discuss implementation plan regarding Enhancing Career Services initiative’s recommendations.
