Rapidtransformationisurgentlyontheagenda:humankindisonthebrinkofmeltingtheGreenland

andAntarcticicecaps,disruptingtheresilienceanddiversityofthebiosphere,affectingatmospheric

andoceaniccirculationandendangeringtheveryplanetaryfoundationsuponwhichhumanprogress

hasrested.Transitioningawayfromthecombustion-based,increasinglyoutdatedmodesof

operationofthe19thand20thcenturytomoreadvanced,sustainablepracticesinthe21stcentury

nowreliesonvigorousself-amplificationoftransformativeprocessescurrentlybeginninginlightof

growingscientificunderstanding.

ThesuccessoftheParisclimateagreementisbynomeansensured;fulfillingitsobjectivesrequires

ratcheting-upofambitionsthroughsocial,politicalandeconomicprogress.Italsorequiresdebunking

mythsofallowableovershooting,climateengineeringandno-regretsadaptation.Onthecontrary,

renewableenergiesareaprogrammeofpotentialempowermentofthepoor,making

decarbonisationoneofthegreatprogrammesfordevelopmentinthiscentury.Thecoredynamicsof

thisprogrammelieincivilisatoryprogressinallofitsforms:social,cultural,politicalandeconomic.

Thechallengeforscienceistwofold:toconsiderthebiophysicalEarthwithitshumanworldsasone

wholesystem,andtoconsidertheopportunitiesandconstraintsinthedynamicsofthesocialand

technologicalsystemsthatcansaveEarthfromleavingthestableHolocene.Thissymposiumwill

considerthepost-Parisneedtowideningtheviewtowardahandfulofcriticalco-transformations

thatwouldallowpathwaystowardssustainableglobaldevelopment,andprocessesoftheir

amplificationtowardtippingintothemainstream.Maintainingplanetaryboundariesiscriticalas

muchforreasonsofenvironmentalstabilityasitisforjustice,buttimeisshort.“Transformation

now!”isclearlyonthetableforhumankindasacentennialtask.
