Application

Transformers supplying electric circuits or equipment in hospital rooms (e.g., bedrooms, examination rooms, operati-on theaters, etc.). Isolating transformers are preferably used in IT systems and rooms with group 2 medical (appli-cation) equipment, i.e. the isolating transformer must not switch off automatically and conform to the standard forpermanent incorporation in protection class II (without protective conductor and with double or extra strong insula-tion of all parts of the transformer). The transformer is available for protection class I on request. The required pro-tection class should expressly be specified in the order

The following technical explanations provide useful informa-tion on important technical terms used in this catalog.Depending on the proposed use, additional or differentdefinitions may be required. The following explanations aretherefore not exhaustive.

FusingFusing at the primary side is somewhat of a problem becau-se the inrush current can be as high as 20 times the ratedinput current, which depends on the size and type of thetransformer. For this reason, the input side fusing in mostcases provides protection only against short circuit and thefuses are slow-blowing.Picking the right fuse on the secondary side is much easierbecause due to the attenuating effect of the primary win-ding, current peaks are not possible at the secondary side.Possible fuse protection for the secondary side:- Miniature fuse to EN 60127- Automatic circuit breaker type B/C

TapsTransformers can be made with primary side or secondaryside taps. Primary-side taps serve the adaptation to differentmains alternating voltages. If the taps keep within the rangeof +5%, no other transformer size is needed. Taps outsidethis range require the next bigger type.

An exception is when a winding is divided into two equalparts. In this case, no additional winding space is neededand the transformer can still be designed for two input vol-tages.If several secondary voltages are available, the taps aredesigned for the amperage of the highest voltage, unlessthe customer specifies otherwise.

As a consequence of this, the full rated output cannot betapped. If the output is needed at every voltage level, morewinding space is needed, i.e., a bigger transformer mayhave to be used. An exception is again when the winding isdivided into two and is followed by series or parallel con-nection.

Duty ratio, DRThe duty ratio (DR) of a transformer is the ratio betweenload time and cycle duration. Unless specified otherwise,the cycle duration is 10 min.

The reduction factor, f, indicates the possible reduction ofthe size in comparison with continual service.

Insulation structureThe following structures are possible:- Transformers with basic insulation (e.g., power trans-

formers for general service, control transformers)- Transformers with double or extra stroinsulation

(e.g.,safety isolating or isolating transformers)- Transformers without insulation between input and output

Insulation classesThe provisions of IEC 85 and IEC 216 describe the heat resi-stance if insulation classes.

Normally, we design transformers according to class B alt-hough most materials can resist much higher temperatures(e.g., copper wire and impregnating resin are at leastclass F resistant).

Short time operation If the design rating for continuous operation is smaller thanthe rated output, the transformer can be overloaded forshort periods provided it does not heat to more than the per-mitted overtemperature.

Short-circuit resistanceThe following distinctions are made:

Unconditionally short-circuit resistant transfomersare dimensioned in such a way that the temperature underoverload or short circuit conditions does not exceed the per-mitted limits. To ensure this, the size must at least be double,and the no-load voltage is significantly higher than the ratedvoltage.

Conditionally short-circuit resistant transformershave a built-in protection mechanism which opens the inputor output circuit when the transformer is overloaded or short-circuited (e. g., fuses, thermal links, PTC thermistor, thermalswitch).

Transformers without short-circuit resistance must be protected against overload or short circuit by amechanism that is not integrated in the transformer. This pro-tection must be provided by the user.

OutputThe rated output is the product of the rated output voltageand the rated output current (with 3-phase transformers, it is3 times the product). In case of several output voltages, therated output is the sum of the products of the rated outputvoltage and the rated output current of all circuits underload at a time.The design rating is defined as the output assigned to a sizewhich is defined by design characteristics.

Connection symbolsThe interconnection of the windings is identified by connecti-on symbols. A connection symbol consists of a capital, asmall letter and a number designating the phase relation.The capital letter stands for the primary winding and thesmall letter for the secondary winding. If no customization isrequired, 3-phase transformers are normally delivered instar-star connection.

If the star point conductor of the feeding system is solidlyconnected to the input-side star point of the transformer, thestart point can be loaded with the rated current, otherwiseonly with about 10 % of the phase-to-phase current.

Protection index

The protection index marking consists of a code of two con-stant letters, viz. "IP" and two digits, e.g., IP 23.

Ambient temperature

If no non-standard ambient conditions are specified in theorder, the transformer is designed for ta=40°C. If the actualtemperature is higher, the rated output must be reduced asshown in the following figure.

WindingsSeparated windingsIn these transformers, the windings must not be in live contactwith each other, i.e., these windings are electrically isolatedfrom each other. Power is transferred only by induction.

General Terms of Business 01/2002II..

I. GeneralBy placing the order, the buyer accepts these "General Terms of Business" asexcusive basis for transaction of business. Buyer's terms, if any, are herebyexpressly excluded and do not apply even in absence of our express objection.Any other agreements are only valid if made in writing.

IIII.. II. PricesOur prices are without obligation and quoted ex works without packaging andin EURO currency, exclusive of value-added tax, which will be charged at therate applicable at the time of delivery. Copper prices of 150.00 EUR or morefor each 100 kg lead to price adjustment prorated the specified weight.

IIIII.. III. Terms of payment/setting off1. Payment due to us is defined in calendar terms (§ 286 cl. 2 no. 1 BGB -

German Civil Code) and mature 30 days after invoice date.

2.-All payments must be made free supplier's point of payment; discount at 2%can be deducted from all payments made within 10 days of the invoice date.Deliveries to unknown buyers are only made COD.

3. The buyer can only set off payments which are not in dispute or are the sub-ject of a final court judgment.

IV. Contract conclusion /deliveries 1. Orders to agents, any collateral agreement, amendments and modifications

are only binding on us if made in writing.

2. Dimensions, output data and illustrations correspond to the specified products;deviations are expressly reserved.

3. All shipments are made ex works at buyer's risk. The risk passes to buyerwhen the consignment in a state ready for use has been shipped or collec-ted. This also applies to all shipments made free, in our own fleet of trucks orif the goods are consigned to buyer's order. Partial shipments which thebuyer can reasonably be expected to accept are permitted.

4. Goods shall be accepted immediately upon completion. If buyer delaysacceptance, we can charge warehousing cost at 0.5% of the invoice amountfor every month, including fractions thereof, subject to a maximum of 5% ofthe value of the goods.

5. All shipments are made by the agreed date as far as possible. We areresponsible for delays only in cases of intent or gross negligence and ifacting under the constraints of law provided the buyer can submit poof of thedamage caused. The damage is limited to 5% of the value partial delivery ordelivery which is delayed. Force majeure is cause for a reasonable extensionof the delivery period.

V. Liability for defectsWe are responsible for defects as defined in §§ 434, 435 BGB as follows:

1. All parts or services which become unusable or whose usability is substantial-ly limited for reasons before the passing of risk, in particular due to defects oftype, defective material or poor workmanship, within 60 months - irrespectiveof the operating time - calculated from the date at which the risk passed, shallat buyer's option be repaired free, delivered new or made new. Any defect must be communicated to us in writing without delay. The term forelectronic devices is 36 months. If buyer's choice (repair or replacement)entails unreasonably high cost, we can refer the buyer to a version which isless expensive for us.

2. Buyer must allow us reasonable time and opportunity for repairing a defect. Otherwise we are released from our liability for the defect.

3. Any other claims by buyer on us are excluded unless such claims are sub-stantiated in applicable law. Damage claims on grounds of impossibility ofperformance for which we are responsible or due to unavoidable statutoryrequirements are limited to 10 % of the value of that part of the deliverywhich cannot be used as intended.

VI. Retention of title1. All goods shipped remain our property until full payment of all amounts due

to us from the business transaction with the buyer is made or if payment ismade by check or draft until paid. The buyer can dispose of the goods in theordinary course of business.

2. The retention of title also extends to the full value of all products made by pro-cessing, mingling or combining our goods and we are also considered to bethe maker of these products. If in the processing, mingling or combination ofour goods with goods belonging to a third party that party's title survives, weacquire co-ownership in the new goods in the value represented by therespective invoice amounts of the processed goods.

3. Buyer assigns to us all claims on third parties created by the sale of the pro-cessed goods as security in the full amount or in the amount of our co-owner-ship (sub-article 2). Buyer can collect these amounts for our account until can-cellation or completion of buyer's payments to us.

4. Any seizure by a third party of goods or moneys belonging to us must becommunicated to us by buyer in writing without delay.

5. The goods and payment claims in lieu of goods must not be pledged or offered as security or assigned unless full payment has been made to us.

6. If the value of the securities exceeds the amount due to us by more than 20%, we will release an appropriate part of the securities in our option if so requested by the buyer

VII. Place of performance / legal venue1. Place of performance for supplies and payments is Heiligenstadt/Ofr. or

Jena.

2. If the buyer is a general merchant, the legal venue, including for summaryproceedings, is Bamberg or Jena.

3. The contract is subject to material German law to the exclusion of the UNConvention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods (CISG).

VIII. SeverabilityIf a provision of these General Terms of Business should be or become invalid,such invalidity does not affect the other provisions. The provision lacking validitywill be replaced by another provision which as nearly as possible reflects theoriginal intention. If this is not possible, the contract is invalid if continuing itwould entail unreasonable hardship for either party.
