04 LED Lighting for Tennis

Change is here !
• New LED systems are being designed and installed for outdoor courts.
• Existing Metal Halide systems are being redesigned on the basis of LED
• Local Authorities : Only LED schemes permitted in some cases
Last five years
• Very high capital costs £ 25,000 + per court • Very limited range of manufacturers / products • Some installation contractors very reluctant to move over
to LED • Constant change & upgrading of fittings : every few months
/ obsolete fittings
• PRINCIPAL PLAYING AREA – Area bounded by court markings
• TOTAL PLAYING AREA – Area of court markings plus 2.50m to the sides
and 4.50m to the run backs
LTA AREAS OF PERFORMANCE
PPA & TPA LAYOUT
LTA PERFORMANCE STANDARDS
1) Minimum Performance 400 Lux PPA (0.7 Uniformity) 300 Lux TPA (0.6 Uniformity)
2) Recommended Performance 500 Lux PPA (0.7 Uniformity) 400 Lux TPA (0.6 Uniformity)
LTA PERFORMANCE STANDARDS
The performance standards can be applied as follows :- INDIVIDUAL COURT
Standard has to be achieved when one court is operating only. Best for all scheme design (combined uplift when all courts operating)
LTA PERFORMANCE STANDARDS
The performance standards can be applied as follows :-
ON A BLOCK BASIS When all courts in a block are operating. Downside that all courts have to operating to achieve the standard. Lower overall level of illumination. Lower capital costs.
PPA & TPA Measurement Grids
PPA : 15 points equally spaced horizontally and vertically over the area.
TPA : 35 points equally spaced horizontally and vertically over the area.
L.T.A. have defined the above.
Tennis Courts in Blocks
• Use of P.P.A. in court blocks remains unchanged.
• T.P.A. area remains the same however the measurement grid is adjusted to reflect play not generally occurring beyond the center line of the intermediate between adjacent courts.
LTA Standard – Min. or Rec. • Use of L.T.A. recommended standards can create areas
with very high levels of illumination – over 1000 lux with adjacent courts.
• LTA generally use minimum standard for Parks & Clubs
• Planners seek to reduce sky glow (i.e. upward light) and obtrusive light to neighbors' (i.e. spill light and glare) and for surrounding ecology.
• Low level schemes are generally favored by planners. Feedback from park schemes
• Planners are very familiar with lighting designs and will request the highest level of information for planning applications.
Problems moving over to LED
• Fittings are very different :-
LED Fittings
Main Benefits of LED
1. More efficient : 2 – 4 Kw per court 2. Less maintenance : no lamps 3. Instant on/off – no warn up / hot strike 4. Individual control of lights 5. Combines better the access technology 6. Greater range of column heights 7. Initial performance level retained
LED Installations Main Disadvantages of LED
1. Capital Cost : £ 15,000 – 25,000 + per court 2. Problems of controlling light spillage
- may require physical barriers for screening - limited use of deflectors by some manufacturers
3. Can give rise to high glare for court users 4. Heavier fittings for retrofit i.e. column replacement 5. Limited number of manufacturers 6. Life time of fittings may unknown – warranty issues
