Green IT efforts focus on using computing resources efficiently Helping governments to protect environment

Public Service Delivery and OSSGreen IT

“ICT is responsible for 1 billion tonnes of CO2 emissions each year” – Gillian Meron, UK Cabinet Office Minister, September 2007

“IT clearly contributes to energy consumption and pollution, but also offers ways to reduce environmental impact.” – Gartner, April 2007

Page 30: Transforming Public Service Delivery Through OSS

30Unit Pemodenan Tadbiran dan Perancangan Pengurusan Malaysia

Developments in IT hardware and software accelerated Green IT initiatives

Energy efficient hardware in smaller footprint Advanced resource management features in system software

OSS solutions further boosted Green IT efforts No license fee Many viable alternatives available Easily downloadable from Internet Support from community / vendor available

Public Service Delivery and OSSGreen IT – Resource Consolidation

Paying for unused computing power !

Computing resources not used efficiently

“One server, one application” trend

Increase in servers require more power, cooling and space

Increase in energy cost Servers are under-utilized

Virtualization can consolidate server resources effectively

Fully utilize server capacity

Reduce servers used

OSS can extend product lifespan Source code included

Modifications can be made to support or interoperate with older hardware technology

No risk against financial collapse of vendors or vendors withdrawing support for product

Lightweight feature (no software bloat) Older desktop/server with lesser resources can still be used

to run software OpenOffice.org is able to run on desktops with 256MB

memory
