ADVERTISER.COM.AU WEDNESDAY JANUARY 20 2016 NEWS 03 V1 - ADVE01Z01MA SOUTH Australian chiroprac- tors are claiming they can treat children’s asthma, ADHD and bed-wetting – de- spite no evidence. A range of websites also claim they can treat colic, ear infections, scoliosis, and sleep- ing problems. Top clinic Chiro- practic Wellness hints it can treat asthma and a wide range of other health issues, and when The Advertiser asked if they could cure asthma in children, the reply was “absolutely”. But owner Andrew Timbs – the immediate past president of SA’s Chiropractic Association of Australia – said chiropractors never “treat” anything. “We see a lot of kids with asthma and those types of things and absolutely there’s next to no kids that don’t im- prove from chiropractic,” he said. “But we never specifi- cally treat someone for a spe- cific condition, we adjust the spinal nervous system so the body can heal itself.” There is growing criticism of the Chiropractic Board and the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency amid pres- sure to stamp out “false and misleading” claims in the indus- try. Dr Ken Harvey, from Mo- nash University’s department of epidemiology and preventive medicine, says change is need- ed because false claims lead people away from proper treat- ments. “It’s also detrimental to your bank balance,” he said. AHPRA and the Chiroprac- tic Board said they were “work- ing with other regulators to act on concerns about potentially false or misleading advertising by a small number of chiro- practors”. Some have been re- ferred to the ACCC, while others may be taken to court. “The vast majority of practi- tioners have responded to the first AHPRA warning letter and amended their advertising, eliminating the need for and cost of further regulator ac- tion,” they said in a statement.
