T h e b e g i n n i n g s a n d development of higher education in Braşov originate in the city’s old cultural traditions and intense cultural climate. Here, the technical and scientific innovation, the creative artistic activity, and the intensive studies conducted in numerous schools of all levels, merge in perfect harmony. The significant milestones of the beginnings and acknowledgement of this cultural centre include the First Romanian School, established five centuries ago, deacon Coresi’s first Romanian language prints, ‘Johannes Honterus’ German High School, ‘Áprily

Lajos’ Hungarian High School, the maintenance of the national spirit, led by the famous man of letters George Bariţiu, and ‘Gazeta de Transilvania’ founded by the same literary man, ‘Astra’ cultural association, which had a leading role in the formation of national consciousness, the first Romanian School of Commerce, as well as the contributions of great personalities, such as: Andrei Mureşanu, Gheorghe Dima, Iacob Mureşianu, Octavian Goga, St. O. Iosif, Sextil Puşcariu, Valeriu Branişte, Tiberiu Brediceanu, Ilie Cristea and many others.

Brief History of the University

1948 ‐ Establishment of the Ins�tute of Silviculture1949 ‐ Establishment of the Ins�tute of Mechanics1953 ‐ The Ins�tute of Silviculture becomes the Forestry Ins�tute; and the

Polytechnic Ins�tute of Braşov is subsequently established by the merger of the Forestry and the Mechanics Ins�tutes

1959 ‐ Establishment of the Wood Engineering Department within the Polytechnic Ins�tute

1960 ‐ Establishment of the Pedagogic Ins�tute (Mathema�cs, Physics ‐ Chemistry, Biology), and later on, in 1969, of the Music Department

1964 ‐ The Manufacturing Engineering Department is established within the Polytechnic Ins�tute

1971 ‐ The University of Braşov is established by the merger of the Polytechnic and the Pedagogic Ins�tutes

1991 ‐ Upon the proposal of Braşov University Senate, by the Decision of the Romanian Government, on 4 January 1991, and the Order no. 4894 / 22 March 1991, of the Minister of Educa�on and Science, the new name of the university thus becomes Transilvania University of Braşov.

of higher education, with a tradition of over half a century, has the mission to provide and develop the resources and tools necessary for conducting the education and scientific research processes, at high quality standards, with a view to ensuring its competitiveness in the European Higher Education and Research Area.

The university evolves in the alert and dynamic rhythm of knowledge‐based society, relying on its strong and dedicated teaching staff, who coordinate numerous multi‐disciplinary national and international projects,

both scientific and didactic, and who organize high‐class international conferences and reunions.

Every year, Transilvania University of Braşov is a destination of choice for hundreds of students and professors engaged in academic‐exchange programmes, coming from all European Union countries; and, at the same time, the university is represented by its students and professors, at education and research activities, conducted in over 250 universities from Europe and other cultural spaces, in the framework of collaboration agreements.

CUTTING‐EDGE AND HIGH‐PERFORMANCE LABORATORIES

The fundamental objective of development for the period 2016‐2020 is the strengthening of Transilvania University of Brașov, as a reference institution, both nationally and internationally, in generating and disseminating advanced knowledge, as well as its integration in the European Higher Education and Research Area.

The current study programmes are the result of an extensive restructuring process, aimed at ensuring the quality and competitiveness of the didactic processes, as well as the compliance with the European labour market for graduates. Their underlying curricula have been developed according to the needs identified in the economic and social‐cultural environment, and they correspond to similar study programmes conducted in renowned European universities.

The permanent adaptation of the Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD study programmes to the requirements of society have led to integrated study routes Bachelor’s–Master’s–PhD (LMD), with a modern and flexible structure, accessible to students from the very moment of their admission.

This innovative offer of study programmes enables the secondary‐education graduates’ choosing the study route which best suits their abilities and skills.

All faculties of the university have developed modern laboratories, for the students’ benefit, which cover all Bachelor’s and Master’s study programmes, which are endowed with cutting‐edge equipment, IT infrastructure, hard and software specific to the various knowledge fields.

The university directly collaborated with several companies which made investments in developing well‐equipped teaching laboratories. The use thereof by the students provides their specialized training, and forms a highly qualified human‐resource potential, for the investing companies and the wider labour market.

INTEGRATED STUDY STRUCTURES – AN INNOVATIVE AND FLEXIBLE OFFER

In recent years, the university has made significant investments, in order to increase the quality of the infrastructure required for a teaching process. high‐performance

A number of 58 auditoriums were modernized and over 367 teaching laboratories were developed. An eLearning platform was launched in 2008, with a view to providing modern teaching–learning–evaluation

instruments. Accessing this platform is facilitated by the six computer‐rooms open to all students, and especially by the free internet available in all residence halls.

Besides, the modernization of all spaces within the university residence halls, which fully cover the student accommodation needs, is another permanent concern of the university.

A modern space, developed at the highest standards, is Transilvania University Library of Brașov. The automated library, with access to online databases, with large reading rooms, is a destination frequently attended by students, open for learning and expanding their knowledge.

HIGH‐QUALITY TEACHING PROCESS

PRESTIGIOUS AND DYNAMIC SCIENTIFIC RESEARCHScientific research has been structured by priority, interdisciplinary fields, capable of

ensuring a leading position nationally, and a successful integration in the European Research Area. Following an internal‐evaluation process, 21 scientific‐research centres emerged in the university, each of them with its own management structure, staff and infrastructure, yet all orienting their research of excellence towards the development of innovative high‐tech products.

The renewal and development of the human resources needed in research is supported by the Interdisciplinary Doctoral School and by the Master’s Degree research programmes, which are coordinated by the scientific‐research departments.

The efficient and synergetic use of both existing and developing resources, is a significant part of the university strategy, materialized in the major project of the Research and Development Institute, R & D, of High‐Tech Products for Sustainable Development, PRO‐DD.

The Institute has distributed its high‐performance infrastructure in 12 specialized laboratories, available to the 28 research centres, as well as for collaboration with other national and European research units, and with research departments of various companies.

Furthermore, the Institute will be the vital factor in the constitution of a centre of excellence in scientific research, for the 7th ‐ Centre Development Region of Romania, in the field of sustainable energy and development.

THE UNIVERSITY PROMOTES SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

Transilvania University of Brașov is located in the city binding the culture and civilization from both sides of the Carpathians. It enjoys prestige in education and research. It is an active, benefic and dynamic presence in the community’s life, from both an economic, and a socio‐cultural perspective.

By its personalities and achievements, the university is capable of offering a competent and coherent vision for the future, of the development perspectives for Brașov and the 7th ‐ Centre Region of

Romania, as well as of significantly contributing to the effort of promoting and strengthening European values.

Sustainable development is promoted by: partnerships of the university with local and regional bodies, contribution to drafting the Strategy of Sustainable Development of Brașov County, City and Metropolitan Area, participation in achieving the Integrated Urban Development Plan, development of university–industry structures, with a view to promoting innovative high‐tech products: establishment of the Technology and Business Incubator: PRO‐ENERG within the university, establishment of teaching and research laboratories, in cooperation with international companies: Schaeffler, Viessmann, Oracle, Motorola, Horiba, LMS, Stabilus, Miele, Continental, Siemens CT, Renaultimplementation of joint projects with the economic and socio‐cultural environment.Another priority of the recent years has been the development of the relationship with the economic and socio‐

cultural environment. “The Board of the Economic and Cultural Partners of Transilvania University of Brașov” was established and rendered operational. A direct interaction area was set up between the representatives of the leading companies nd the university students (“Companies’ Podium”), and the university signed headquartered in this region, aover 200 partnerships with the local, regional or national authorities, and with companies or institutions in the economic and socio‐cultural environment.

Moreover, providing technical support and research services, or conducting studies for the private environment, and for the authorities or the public institutions, have been a constant in recent years.
