WORK EXPERIENCE

• Every Monday for entire week ( ideally 3 different placements)

• Block 1 Monday 11th Nov – Friday 15th Nov

• Block 2 Monday 10th Feb – Friday 14th Feb

• We are flexible with students but must be in writing from parent/guardian

• Fully covered under school insurance

Young Social Innovators (YSI)

• The Young Social Innovators Programme invites students to make radical and innovative suggestions for change that can make a real and positive difference to people’s lives.

• YSI encourages young people to get involved in social awareness and social action in their community.

• Working in teams, students identify a social issue they would like to make a positive difference to. They research the issue and come up with a social action that will improve the wellbeing of people and society.

Human Growth and Development (RSE)

• To help young people understand and develop friendships and relationships.

• To promote an understanding of sexuality.

• To promote a positive attitude towards one’s own sexuality and in one’s relationships with others.

• To promote knowledge of and respect for reproduction.

• To enable young people to develop attitudes and values concerning their sexuality in a moral, spiritual and social framework.

Science competitions

• Students will have the opportunity to get involved in a variety of different science projects/competitions that can be presented via film, project and poster format.

• Includes small scale within school and national and international projects.

• 2019 Young Scientist. Two 6th year Knockbeg College students placed 2nd in their category at national level.

Nutrition

• The overall aim of this module is help students to make dietary choices that will enable them to achieve a healthy lifestyle

• Students will learn to distinguish between healthy and unhealthy food

• Macro and micronutrients distinguished• The obesity epidemic, in Ireland and globally, will be discussed

in the context of it’s personal and economic impact• Healthy cooking• Sports Nutrition

• Trains students to confidently perform hands-only CPR

• Students also learn:

- how to use an AED

- what to do when someone is choking

- what to do with other injuries and accidents

• 8 week module

• CPR4 Schools certificate on completion

• Ms. Murphy

• 1 class period per week.

• Studies undertaken include;• Roles within the film industry• Varying Genres• Studies from the repertoire of Directors – e.g. Alfred

• Links will be made with films on the Leaving Certificate English Course, specifically the study of Literary Genre, Cultural Context, General Vision and Viewpoint, Theme, Hero/Heroine/Villain.

• Introduction to the atom, developing deep understanding of core concepts within Atomic Structure

• Developing skill working safely with chemicals – symbols, PPE, safety procedures

• Music technology – GarageBand app, Launchpad app (creating backing tracks and writing contemporary songs)

• Practical performance – ukulele playing, body percussion, ‘found-sounds’ (creating music through every-day objects) and singing

• Music theory – basic note-reading, developing listening skills and terminology for musical analysis

• Musical evolution through the eras – study of Baroque, Classical, Romantic and 20th Century Music

• A Graphic Design Project, designing a personal monogram.

• Explore Art History and Appreciation – (Irish, European and Gallery visit)

• Explore and gain an aesthetic appreciation of the history, architecture and environment of their local community. From this students will produce works, learning the processes involved in Art, Craft and Design.

Bank of Ireland junk kouture is an all Ireland competition for secondary schools. Students will learn and explore elements of art through creating costumes encompassing, design, engineering and environmental sustainability and transforms their designs into a finished costume like no other.

1 lesson per week.

The year will comprise of an introduction to the Senior Cycle course. Students will then be able to make an informed decision as to whether it is a viable option for their Leaving Cert.

• Design & Communication Graphics – Introduction to SolidWorks (3D drawing software)

• Technology – Students gain experience marking out, manufacturing and finishing metal, wood and plastic projects using a variety of hand tools, machines and power tools.

• Focus on preparation for Senior Cycle English, particularly in relation to Paper I.

• Students will be expected to read a wide range of material such as novels, poems and newspaper articles.

• 10 week modular basis

• Oral preparation for the Leaving Cert (worth 40% in the exam!)

• ‘Cúpla’ an interesting novel with a modern twist.

• ‘Logainmneacha’ a cultural aspect of the course on place names around Ireland.

• Spanish is spoken in over 20 countries in the world.

• 8 week modular basis

• Language basics – Greetings, ordering in a restaurant, directions

• Cultural Aspect – Festivals in Spain, Spanish Food, Traditional Sports and Music

• Students take part in the Student Enterprise Mini-company, where they form teams and come up with a business idea.

• They have the opportunity to run their own business and make a profit for themselves.

• Successful teams will compete against other schools in the county in the IT in March.
