What is Transition Year?• Transition Year is a one-year programme

after Junior cycle and before Senior cycle.• It is an extra year optional programme• It acts as a bridge between Junior and

Senior Cycle, by facilitating the smooth transition from the more dependent learning of the Junior Cycle to the more independent self-directed learning of the Senior Cycle

Transition Year History

• First introduced into Schools in 1973

• In 501 schools by the Year 2000

• Approx 70-75% of all post-primary schools offer the programme

• It is compulsory in 30% of school.

• Ramsgrange CS have offered and run a very successful TY programme for the past number of years

How do we in Ramsgrange CS help Students achieve these

Aims?Firstly - we provide a broad subject range to keep students engaged with many core and

important subject areas throughout their Transition Year.

Secondly – within these subject areas we have flexibility to offer a more tailored tuition

to suit the ability levels and interests of the students, while still giving them ample

opportunity to engage in valuable learning experiences without the pressure of

examination

• Someone who missed out academically in Junior Cycle

• Someone who is still unsure of what they want to do in the future and wants time to decide

• Students Interested will be given an Application Form in the coming weeks and all students who apply will be Interviewed

Other Considerations

• Not a “doss year”• Get out of it what you put into it• You have to be willing to get involved in all

aspects of TY• Cost – €270 but students did have to pay for

buses also and some trips abroad• Note: Many opportunities to reduce costs

– Mini Enterprises by TY Group/Fundraising by Group– Part time job
