Transparence 2011 – Concept Brief
Saint‐Gobain is back with the most rocking architecture competition Transparence 2011. A
stage where all students of architecture can showcase their talents, compete with each
other and gain exposure to the industry.
Transparence is not just a competition; it’s an attempt to give back to the architecture
industry by identifying new talent and giving youngsters a chance to truly rock the show.
Transparence 2011 brings across the challenge to design “Housing for the future”.
Saint‐Gobain
Saint‐Gobain, a benchmark brand in glass, brings with it a legacy of over three and a half
centuries. A Fortune 500 Company today with operations in more than 64 countries and
annual sales in excess of over € 40 bn., Saint‐Gobain has transcended time and continues to
redefine the standards of glass.
Saint‐Gobain Glass in India is headquartered at the World Glass Complex, Sriperumbudur.
This complex has a wide range of facilities offering architectural glass solutions (Two Float
Glass plants, state of the art Mirror manufacturing line, an advanced Coating line for the
High Performance Glass solutions etc.) and automotive solutions (Lamination and tempering
line for the automotive market). Saint‐Gobain Glass India has the widest range of products
in the country ad aims to be the clear choice for glass solutions in India.
Ethos
Ethos focuses on creating a platform or a forum to spread awareness on relevant issues
among budding architects and civil engineers and among young professionals. This platform
extends to interactions with professionals in different parts of our country and to creating
opportunities for students and young architects. Such a network facilitates easy
dissemination of information and helps build confident young professionals who have been
awake to the situation outside right from the time of joining the graduate program.

TRANSPARENCE 2011 THEME
The Theme ‐ Housing for the future
Shelter has always been one of the basic necessities of man. A human being adapts to the
environment and protects himself in his own shelter. This shelter, that is actually a
derivative of the Latin word sheltron meaning shield, can be in the form of a cave, a small
hut or even a palatial mansion. For each person, the connotation of this word could have a
very different interpretation. However, when some basic tenets of community living are
satisfied, it gives rise to an agglomeration of multiple units as housing which becomes a
place to live in for many.
The population on this earth is increasing drastically owing to which the horizontal spread in
most situations has become difficult and almost impossible. The only way out seems to be a
vertical habitat solution. The limited options that become available are of a low‐rise, high‐
density solution or a high‐rise, low‐density solution. The needs of people vary and one
particular solution can never fit all.
Therefore, what can be the optimised design solution to address this problem? That is what
Transparence 11 aims at exploring!
The theme is particularly appropriate to students since in colleges, a whole semester is
dedicated to the understanding of this field. All colleges can choose to adopt this topic as
their Housing Studio design problem and all students can be judged on par among colleges
across the country.
Background
This proposed development is located at Perungudi, Chennai. The following are attached for
your perusal.
• Google map co‐ordinates as Annexure‐1.
• Photographs as Annexure‐2.
• Physical survey as Annexure‐3.

Vision
To design a unique housing complex, that suits both its residents and neighbourhood and
complements the surrounding neighbourhood. A design that will meet high aesthetic
standards, whilst minimizing energy consumption. The landscaped area should be
appropriately hard‐scaped, soft‐scaped; It should be designed with water bodies, a
children’s play area, jogging track, recreational area, Club house (with gym & swimming
pool) and a multipurpose hall. A design that incorporates attractive Architectural features
which include sustainability, flexibility and quality is sought.
Aspiration
Building on the vision stated above, the entries for housing should
• Surprise, inspire and enthuse
• Utilize high quality design and Architecture
• Reduce energy consumption and impact on the environment
• Be truly sustainable in concept and practice
• Produce modern striking and attractive buildings
• Integrate the building with the immediate surroundings
• Make a connection with the pioneering zeal of sustainable design
• Showcase glass as a sustainable building material
