Transportation Guidelines for Coffin School and Brunswick Jr High School About Transportation support: The McKeen Center pays for students’ transportation to engage with local agencies and schools, when distances to those destinations are prohibitive. Generally, this means distances over 1.5 miles. How far is the trip? BJHS and Coffin School are located 1.0 miles from the McKeen Center. This is a 15-20 minute walk, or a 5-minute bike ride. Expectation: Students are expected to walk or bike to and from BJHS/Coffin except when the weather is prohibitively poor for walking, or in the case of a health or medical condition. “But I don’t have time.” The purpose of taxi service is not to save time for students with extremely tight schedules. Students are expected to incorporate necessary commute times when scheduling their commitments. If your on-campus commitments do not allow you to fit in the commute time plus your activities at Coffin/BJHS, then you do not have time to make the off-campus commitment. About clothing: Students are expected to check the weather forecast, and to have clothing suitable for spending 20 minutes in the elements. This includes waterproof boots, a warm jacket, hat, and gloves. The Dean’s office provides financial assistance for students who are concerned about affording these items. Prohibitively poor weather is loosely defined as any of the following: a downpour or driving snowstorm; hazardous sidewalks; temperature (or wind chill) below 15° F. Bikes and cars • A bike can be a great time saver if you know how to ride. During fair-weather

months, members of the student-run Yellow Bike Club are loaned safe bikes. Look up the club on Blink to ask about current status.

• It may be worth asking around among friends whether anyone can lend you a bike or vehicle (if you have a driver’s license).

• Finally, Brunswick Taxi’s busy operation often involves delays for student pickups. Even if you use a cab for some off-campus activities, build into your plans the possibility of a cab that arrives later than you had wished.
