    BERICHT DES PRÄSIDENTEN

    Dear Members and Friends,

You will see in this month’sNachrichtenblatt that we arenow only producing thePresident’s report in English. Itwas not an easy decision to makebut it is becoming increasingly

difficult with everyone’s hectic schedules and theextra cost involved to produce a second Germancopy of the report and the extra pages add to thecost of mailing. I would like to thank GerhardGriebenow for the 12 years that he did the transla-tions for Alfred Lowrick and the 4 years that he hasbeen doing the same for me. I know there weremany times when I was later then I should havebeen getting my report to him, which really put the

pressure on him to get the translation done by thedeadline. Thank you, Gerhard, for all the hard workthat you put in for this over the years. It was greatlyappreciated.

Well the weather is certainly changing, and it’s timeto start thinking about getting your snow tires puton the car.

On Friday October 26th we held our volunteerappreciation party for everyone who generouslyvolunteered hours for prepping and working theweek of Oktoberfest. I believe we had approximate-ly 80 of our over 100 volunteers attend and I thinkeveryone had a good time. We all sat down and atetogether, chatted with old and new friends, enjoyedsome chicken, cabbage rolls, pigtails, salads, munchies, apple strudel with ice-cream and had afew drinks. It was a fun and relaxing party. As I saidthat evening, as far as I am concerned, our volun-teers are heroes and deserve to be recognized. Wecould not have an Oktoberfest without all of you.

Thank you to the Alpine Club for their assistancewith our party organizing.

On Saturday November 3rd Erika and I attendedthe Saxonia Hall in Aylmer for the annual Lands -mannschaft meeting and elections. I would like tocongratulate John Penteker, Rosemary Horeth andHannelore Maiterth and were re-elected to theirpositions for another 2 year term and thank JohnWerner and his committee for all they do to pro-mote our culture and give our cultural groups theopportunity to participate in the wonderful pro-grams available to us through the Landsmannschaft.I’m sure John Werner will give us more details inhis report. After the meeting, we attended Trachten -ball in the Saxonia Hall. There were approximately140 people there and we all enjoyed a delicious buf-fet of schnitzel, cabbage rolls and palukus to startoff the evening. Our Choir, under the direction ofDieter Conrad and accompanist Andre Von Wehyeperformed a number of harmonious melodies forus. We were entertained by a number of young

dancers from the Saxonia Hall who have brightfutures as dance group members. The “more expe-rienced” Saxonia Club Dance group also performedfor us, as did our own dance group later in theevening. When we weren’t watching dance groupsor listening to the choir, we were tapping our toesor dancing to the music of Seven Castles. The Ladies Auxiliary Christmas Dinner is December5th at 6:30 p.m. Please contact Else in the office at519-744-1191 and let her know if you plan toattend so they know how much food to order. Iwould like to thank Krista and Rick Hesch andHeidimarie Hesch for taking on the challenge ofteaching our Kindergruppe and making sure we donot lose this very important part of our club life.Belonging to the TCK family is something eachchild should experience and enjoy. The tree of lifehas many branches but the tree cannot grow with-out strong roots and those roots can only staystrong when you know where you came from, yourfamily history and the culture and traditions thathave been instilled in your family for centuries.Make sure your children have strong roots to grow! Please send your children so that they make newfriends with whom they will progress on throughBallroom and Dance Group with. Like many of uswho have made life-time friendships that started atthe club, your children should have that opportuni-ty too.

I very pleased that we will have a Ballroom Grad -uation Class come spring. It looks like we will have10 couples in the class this year and welcome par-ticipants from other German clubs and friends ofour members. We are fortunate to have Hailey Richand Liam Schatz offer to instruct our young peopleagain. Their helpers will be Amanda Mooser, JustinSchatz and Mikaila Emrich. Plan to be at Mit glie -der abend on May 4th to cheer these young peopleon as they show us what they have learned. The weather is getting colder and winter is aroundthe corner; that means so is Christmas, my favouritetime of year. All our groups are practicing for theirChristmas performances and our Weihnachtsfeier. Our annual Weihnachtsfeier will take place onDecember 16, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at the AlpineClub. Please bring the whole family to this very fes-tive afternoon of cultural entertainment, Christmastraditions, and many surprises and of course thevery delicious homemade cookies and coffee andwe can’t forget our special visitor, Santa Claus. Liebe Landsleute und Freunde,

The annual meeting of the Landsmannschaft inCanada was held on November 3rd at the GermanCanadian Club, Saxonia Hall in Aylmer. Reports onthe activities relating to the events of the past yearwere presented. The Kulturaustausch with theJugendtanzgruppe from Siebenbürgen and theHeimattag in Cleveland, Ohio were the focal pointsof the year. New friendships were made, old friend-ships were rekindled, all making memories that willlast a lifetime.

The following Officers were elected for a two yearterm:

    1st Vice Chairman John Penteker

    Media Representative Hannelore Maiterth

    Ladies Representative Rosemary Horeth

I would like to thank the above Officers for accept-ing their position. Thank you to our club PresidentsReinhard Schmidt (Transylvania Club), JohnHoreth (Saxonia Club) and Frank Klein (WindsorSaxon Club) as well as all club members for theirsupport of the Landsmannschaft.

2019 will again be an exciting year for ourTransylvania Saxons. The Federation Jugendlagerwill take place in July in Austria with youth fromGermany, Romania, Canada and the USA invited toattend. The Jugendlager, which was started in 1971,is recognized as an important event to facilitate themeeting and discussion between Saxon Youth fromthe five Federation Saxon Countries. Canada is enti-tled to send (5) five youth and (1) one chaperone.Program details will be available in January. Youthinterested in participating in the Jugendlager in theUSA are asked to contact Kolina Tavares (226-808-0317), Rebecca Horeth (519-550-2486) or JohnWerner (519-884-7725).

The book “Transylvania Saxons in Canada” writtenby Dr. Waldemar Scholtes can make a niceChristmas gift. Copies can be obtained by contact-ing John Werner (519-884-7725).

At this time of the year when we joyfully look for-ward to the Christmas Season we are reminded ofthe plight of our fellow Saxons still living inSiebenbürgen. The living conditions that they face, cold weather and sometimes lack of nutritious foodis especially difficult for the elderly and even forsome younger people that need social assistanceand help with medical problems. Romania is notCanada! At the Heimattag 2018 in Dinkelsbühl,Rebecca Horeth on behalf of the Landsmannschaftand our Saxon Community in Canada presented adonation of $2,400 each to the Austrian andGerman representatives for Social Assistance toSaxons living in Siebenbürgen. Letters thanking usfor these donations have been received. I ask every-one to help us continue this work with your dona-tion. Donations (cheques) can be sent to the“Alliance of Transylvania Saxons” 149 White PineCres. Waterloo, Ontario N2V 1B3.
