App Workflow

COLLECTOR APP WORKFLOW

The Collector App uses line segments to record trash condition on roads. Line segments can be of any condition – Low, Moderate, High, Very High – and can be drawn manually or drawn through live streaming of your location. Points can also be added for spot assessments of trash condition.

Note: Layer visibility can be toggled on/off using the layers icon, but layers must be visible in order to add features. Contact 2N for assistance in adding reference layers (ex. Priority Areas, MS4 Boundary, etc.)

STEP 1: COLLECT A NEW FEATURE In the Trash RAM Map in Collector, click the + sign to collect a new feature. Add the new feature based on Trash Condition (See Condition Key) and appropriate feature type.

• Add a POINT for a discrete area of trash, spot assessment, or parcel-specific assessment.

• Add a LINE if travelling along a sidewalk, road or other continuous area.

Note: Condition can be changed before the feature is submitted. Feature type (point vs. line) cannot be changed. To change type, delete and collect a new feature.

STEP 2: COMPLETE ASSESSMENT

POINT ASSESSMENTS Fill out the following fields to complete the point assessment. Fields in red are required.

• Condition o Confirm condition assessment (See Condition Key). Change condition if needed.

• Field Personnel o Add field personnel info. (Recommended if multiple field personnel are involved in trash

assessments.) • Notes

o Add any relevant notes. (Include any immobile bulk trash items, overflowing refuse, illegal dumping, etc.)

o If an area is inaccessible (blocked off, under construction, unsafe, etc.), assess based on what you are able to see, and add “Inaccessible” to the notes.

• Date* o ArcGIS Online account information and Date/Time will be automatically pulled from the

device to time stamp each collected feature. o If you are adding a feature from a previous assessment day, use the “Manual Date” field to

enter the correct date of the assessment.

• Add Photos o Add multiple photo attachments by clicking on the camera icon on the top banner. When

taking photos, hold your device at shoulder height at a 45° angle and stand approx. 10 feet away from the trash (or as far as needed to capture the assessment area).

• Type o Assessment Type defaults to “Road.” If you are making a parcel-specific assessment,

change type to “Parcel.”

LINE ASSESSMENTS • Live Streaming:

o Once the feature has been created and condition has been determined, toggle back to the Map screen and click “Stream” or “Start Streaming” (depending on mobile device). Your current location will be pulled at 1sec intervals. Streaming can be paused or stopped at any time, using the controls in the app (see Collector App Interface).

• Drawing Manually:

o Click the map to place the initial vertex of the line segment, or use your current location by clicking the bullseye icon. Add as many vertices as necessary to represent your entire path of assessment.

• Drawing + Streaming: o Start by manually drawing the segment, then click “Start Streaming” to connect the line

from your last drawn vertex to your current location. This is helpful if you have already walked/driven past part of the segment, but want to stream the segment as you continue forward. Streaming can also be paused, and the remainder of the segment can be manually drawn.

• Walk/drive along your assessment area until the Trash Condition changes (either improves or degrades). Fill out the following fields to complete the line assessment. Fields in red are required.

o Condition Confirm condition assessment (See Condition Key). Change condition if needed.

Note that any change to the condition will affect the entirety of the segment. o Field Personnel

Add field personnel info. (Recommended if multiple field personnel are involved in trash assessments.)

o Notes Add any relevant notes. (Include any immobile bulk trash items, overflowing

refuse, illegal dumping, etc.) If an area is inaccessible (blocked off, under construction, unsafe, etc.), assess

based on what you are able to see, and add “Inaccessible” to the notes. o Date*

ArcGIS Online account information and Date/Time will be automatically pulled from the device to time stamp each collected feature.

If you are adding a feature from a previous assessment day, use the “Manual Date” field to enter the correct date of the assessment.

o Add Photos Add multiple photo attachments by clicking on the camera icon on the top banner.

When taking photos, hold your device at shoulder height at a 45° angle and stand approx. 10 feet away from the trash (or as far as needed to capture the assessment area).

• When the Trash Condition changes, complete/submit the current feature and begin collecting a new feature with the updated condition.

STEP 3: EDIT ASSESSMENT Edits to previously submitted features can be made by clicking on the feature, clicking the settings icon in the pop-up, and selecting “Edit”. Click “Update” when done, and edits will be saved.

• Edit Line Segment o If needed, edit your line segment using the available toolbar (see Helpful Hints box).

Condition can be changed and vertices can be moved or deleted at any time. Edits to previously submitted features can be made by clicking on the feature, clicking the settings icon in the pop-up, and selecting “Edit”. Click “Update” when done, and edits will be saved.

STEP 4: SYNC OFFLINE ASSESSMENT DATA (IF NECESSARY)

• If data was collected offline, be sure to sync data once back online. To sync data, return to the Landing Page by clicking on “Maps” in the upper left hand corner. Click the cloud icon with a red tag to sync collected data. Note: Syncing large amounts of data works best when connected to WIFI.

Helpful Hints:

On smaller mobile devices, the assessment screen and the map screen may not be concurrent. Click the map/data icon to toggle back and forth between screens as needed.

Use the bullseye icon to add a vertex at your current location

Use the X icon to delete the selected vertex

Use the back arrow to undo

Use the trash icon to delete a an entire segment

Survey123 Workflow

Survey123 uses points to record trash condition on roads. Points can be of any condition – Low, Moderate, High, Very High – and are dropped at your current location. If you are ONLY collecting point data, we recommend dropping about 3 points per block. To begin assessment, proceed through streets (on foot or in vehicle). Look for trash on curbs and sidewalks, and once spotted, stop and assess the site. Once trash is identified in the field, open the “TrashRAM_Survey123” survey. If no trash is identified in the field, open the TrashRAM_Survey1123 survey to complete a “Low” trash assessment.

STEP 1: IDENTIFY ASSESSMENT AREA Visualize an area about 1000 square feet.

• Square or circle: about 10 standard parking spaces or a quarter of a basketball court (roughly 50' by 25')

• Along a road: about 5 car lengths, including the parking space, gutter, curb and sidewalk • Linear: along a fence would be about the length of a basketball court (roughly 100')

STEP 2: COMPLETE POINT ASSESSMENT Fill out the following fields to complete the point assessment.

• Add Photos

o Add a photo attachment. When taking photos, hold your device at shoulder height at a 45° angle and stand approx. 10 feet away from the trash (or as far as needed to capture the assessment area). Note: Only one photo can be taken per site using the Survey 123 App.

• Type o Assessment Type defaults to “Road.” If you are making a parcel-specific assessment,

change type to “Parcel.” Other available types include Shoreline, Riparian and Other.

Once the fields have been completed, click the green check mark on the bottom banner to submit. A “Survey Completed” message will pop-up. Click “Send Now” to submit data. Return to the Trash RAM survey to continue point assessments.

CONDITION KEY:

Imagine collecting the trash within the assessment area and lightly compacting it in a 5 gallon bucket. Use the table below to assign a trash condition based on your observations.

Note: Assessment only includes mobile trash – trash that can be transported by wind or water to a storm drain system, or trash that will disintegrate quickly and become mobile. Do not include non-mobile items, but mention their presence in “Notes.”

Observation Category Bucket Description

Low

< 3 pieces • Effectively no trash is in the assessment area. • There may be some small pieces in the area, but they are

not obvious at first glance. • One individual could easily clean up all trash observed in a

very short timeframe. • Only a few pieces of trash would be in the 5g bucket, if any.

Moderate

< ¼ full • Predominantly free of trash except for a few pieces that are easily observed in the assessment area.

• The trash could be collected by one or two individuals in a short period of time.

• Bucket no more than 1/4 full.

High

>¼ full – FULL • Trash is widely/evenly distributed and/or small accumulations are visible on the street, sidewalks, or inlets.

• It would take a more organized effort to remove all trash from the area.

• Bucket between ¼ full and completely full.

Very High

> FULL • Trash is continually seen throughout the assessment area,

with large piles and a strong impression of lack of concern for litter in the area.

• There is often significant litter along gutters. • It would take a large number of people during an organized

effort to remove all trash from the area. • Trash volume > 5 gallons.

Additional Helpful Hints

SAVE BATTERY & CELLULAR DATA WITH OFFLINE MAPS

Collector Maps can be easily configured for offline use. See “Collector App Workflow” for guidance on downloading the base map before going out in the field. Once out of the office, collect data with or without service, and sync all data once you return to the office or WIFI. Offline maps also allow for use of airplane mode to save battery, and allow for use of devices without data plans.

COLLECTOR APP TIPS & TRICKS

Spatial Precision - To increase location precision when manually drawing points and/or vertices, click the desired point and hold down. The map will zoom in on the point and show crosshairs, allowing the user to place the point in the exact location desired.

Speeding Up Line Data Collection - Line data can be collected by streaming, manual drawing, or a combination of the two.

• Streaming - click “Create a Feature” and click “Start Streaming” to continuously stream your current location.

• Manual Drawing - click “Create a Feature” and draw in each vertex to form your line. • Draw and stream – start drawing the segment manually and then click “Start Streaming” to connect

the line from your last drawn vertex to your current location. This is helpful if you have already walked/driven past part of the segment, but want to stream the segment as you continue forward.

Troubleshooting

If you are having trouble with older versions, or want to collect data outside your previously downloaded offline basemap, return to the landing page, click the settings icon, and click “Manage.” Click “remove” on the TrashRAM map and choose to remove both features and basemaps. Return to the landing page to see the most recent version, to use maps online, or to download a new basemap.
