Take care not to wastethis valuable resource, and save money whileyou’re at it, too!
Make every dropcount - REDUCE• Hot water for showers, laundry and
washing dishes is about 20 per centof a typical energy utility bill
• Run dishwasher and washing machineonly when full; use energy-saver cycle
Don’t be adrip - RETROFIT• An average family of four flushes
400 litres of water a day• Replace older toilets with new,
efficient ultra-low flush models thatuse only three- to-six litres of waterper flush – reducing water use by50 to 85 per cent per flush
• Adapt or replace older, less efficient appliances
Because youcare - REPAIR• Regularly check toilets, pipes and faucets
for leaks and repair them immediately• Leaks can cost anywhere from a few
dollars for a dripping tap to as muchas $1,000 per month for a faulty toilet
• The average family loses approximately14 per cent of water usage through leaks, most commonly in toilets
• Check toilet for leaks by putting a fewdrops of food colouring into the tank andwait 20 minutes before flushing. If colourbegins to appear in the bowl, the flappervalve may need replacing. Other issues toconsider include: adjusting the chainlength and float arm and checking theball-cock for leaking
Think green, real green -LAWN CARE• Choose a sprinkler that lays down water
in a flat pattern. Oscillating sprinklers loseas much as 50 per cent of the water theydisperse through evaporation
• Water lawn in the early morningor in the evening to prevent evaporation.
• Water lawn once a week for no morethan one hour
• Cut grass relatively high(6 cm or 2.5 inches)
be water wise
