Westport House is a small sober living community founded with the mission to provide young adult and teen males with the professional services, experienced staff, high-quality facilities, and safe community that support their successful transition back into high school, college, career, and life.

Change happens when you feel safe, inspired, and confident to make your life your own. It’s our responsibility to create this environment while empowering our clients through open and honest dialogue, clear expectations, and defined resources.

Westport House is an extended care sober living community for young men who need more support than school or home can provide

Life at Westport House

Our small size — combined with a unique mix of life skill development, academics and employment, clinical best practices, adventure, and family involvement — envelops our clients in a structure that helps make the process of personal growth feel more concrete and clear.

We’re an experienced team; we’ve literally worked with hundreds, if not thousands, of young men in early recovery. Our experience tells us that neither we nor anyone can elicit true change in a young man, whether by coercion or enticement. We understand that change in behavior alone is not the goal, as behavior can be manipulated and is often not truly internalized. What we do believe is that our clients need consistency, predictability, and positive role models to feel safe and confidently navigate their new environment and way of living.

“Recovery is about relationships. By building positive connections with others, we’re happier and more fulfilled. This is core to our beliefs, and we’re constantly bonding through shared adventures, challenges, and routines of daily life.” Al Samaras Founder/Director, Westport House

Westport House delivers all clinical treatment services from our nearby dually licensed outpatient center. Keeping residential life and clinical services apart is preferred, since it provides a separate, safe environment for working through underlying issues

Individual TherapyClients meet weekly with a masters-level therapist specializing in substance use and co-occurring disorders — ensuring core issues are identified and properly addressed.

Medication ManagementOur triple board-certified psychiatrist, Michel Mennesson, is an expert in the treatment of addiction and co-occurring disorders and the conservative use of medications.

Psychological and Neuropsychological TestingA standard psychological assessment diagnoses psychiatric conditions. Neuropsychology integrates genetic, developmental, and environmental history with testing data to better understand brain functioning.

Intensive Outpatient (IOP)Our program provides individual, group, and family therapy. Clients attend groups three days per week for eight to twelve weeks, where they practice coping skills, participate in sober activities, and develop recovery action plans.

Holistic TreatmentsEffective addiction treatment should address the entire individual. Holistic treatment services at our outpatient center include yoga, meditation, acupuncture, and therapeutic massage.

Family EducationFamily education helps families understand the nature of addiction, develop healthy ways to manage anxiety, learn how to grow together, and pursue personal healing.

Social Relationships in RecoveryWe teach the skills that our clients need to be able to socialize like “normal young people.”

VivitrolWe recommend Vivitrol when indicated for those with an opioid addiction — always in tandem with comprehensive therapy.

DBT Skills TrainingWe help clients practice skills aimed at mastering their emotions, managing their interactions with others, and accepting a certain amount of discomfort in their lives.

Drug Testing and MonitoringWe provide random drug testing to our clients in both our sober living and outpatient settings.

We’re passionate about the benefits of physical fitness and recreation: essential components of a recovery-focused lifestyle

We incorporate a variety of physical fitness and recreational activities into our program. In addition to the mental health benefits, the bonds that form through these shared experiences are often strong and long-lasting. The relationships that we develop with others in recovery can support us for a lifetime.

It’s also about having fun! Getting sober is a second chance at life, and many young men lose sight of who they are throughout their addiction. At Westport House, they'll explore many opportunities in sobriety and find out what they are truly passionate about. Whether they enjoy art, sports, music, physical fitness, or social activities, they’ll find that there are healthy ways of experiencing fun without drugs and alcohol.

Activities include:• Dual gym memberships:

Westport YMCA and Edge Fitness Center

• Adventure recovery• Paintball• Westport beaches• Kayaking and paddle boarding• Deep sea fishing• Skiing and snowboarding• Tennis• Golfing/driving range• Rock climbing• Hiking• Sailing instruction• Meditation classes• Intramural sports: basketball,

Westport’s vibrant atmosphere and supportive recovery community offer grounding for young men — away from the triggers of home or larger city life

Located 48 miles north of New York City, Westport, Connecticut, is situated between the towns of Norwalk and Fairfield along Long Island Sound.

The downtown area offers everything from one-of-a-kind shops to national retailers. Restaurants and eateries abound; a thriving arts and cultural community offers art exhibitions, performances, a library, churches and synagogues, and museums.

The surrounding area offers many recreational activities. The Longshore Complex include a golf course, three swimming pools, tennis courts, the Longshore Sailing School, kayaking, a picnic area, and a boating marina. During the winter, the tennis courts transform into a skating rink. Compo Beach and Marina offers a skate park, beach-side softball and basketball, picnic areas, and acres of sandy beach.

Most importantly, Westport supports a significant recovery community, with nearly fifty 12-step meetings each week in Westport alone. Men’s meetings are numerous and represent every walk of life, from CEOs to college students. Our clients have little difficulty finding a 12-step meeting niche and sponsors to whom they can relate.

For the families of Westport House sober living clients, some words of wisdom

When a young man completes a drug addiction treatment program, it’s only natural to wish everything could get ‘back to normal’ as quickly as possible. But addiction recovery is a lifelong process. It involves learning skills of sober living, as practiced in the real world. It means recognizing that we never go back to normal — we go forward to possibility.

In the end, it’s your family member who determines how successful this stage of his recovery will be. We know that our sober living environments work — and give back as much as or more than clients put into them. Please allow yourself to hope that the young man you love will find his way to health and independence. We share that hope, and we join you in cheering him on.

The Westport House Family ProgramOur Family Program is a workshop series designed specifically for Westport House families. It’s held regularly at our outpatient care and training center in downtown Westport. Authored and facilitated by noted addiction and family systems expert, Gregory Koufacos, MA, LCADC, NCRC, this series promotes the well-being of those who care about a young adult with an addiction. Through education and guidance, participants learn that they can’t control their loved one’s addiction, but they can find new, healthy ways of coping.
