    GATEWAY OF INDIA

Mumbais most recognised monimment, the Gateway of India,

was constucted to commemorate the visit of King George Vand Queen

Mary to the city. It was completed in 1924 and remains as a striking

symbol of the British Raj era. After this eraendad in 1947, the last of

the British troops departed through the Gateway of India. The looming

gateway is designed to be the first thing that visitors see when

approaching Mumbai by boat. Its also a popular place to start

exploring Mumbai. These days the atmosphere around the monument

resembles a circus at times, with numerous vendors peddling

everything from balloons to Indian tea.

Its the place where the viceroys and governor used to land upon their

arrival in India. Though the built as awelcome to King George V for hisvisit of 1911, then an event of grand significance for British India and

the British empire, today serves as a monumental momento of

colonialisation and subjugation by the British over the people of India.

Built right next to the Taj Mahal Palace & Tower hotel, for the

Britishers to arriving for the first time to India, the gateway was a

symbol of the power and majesty of the British empire.

'Hare Krishna Land' that covers an area of over 4 acres. This temple was

established by Swami Prabhupada in 1978 and is one of the forty ISKCON

temples in India. Fabulously constructed, this temple is embellished with various

paintings and statues within its interiors, making the temple look all the more

mesmerizing. This gorgeous temple was constructed to honour Srila

Parabhupada's aim to spread 'Krishna' consciousness. The temple is an apt spotfor meditation and prayers especially for people who seek to increase one's

spiritual knowledge and add on to their intellectual development. This temple is

life. Chowpatty Beach is also a wonderful beach and is wuite nearby the temple

    complex.

    History

The land on which the ISKCON temple is situated was initially a jungle. On

Swami Parabhupadas, desired to build a temple there, this land was offered to

the International Society for Krishna Consciousness in 1971, and on 14th January

    1978, the temple was inaugurated.

guesthouse for devotes to stopover. The temple is built in such a way that it

overlooks the skyline of Juhu in Mumbai.

    THE BRIDGE

In 1988, when V.S. Naipaul arrived in Bombay, now known as

Mumbai, and drove south from its airport, he could tell something unusual was

happening because the traffic was so bad. It turned out that a festival of Dalits, the

former untouchables, had led to crowds that blocked the roads. The Nobel-

prizewinning writer complained of fumes and heat and din in his taxi to the Taj

Hotel. The chaos was novel enough to form the opening passage of his book, AMillion Mutinies Now.

Today greater Mumbais population has almostdoubled to 18m, and

transport bedlam has become as integral to its psyche as the stock market, films

and slums. Millions endure commutes that would qualify them for post-traumatic-

stress counselling in rich countries. Rush-hour trains get so crushed that a phone

or pair of glasses carried in a breast pocket will smash under the pressure of

bodies. Every year perhaps 500 people perish after falling off trains in the city and6,000 die on the tracks. If, like Mr Naipaul, you can afford a taxi, it will reek of

sweat and honk and buck for inches of advantage against bigger cars, which under

a Darwinian highway code have bullying rights. After monsoon storms the sewers

overflow and the roads flood. On nights like this endless lines of vehicles crawl in

the darkand you can hear the slop lapping on your cars underbelly, like waves

    on a dinghys hull.

    The elephanta caves

This place resonates with the spiritual energy of India. The Elephanta Caves are a

great tourist attraction in the vicinity of the large Mumbai metropolis. The

Elephanta Island is located 10 km away from the Gateway of India at Mumbai.

The cave complex is a collection of shrines, courtyards, inner cells, grand halls

and porticos arranged in the splendid symmetry of Indian rock-cut architecture,

and filled with exquisite stone sculptures of Hindu Gods and Goddesses. It is

situated on Gharapuri Island in Mumbai's harbour, about an hour's boat ride

from the Gateway Of India. At the entrance to the caves is the famous Trimurti,

the celebrated trinity of Elephanta : there's Lord Brahma the Creator, Lord

Vishnu, the preserver and Lord Shiva the Destroyer Unfortunately, many of the

sculptures inside have been damaged by iconoclastic Portuguese rulers who took

potshots at Hindu Gods with their rifles. And yet somehow, nothing has

disturbed the sublime beauty of this place for centuries.
