    Diwali :

    Dussehra :

    Elephant Festival :

    Ganesh Chaturthi :

    Holi :

This is one of the major festivals in the Hindu calendar. It occurs inOctober/November, and is spread over four days. Dhanteras (Dhanatrayodashi) isthe first day or rather the eve of the day on which the festival begins.Narkachaturdashi which is also known as Kalichoudas or Bali Pratipada is the secondday. Laxmi Pujan and New year (Padava) normally occur (depending on the Hinducalendar) simultaneously on the third day and Bhaiya-duj is the last day.

The word Dussehra comes from the word 'Dus' meaning 'Ten' and 'Hara',meaning 'annihilated'. So Dussehra is the day in which the 10 facets of Evil weredestroyed. On Dussehra Sri Ram killed the great demon Ravana, who had abducted

Sri Ram's wife Sita to his kingdom of Lanka. Sri Ram was a great believer in thepowers of Goddesss Durga, and He prayed to Her for nine days before He Himselfentered the battlefield on the 10th day .

It is an inimitable event held annually in Jaipur. Groomedflawlessly, rows of elephants do a catwalk before an enthralled audience liked bestfashion models to make this festival an amazing one. The elephants move with poisein pageant, run races, play the regal game of polo, and finally participate in thespring festival of Holi. It is festival time with elephants typically celebrated one daybefore the Holi, Indian festival of colours.

During the Ganeshchaturthi festival, clay idols of Ganesha arespecially prepared and most families in Maharashtra install an idol for periodsvarying from two days to eleven days. During the period when the idol of Ganesha isinstalled in a home, every morning and evening prayers (Aarti) are performed andhymns are sung. The singing of hymns is a popular event during this festival, especially for children. The hymns are sung to the clanging of small gongs (calledjhanja), the sounds of which reverberate throughout the day.

The festival of Holi, a spring harvesting festival is celebrated over two daysafter the full moon in early March every year. On the evening of the first day bonfires

are lit in public places and the next day people celebrate with festive vibrancies andwild abandon as they throw coloured powder and water at each other. The secondday is called Dhuleti or Rangapanchami (Ranga-colour, Panchami=fifth day), fromthe time when the festival was celebrated over five days. Harvested grains andcoconut were offered as oblation to the fire in rejoicing at the fertility of the land.
