THE Orient Express TravelGroup’s (OETG) Select Travel Groupagency brand, has recordeddouble digit revenue as well aspassenger, product and airlineand destination growth over thelast 12 months. “Business has never beenstronger,” ceo Tom Manwaringtold TD at the 11th annual SelectTravel Group conference inBangkok on the weekend. “Costs have remained thesame, rewards are high, marginshave improved” and there’s moreproduct on offer including TheTravel Corporation who joinedearlier this year. Manwaring said key factorsmaking the Select Group workinclude its transparency, focusand tight business, building onthe brand, expanding customerrelationships and making surethe members are the “localexperts with a global reach”. The Asia-focused Australianindependently owned travelagency membership group hadaround 100 delegates and 40suppliers in attendance at theconference, joining 14 OETG staff

for networking and to be furthereducated on how to make theirbusinesses more profitable. “It’s a great opportunity foreveryone to get together todetail their challenges and whattheir needs are in order to helpthem with their business,”Manwaring said. “We want to make sure thateveryone is profitable in whatthey are doing - that way theGroup will be more profitable”. WA gets extra funds THE West Australian govt hashanded out an additional $1.2mto support tourism initiatives overthe next two years, destined foraviation and marketing projectsto boost tourism to the state. The extra funds prop up analready allocated $5.2m kitty forWA, dedicated to the rapidlygrowing Chinese market. WA Tourism Minister Kim Hamessaid the new funding builds onsuccess in 2011 which saw a57.5% spike in visitors from China. “It is crucial we continue tomarket WA internationally as thehigh Australian dollar and lowairfares out of Australia mean thetourism industry needs Govtassistance to prosper,” he said. In 2011, China Southern Airlinesadded Perth to its network, whileQatar Airways will introduce non-stop flights to the WA capital in Jul. Etihad Airways is also believedto be mulling Perth services.

Carnival seeks director CARNIVAL Australia is on thesearch for a Commercial Director- Australia for the Princess Cruisedivision following the recentappointment of the incumbentStan Birge to the new role of vpNorth America for Cunard Line.

JETSTAR Australia/NZ ceo DavidHall says the airline will operatethree 787 Dreamliners by the endof next year, with the first tocome “mid to late 2013,”confirming a Jetstar Asia tweetlast week which said it wouldreceive the 787 in Aug (TD Fri). TD was among a select groupwho experienced the Dreamlineron Sat, with a flight from Sydneyto Brisbane which showcased theadvanced features of the plane. In a pre-flight media conference

Qantas ceo Alan Joyce said the787 was a step-change for thecarrier, providing savings throughlower fuel burn and lessmaintenance, as well as asuperior customer experience. The plane is very quiet, whilethe interiors in the test aircraftincluded massive overhead bins,advanced lighting controls andinnovative electrically-dimmablewindows which can also becontrolled by the cabin crew. The first 15 QF Group 787s willbe delivered to Jetstar, with 11replacing its current A330 fleet toexisting destinations and the 12thonward providing “new networkopportunities,” Hall said. Asked about the use of the 787sfor Qantas mainline operations,Joyce said that from 2014/15 thegroup will take delivery of thefirst of the larger 787-9s, “andwe’ll decide at that stage whatwe’ll do with them”. Regional resilience THE Tourism ForecastingCommittee is tipping regionaltourism operators will prosperfrom an unexpected spike indomestic visitors for the FY. The newly released RegionalForecasts 2012 indicated domesticvisitor nights are likely to grow by1.5% to 168 million in 2011/12,“an upward revision to previousforecasts of a 0.2% fall,” theFederal government revealed. Queensland, Victoria andTasmania are expected to see thegreatest gains - 6%, 4.3% & 2.8%respectively - in domestic visits. The swing “is testament to theresilience of Australia’s tourismsector in the face of a high Aussiedollar and the natural disasters oflast year,” Tourism Minister MartinFerguson said on Sat. The TFC suggested internationaltourist nights are also expected torise by 1.8% to 40 million nights. Domestic and int’l nights arelikely to grow 0.6% and 3.1% in2012/13 the TFC predicts.

Bangkok a blast for Select Travel Group ORIENT Express Travel Group’s Select Travel Group concluded its 11th annual Conference in Bangkok overthe weekend, returning to the Thai capital after having to change the destination at the last minute in 2010. The Tourism Authority of Thailand hosted a fabulous first night dinner in conjunction with the Thai historicalshow Siam Niramit - with delegates enjoying the event after battling local traffic heading to a Lady Gaga concert! The final night included an awards dinner hosted by Sabre Pacific, where Select agents were awarded fortheir efforts throughout the past year with some agencies winning Diamond and Gold awards. And there were lots of other winners too, with up to $35,000 in prizes on offer from suppliers who tookpart in the highly successful Select Product Market which debuted this year. Many lucky winners walked awaywith iPad 3’s, digital photo frames, economy class airfares, holidays, a cruise and lots more. The dinner saw attendees boogie the night away to the cool sounds of the nine piece Zao Za Dung band.Other sponsors of the weekend included lunch host QBE and United Airlines who put on morning tea.
