1 Sabarmati Ashram

Sabarmati Ashram Ahmedabad sprawls on the western bankof River Sabarmati. At just 5 km from the citycentre, tourists flock to witness the aura ofthe place that served as a base for MahatmaGandhi’s political activities and saw himtrooping out on the famous Dandi March in1930. It became a beacon of hope for thesupporters of non-violent movement inIndia’s struggle for freedom.

Mahatma Gandhi foundedSabarmati Ashram Ahmedabad in the year1915 and it still houses the evidences of hisrelentless struggle. Don’t forget to take acloser look at the handicrafts, handmadepaper and spinning wheels that aremanufactured in the ashram. It also has ondisplay, some rare pictures of MahatmaGandhi, and the letter that he wrote to Hitleron July 23, 1939! Take a walk down memorylane as you explore the art galleries, alibrary and a book store, all within theprecincts of the ashram.

2 Sun Temple Modhera

Near Mehsana, Modhera,Ahmedabad,Gujarat 384212, India

Dedicated to the Sun God, theSun Temple Modhera is a relic of the Solanki Dynasty. It was builtin the 1026 CE by Raja Bhimdeva I. It isfamous for its magnificent architecture,which is still awe-inspiring after so manycenturies. It is thought to be one of the bestconstructed devotional places in westernIndia. Though, it no longer serves anyreligious purpose, it attracts a huge numberof tourists. Presently it is under thesupervision of the Archaeology Survey ofIndia. The entrance atSun Temple Modhera has carved archeswhich leads to the grounds that houses 108shrines, a breathtaking sanctum andbeautiful carvings on the walls. The templeis built such that the first rays of the sun fallon the Sun God during the equinoxes. Thenritya mandap (dancing hall) and the SabhaMandap are beautifully carved, with 12niches showcasing the different aspects ofthe Sun God during each month. Specialmention needs to be made of thesymmetrical stepped-tank, the Surya Kund,which is the finest example of geometry.The carved stone steps are interspersedwith 108 miniature idols.Sun Temple Modhera can broadly bedivided into three sections--the garbhagriha with an ambulatoryand an octagonal gudhamandapa, a sabhamandapa with a torana in front and a large

tank which is decorated with severalminiature shrines. The gudhamandapacontains embellished images of twelveadityas and the sabhamandapa has a grandset of pillars which are adorned withtriangular and semicirculararches. The main temple is based onan inverted lotus-base plinth--lotus beingthe flower of the Sun God. The Solankis hadalso built an idol of the Sun God madeentirely of gold. Unfortunately, the templewas attacked by Mahmood Ghazni and all itsriches were looted. Much of the damageshave been restored during reconstruction.
