Howdy Partners! Happy Texas Independence! There are fantastic festivals going on in Gonzales and at Washington-on-the-Brazos for us to go celebrate this great state of ours. There are some great car shows going on this month as well as more food events than I can count. To work off all the calories, look up jogging, runs and walks in your favorite town. Here’s a special treat for our feature story: Let’s all welcome Casper, our rural Texas reporter, as he shares his traveling experiences with us from the town of San Augustine. Learn the history behind the Mission Nuestra Senora De Los Dolores De Los Ais, some interesting places to get a snack and about a wealth of historic homes and sites. See you on the Trail
Traveling the Side Roads of Texas
by Casper
Historic San Augustine, Texas
San Augustine, Texas, established in 1834, should be one of the first stops for any traveling Texas history buff. San
Augustine [pop 2500], county seat of San Augustine county, is located in the Piney Woods of deep East Texas, 35 miles
east of Nacogdoches and 45 miles northeast of Lufkin.
The friendly people of San Augustine call their town “the Cradle
of Texas”, and with good reason. The Mission Nuestra Senora
De Los Dolores De Los Ais [Our Lady of Sorrows, for the Ais],
known as Mission Dolores, was established near present day
San Augustine by Father Antonio Margil de Jesus in 1717.
Located on the famous El Camino Real, the mission’s dual
purpose was to convert the local Native American residents
[the Ais] and give warning to Spanish authorities of French
invasion from Louisiana. The mission failed to attract many
native residents and was finally abandoned in 1773. The
mission served as the focus point of early Spanish settlement
and later developed into the first Anglo settlement in Texas. Despite the threat of expulsion by Spanish authorities,
Anglo settlers began arriving in the San Augustine area as early as 1802.
Stop at the Visitor’s Center as you come into town to pick up some of the great brochures and maps.
I started my history tour early, as the doors opened at Mission Dolores Visitors Center and Museum. In the visitor’s
center, I was greeted by a friendly volunteer who gave me a quick overview of the complex and offered a number of
brochures about the Mission. Then I crossed over to the museum building, where I was greeted by docent Claudia
Renthrop. An interesting 10 minute video about the Mission is offered before touring the museum. After the video, Mrs.
Rentrop led me through the small museum, which contains maps, displays, and dioramas explaining the history of the
mission and its archeological excavations. Also on display are some of the artifacts found during archeological “digs”
near the center.
A unexpected treat during my tour was the invitation by Dr. George Avery, resident archeologist, to visit his laboratory
in the mission center. Dr. Avery is the Coordinator of the Center for Regional Heritage Research at Stephen F. Austin
University and he and his friendly staff made my visit to the center very special. I then followed the walking trail behind
the center to the historical markers on site and across the road to the city owned and operated RV park. If you are
traveling by RV, the park is a great location for home base while exploring San Augustine County.
About noon, I headed north to the city square. First stop was the
beautifully restored 1927 Classical Revival courthouse, a limestone and
concrete building with bright green window frames and roof. This is the
third courthouse built for San Augustine County. On the front lawn is a
statue of James Pinckney Henderson, early San Augustine lawyer and
resident, and first President of the Republic of Texas.
San Augustine has a number of recommended restaurants. The Pinto
Pony Cookie Factory, located on the northeast corner of the square,
serves breakfast and lunch, as well as having great homemade cookies.
Some of the other dining places suggested by residents were Mary Kay’s Country Diner, Los Jarritos Mexican Restaurant,
and Imogene's Café.
After lunch, I toured the square, visiting local merchants including Red Dirt and Roses Antiques and Bogard’s Emporium,
an antique mall, which contains Ayish Books, a nice selection of Texana and local history books. I finished my tour at the
San Augustine Drug Company, an active pharmacy with a nice gift shop and fun old-time soda fountain.
Next, I headed to the Ezekiel Cullen Home, built in 1839 by famed architect
Augustus Phelps and later home to Judge Ezekial Cullen, associate Justice of the
Supreme Court of the Republic of Texas. The home, occupied by family until the
1950’s, is now a museum owned by the Daughters of the Republic of Texas. It also
houses a large collection of paintings by renowned artist S. Seymour Thomas, a
native of San Augustine.
Located in San Augustine are 25 State Historic Homes, including eight which are listed in the Historic American Buildings
Survey, and five listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These include the Col. Stephen W. Blount Home, built
in 1839. In fact, the town is full of wonderful restored and well-kept homes of many different building styles and
periods. Walking and driving tour guides are available in a brochure, and also from a city website.
While walking around town, I was also impressed by the number of historic churches. These include the Jerusalem
Christian Methodist Episcopalian Church, organized in 1845, as the first African-American church of record in Texas. The
present chapel was built in 1943. Christ Church Episcopalian was founded in 1848 and their present chapel was built in
1870. The First United Methodist Church, organized as McMahan’s Chapel in 1833, built their first church in 1841.

The current building was completed in 1909 and is still in use. The Church of Christ congregation was formally established in 1836, and their present building was built in 1938. Before I headed home the next morning, I visited the historic San Augustine City Cemetery. This well-kept cemetery has a unique atmosphere, and is the resting place of San Augustine residents since the 1830’s, These include Col. Stephen W. Blount, historian Dr. George L. Crocket, and Confederate Army Captain Benjamin F. Benton. The 500+ markers here display a fascinating cross-section of the history of San Augustine. I ended my stay with a visit to the San Augustine Public Library. This large, bright library is staffed with friendly, helpful librarians and contains a large, well-equipped genealogy and local history research center. This is a must stop for anyone with family ties to the area and researchers on local history. In 2002, the Texas State Society of Architects designated San Augustine as one of the twenty-five places termed “Locations where architecture, natural beauty, and cultural heritage combine to create a special corner of the Lone Star State.” Websites – www.sanaugustinetx.com, www.visit.sanaugustinetx.com, www.texasbeyondhistory.net/dolores, www.elcaminorealtx.com
The Poor Boy Tour is Coming to Brenham
Mark your calendar for March 23-24, 2012, and enjoy going back in time to the years 1928 -1931 when Henry Ford mass produced over 5 million Model A automobiles. Model A's and their owners from Victoria, San Antonio and
Houston will join the Piney Wood Model A Ford Club from northern Harris County as it hosts the 44th annual Poor Boy Tour. More than 75 Model A's are expected to enjoy the back roads of Washington County and downtown Brenham. Wave as they go by and you will be treated to the famous AHOOGA horn sound and lots of smiles. Friday, March 23, the group will enjoy a welcome dinner at the Washington County Fairgrounds Event Center. Saturday morning cars will line up at the Event Center and travel to Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site for tours and a catered lunch. They'll return to Brenham to explore the downtown area that afternoon. A final banquet and entertainment at the Fairgrounds Event Center will close the tour. If you want to take pictures of these great cars or speak with their owners, catch them at one of these stops.

Back in 1968 the San Antonio and Houston Model "A" clubs agreed to create an annual tour that would be more economical for the participants. It had become evident that families of both clubs were not attending the larger car tours because of rising costs and the need to take time from work or use vacation days to attend the tour. The idea of a "Poor Boy Tour" was born with some very simple guidelines ... they would be held annually in the early spring between Houston and San Antonio and within 50 miles north or south of highway 90. In 1974, the Victoria Model A Club was formed and became the third host club. In 1987, the Piney Wood Model A Ford Club became part of the group. **Texas Independence Day**
The 176th anniversary of the signing of the Texas Declaration of Independence will be recognized during a free two-day festival March 3-4 at Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site. The festival will be held from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday and provide endless opportunities for family-oriented activities. All admission fees will be waived during the celebration weekend! This celebration brings the Republic of Texas era to life. A special commemorative program Sunday afternoon at the Tom & Jane Bullock Amphitheater will begin at 1:30 p.m. with a performance by the Aggie Wranglers, a high energy country/western dance group. Colonel William B. Travis, portrayed by Bob Heinonen, will address the crowd, and direct descendants of the 59 declaration signers will be recognized during a dramatic roll call by General Sam Houston, portrayed by Jack Edmondson. A Texas-size birthday cake will be served to audience members with the legendary Davy Crockett, portrayed by Jeff Bearden, helping to cut the cake. Children are invited to have their picture made with this Texas hero. The Tanner Family Minstrel group will wind things up with a rousing, family-friendly performance. Throughout the two-day celebration, the 293-acre park along the Brazos River will be transported back to the time when Texas was a sovereign nation. Re-enactors in period clothing and members of the Texas Army, along with skilled craftsmen and talented musicians, will fill the park as Texas commemorates its inception. In addition, food vendors selling a variety of festival foods will be on site. The Star of the Republic Museum will open a new exhibit entitled "A Slice of Life: Washington in the 19th Century," focusing on the people, businesses and events that influenced the fledgling village of Washington during the 1830s. Marriages, divorces, lawsuits, balls, horse races - Washington had it all! Best known for the Convention of 1836 that declared Texas' independence from Mexico, Washington was also a hub for medical practices, land offices, mercantile establishments, hotels and, of course, taverns. A special sneak preview of the Asa Hoxey collection is also planned. This event is made possible through funding from Washington-on-the-Brazos State Park Association, Exxon Mobil Corporation and Bluebonnet Electric Co-op. Directions and schedule of events will be available prior to the event at www.birthplaceoftexas.com and www.starmuseum.org. For detailed information, contact Ginger Moreland at 979-830-1824 or by email at [email protected]. For information about Star of the Republic Museum, contact Anne McGaugh at 936-878-2461 ext. 237.

The “Perfect Place” for Spring Break Rockport-Fulton: clean; close; and un-crowded!
The Rockport Beach was the first Texas beach to be annually certified and designated as a “Blue Wave Beach” by the Clean Beaches Council of Washington, D.C. It has consistently topped that list for years! As a Blue Wave beach destination, Rockport and Fulton represent the complete eco-coastal experience and actively promotes and embraces principles to keep its beaches clean and managed responsibly, as well as focus on the safety of visitors and the protection of the environment. This mile-long sand beach is litter free, handicap accessible with public restroom and shower facilities. Other park amenities include beach front thatch covered umbrellas, children playgrounds, volleyball courts and covered picnic cabanas with grill. "Parents feel safe on our beaches," says Diane Probst, president/CEO of the Rockport-Fulton Chamber of Commerce. "Even if younger children wander out in the water, it's extremely shallow for at least a quarter-mile. The beach is on Aransas Bay so there are gentle waves rather than the crashing ones that come from the Gulf of Mexico." For the more adventurous, there is a ski basin inside the park for jet-skis and other small water-craft equipment. Stand-up paddle boarding (SUP) is fast becoming a local favorite as is kayaking and wind surfing. The Saltwater Lagoon is a great alternative for those looking for deeper water to swim and relax in. The beach is situated on a peninsula one mile long. Both the north and south fishing piers provide good fishing. The boat launches and fish cleaning tables are located conveniently in the center of the beach area. A walking trail is a favorite of locals as they soak up the breezes and salt air to relax. Bird watching in the park is a favorite pastime any time of the year as there are nesting grounds right on the premises. To add to the family fun there are many other amenities around Rockport and Fulton. For low cost local attractions surrounding the beach park, or more information on the Rockport-Fulton area, visit www.rockport-fulton.org or contact the Rockport-Fulton Chamber of Commerce at 1-800-242-0071 [email protected] Directions from San Antonio and Houston If you are traveling from San Antonio take IH-37 south to Corpus Christi, and then take U. S. Highway 181 to Gregory; at Gregory take State Highway 35 into Rockport.
There's a new train in town
View the new sculpture at Riverbend Park on Hwy 71 in Smithville. Thanks to Jeff Snyder, artist, the folks at LPAA and the City of Smithville, our railroad
history has come alive with the modern art near the entrance of
Riverbend Park on Hwy 71. Congrats on such a fabulous job!
From Houston, take U. S. Highway 59 to Victoria, and then, take U. S. Highway south to State Highway 239, and then, south to Tivoli, and at Tivoli, take State Highway 35 into Rockport. The Rockport-Fulton Chamber of Commerce constantly strives to provide the best programs and activities to improve business and build a better community, and is proud to maintain a 5-Star Accreditation from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.
