The European Project C.A.R.E. – Accessible Cities ofEuropean Regions involved 16 European partners, directedby Emilia-Romagna Regional Administration. The aim is tobuild a network of cities all welcoming and accessible foreveryone. Through a special “C.A.R.E.” methodology (seewww.interreg-care.org) 13 partners surveyed the requiredinformation so that the prospective tourists will be able toevaluate whether the facilities can satisfy their needs or not.The resulting itineraries described in the booklets “Travellingin Europe – A guide to welcoming and accessible cities” arenot “accessible” itineraries, but a set of services and facili-ties which can satisfy the need of a guaranteed informationfor tourists with special needs.

Forlì is plenty of resources for tourists,many more than you can imagine. Hidden corners, valuable artistic andhistorical witnesses: it is a town todiscover, since not all its treasures arebrought into prominence as it is thecase in other places, not everything is in the lime-light. Information tools offering different itine-raries according to tourists’ orientations andalso specifically designed ones to satisfy diffe-rent types of tourism, are particularly useful.Therefore, a detailed analysis of the accessibility ofthe most remarkable monuments of the city centre ofForlì has been carried out, paying a special attention tothe accessibility by people with impairments.A lot of work has been done and is still being done inorder to ensure accessibility to all sites of the town, byeliminating, from time to time and especially duringrestoration and regeneration works, the existing barriersdue to the historical structure of the most ancient buil-dings. The accurate surveys made just ahead of this projectrepresent the cornerstone for reaching full accessibilityto the priceless artistic and architectural heritage ofForlì in a short time.

Forlì è una città che può offriremolto al visitatore, forse più diquanto ci si possa aspettare.Ricca di angoli nascosti, di pre-ziose testimonianze artistiche estoriche, è tuttavia una città che
va scoperta, perché non tutti i suoi tesorisono enfatizzati come altrove, non tutto èsotto i riflettori. Di conseguenza si rivelanoparticolarmente utili quegli strumenti infor-
mativi che possono delineare itinerari diffe-renziati a seconda del tipo di ricerca verso la
quale il visitatore è orientato, ma soprattutto versole diverse tipologie di visitatore. In questo caso èstata effettuata un’indagine approfondita sullecaratteristiche di accessibilità di alcuni tra i monu-menti più significativi del centro storico forlivese,con particolare attenzione alle potenzialità di frui-zione da parte dei visitatori diversamente abili.Molto si è fatto, molto si sta ancora facendo pergarantire tale fruizione su tutti i siti forlivesi, supe-rando di volta in volta, soprattutto in occasione dilavori di restauro e ripristino, quelle che sono ledifficoltà poste in essere dalla storicità strutturaledegli edifici più antichi. Gli accurati rilievi condot-ti nell’imminenza di questo progetto costituisconoun’importante base per giungere a tempi brevi aduna fruibilità effettiva di un patrimonio artistico edarchitettonico di raro pregio, come quello forlivese.

FORLÌ: AN ITINERARY THROUGH THEHISTORY OF THE TOWN, FROM
S. DOMENICO MUSEUM COMPLEX TO“FRANCO AGOSTO” CITY PARK.
Forlì is so rich in places, corners and architectural landsca-pes where you can find traces of the history and witnesses ofremarkable artistic value, that it is rightly recognised as anart town.Most monuments are in the city centrewhere you can make the richest and mostexhaustive stroll ever.Start your tour from the oldest districtof the town: the Schiavonia district.Strolling along Corso Garibaldi you’llsee the profile of Chiesa della Trinità,probably the first church to be built inForlì which hosts, among others, avaluable marble work by Canova. Goingon towards the centre, among palacesand alleys dating back to the eighteenth century, you willreach an open space overlooked by the Cathedral. Its ninete-enth century façade opens up to an interior rich in artisticwitnesses, among which a beautiful dome with frescoes byCignani is worth mentioning. From the Cathedral, you cantake Via delle Torri, on the left, and if you turn left into ViaMentana, you will see the oldest cinema in Forlì where origi-nal environments from the beginning of the Twentieth centu-ry are still in place. Following the alley you will arrive at thefoot of a tower which belonged to the Numai family in theMiddle Ages. Opposite the building stands the FerranteFoschi Ornithological Museum, which is hosted in the palacehaving the same name.

La città di Forlì conta molti luoghi, scorci urbanistici, pae-saggi architettonici attraverso i quali è possibile leggere letracce della storia e trovare testimonianze di rilevante inte-
resse artistico, tali da giustificare lasua qualificazione come Città d’arte.La maggiore concentrazione di operemonumentali è individuabile nel cen-tro storico, all’interno del quale èdelimitata l’area più idonea per unpercorso esauriente e articolato.Tale percorso può prendere le mossedal quartiere di Schiavonia, il piùantico della città. Qui, lungo CorsoGaribaldi, si staglia la sagoma dellaChiesa della Trinità, forse la prima
chiesa forlivese che conserva tra le altre cose un pregevo-le marmo del Canova. Proseguendo verso il centro, trapalazzi e vicoli settecenteschi, si giunge allo slargo sulquale si affaccia il Duomo, la cui facciata ottocentescaintroduce ad ambienti ricchi di testimonianze artistiche,non ultima una bellissima cupola affrescata dal Cignani.Sulla sinistra del Duomo si può imboccare via delle Torrie, svoltato per via Mentana, passare di fronte al più anticocinematografo di Forlì, l’Apollo, che conserva ancoraall’interno ambienti originali del primo Novecento.Seguendo la stradina ci si trova ai piedi di una torre che funel medioevo della famiglia Numai. Proprio di fronte,l’ingresso del Museo Ornitologico Ferrante Foschi, ospi-tato dall’omonimo palazzo.
Take a few steps along Corso Mazzini and you will see theChiesa del Carmine, with its magnificent portal which, in thefifteenth century, was placed on the façade of the Cathedral.Carry on for a few hundreds of metersto the South and you will be in PiazzaSaffi, overlooked by the bell tower ofthe San Mercuriale Abbey which hostsvaluable Romanesque and gothic wit-nesses. Going to the East, you will arri-ve at the Chiesa di San Pellegrino, withits fourteenth century portal and magni-ficent medieval works inside. If you thenmove in the opposite direction, you’llfirst pass by the impressive building ofthe Diego Fabbri Theatre, and theOratory of San Sebastiano, a jewel dating back to the fifte-enth century, and then you’ll reach the convent complex ofSan Domenico, where restoration works are going on well: itwill accommodate the art gallery and all the museums of thetown. At a short walk, there is the pedestrian entrance to thebig city park, on one side, while the impressive Fortress ofRavaldino stands on the other side. Outside the city walls, inVia Firenze, there is the house-museum of Villa Saffi datingback to the Risorgimento period.
Qualche passo lungo Corso Mazzini ed ecco la Chiesa delCarmine, col magnifico portale che nel Quattrocento eraposto sulla facciata del Duomo. Di qui, a poche centinaia
di metri verso sud, si entra nella gran-de Piazza Saffi dominata dal campa-nile dell’Abbazia di San Mercuriale,scrigno di testimonianze dei periodiromanico e gotico. Orientandosiverso Est, ci si può dirigere verso lachiesa di San Pellegrino col suo por-tale trecentesco e magnifiche operemedioevali all’interno e poi, prenden-do la direzione opposta, fiancheggia-to il poderoso edificio del TeatroDiego Fabbri e quindi il gioiello quat-
trocentesco dell’Oratorio di San Sebastiano, puntare dirit-ti verso il complesso conventuale di San Domenico, i cuilavori di ristrutturazione sono a buon punto e che ospiteràPinacoteca e Musei cittadini. A due passi: l’ingresso pedo-nale del grande Parco Urbano da un lato, l’imponenteRocca di Ravaldino dall’altro. Fuori porta, lungo la viaFirenze, la casa-museo risorgimentale di Villa Saffi.

La Chiesa della SS.ma Trinità è unadelle più antiche della città. La strut-tura dispone di un parcheggio privatodove possono parcheggiare le perso-ne disabili. Il percorso è di circa 10 min ciotolato e pietra.L’entrata, con porta manuale a bat-tenti, presenta un gradino di 7 cm.
La navata centrale e le varie Cappelle laterali sonofacilmente fruibili, mentre per raggiungere l’altaremaggiore è necessario superare 3 gradini.A sinistra dell’ingresso si può ammirare la cattedravescovile di San Mercuriale e in una Cappella adestra, la testa del Santo.Da segnalare nella prima colonna a sinistra la sculturafuneraria a Domenico Manzoni, eseguita da AntonioCanova.Non sono previste visite guidate ma si può richiedereuna guida cartacea in italiano con le informazioniprincipali riguardo alla Chiesa.

The Duomo (Santa Croce) dates back tothe tenth century and is dedicated to theHoly Cross due to the presence of a relic,currently conserved in the Treasury of theCathedral.The building has no private car park butthere is a public car park with 4 parkingplaces for the disabled. The distance tocover is 50 m with slightly uneven paving.The main entrance, like the secondary entrance on the left,has 2 manual double-leaf doors with a width of 60 cm. The-re are no obstacles.The central nave and the various lateral chapels are easy toreach, while there are 5 steps to access to the main altar.The Cappella della Madonna del Fuoco, dedicated to thepatron saint of the town, has a magnificent fresco of theAssunzione della Vergine (the Assumption of the Holy Vir-gin), the last great work of the European baroque era.From the Cappella del S.S. Sacramento you can reach theTreasury of the Madonna del Fuoco.No guided tours are envisaged but you can ask for a guide-book in Italian with the main information on the church.

The restroomhas a tight fit concertina door of 34 cm.On the top floor you will find the circle (40 seats) with 5steps; often this zone remains closed. All the environmentsare carpeted.

The Ornithological museum is on the groundfloor of Palazzo “Foschi-Numai”. The Palaz-zo, built between the fourteenth and the fifte-enth century, was renovated in the next centu-ry by Pino Numai. The rooms are decoratedwith Numai coats of arms.The entrance, with a manual double-leafdoor, is 62 cm wide and has a 17 cm step.From the entrance you come to a portico withuneven paving. From here, on one side after astep you can gain access to 2 exhibition roomsof the museum. On the other side, again after passing astep, you come to a small library with an audiovisual roomand a toilet (quite small). The environments are spacious.At the bottom of the gallery you can admire an elegant fifte-enth-century courtyard with porticos on three sides. It hasstone columns and Corinthian capitals, with the Numai coatof arms.On request, guided tours are available.
Il Museo Ornitologico si trova al pianoterra del Palazzo “Foschi-Numai”. The building of the Chiesa del Carmine,started in 1735, on the project by Giusep-pe Merenda, was completed in 1783. As awitness of the Ordelaffi family, the faca-de has a portal made of Istria stone whichwas originally commissioned for theCathedral: the portal lunette portrays SanValeriano on horseback and above himthe Patron Saints of the city and the coat of arms of theOrdelaffi family. The single-nave interior dates back to theeighteenth century and the barrel vault portrays the Allego-ry of Virtues; the walnut wood choir-stalls are worth men-tioning and above them there is a copy of the Annunciationby Palmezzano.The building has no private car park, but at about 20 m fromboth the main entrance and the secondary one, there arepaying places and at roughly 50 m, 2 places reserved fordisabled people are available; the distance to cover is onasphalt and porphyry and is not protected.The main entrance has a step plus 4 subsequent ones, whilethe secondary one (Piazza del Carmine) has only one step. The nave is easily accessible, while to get to the Chapels youhave to pass one step and four consecutive ones to reach themain altar and the choir.No guided tours are envisaged, but an information boardpresents the history of the Church in Italian.
La Chiesa del Carmine, iniziata nel1735 su disegno di Giuseppe Meren-da, fu terminata nel 1783. A testimo-nianza degli Ordelaffi, la facciatapresenta un portale in sasso d’Istriaoriginariamente commissionato per ilDuomo: esso presenta una lunettacon San Valeriano a cavallo sovrasta-
to dai Santi protettori della città e dalle insegne degliOrdelaffi. L'interno settecentesco ha impianto a nava-ta unica e il tema della volta a botte è l'allegoria delleVirtù; da segnalare il coro in noce, dove è custoditauna copia dell'Annunciazione del Palmezzano.La struttura non dispone di parcheggio riservato agliutenti ma sia a 20 m dall’entrata principale che dallasecondaria, sono presenti posti auto a pagamento, e a50 m 2 posti auto riservati ai disabili; il percorso è inporfido e asfalto non protetto.L’entrata principale presenta un gradino e successivi4, mentre quella secondaria (Piazza del Carmine) ungradino isolato.La navata è facilmente fruibile mentre per accederealle Cappelle è necessario superare un gradino e perraggiungere l’altare maggiore ed il coro 4 gradiniconsecutivi.Non sono previste visite guidate ma c’è un pannelloinformativo in italiano con la storia della Chiesa.

The Basilica of San Mercuriale, rebuilt bythe Vallombrosani in Romanesque styleafter a devastating fire in 1173, representsthe hub of the old-town centre of Forlì.It is the church-museum of the city andcontains numerous works of art, such asthe “pale”by Palmezzano.The building has no private car park butthere are 2 parking places for the disabled beside theentrance.The main entrance, with a manual door, has 4 steps with 2ramps that have a maximum slope of 10%; the stone floorhas crosswise grooves.The central and lateral naves have slightly uneven paving;there are 8 steps to reach the altar and another 3 to reachthe choir. To reach the “Cappella del SS. Sacramento”youhave to pass a single step, while for the “Cappella Mercuria-li”there are 4 steps and for the “Cappella dei Ferri”, 3.The outer cloister can be reached from the car park with 2ramps with a slope of 10% and of 18%, respectively.There are no guided tours but inside you will find 2 informa-tion columns with earphones which, upon payment, displayimages and playback information on the history of thechurch.

The distance tocover has slightly uneven paving.The entrance, with a manual double-leaf door, has 2 steps.The central and lateral naves have no obstacles, like the“Cappella di San Pellegrino”, where you can find the tombof the saint.To reach the altar you have to pass 3 steps and another toreach the choir.There is one step to the Cloister, and another 2 consecutivesteps. Then you reach the Capitular hall with a 3 cm step.No toilet.The building has 3 mobile ramps made of wood that areused when needed (maximum slope 36%).No guided tours are envisaged but there are guidebooksinside the church in Italian, English and German with themain information on the Basilica.

The San Domenico museum complexhosts the museums of the city of Forlì. Itconsists of a church and a convent withtwo cloisters. No private car park is available, but atabout 30 m, you will find public payingparking places with 3 places reserved forthe disabled. The “F. Agosto”city park stretches alongViale dell’Appennino and is directly con-nected to the San Domenico Museumcomplex through a 800 m cycle and pede-strian path with gently sloping stretches. The two main entrances, on via Montoneand via Pertini, have no obstacles and areprovided with wide car parks with threeplaces reserved for the disabled at 20 m. All paths are pavedwith asphalt and porphyry; they snake regularly and presentsome sloping stretches (slight or steep slope). Within the park you will find playgrounds for kids, a lake,benches to sit and relax in the middle of a green oasis andthe following sports facilities: basketball court, 5-playersoccer field, volleyball court and “bocce” (lawn bowling)court. Next to the sports facilities, there is a restroom forpeople with disabilities, which is spacious and fitted withhandles.Playgrounds for kids are scattered throughout the park;they are all with dirt and gravel. The park is home to wildrabbits, ducks and geese.Inside the park there are the “La collina dei conigli”pub andthe “Peter Pan” restaurant and pizzeria, equipped withrestroom for disabled people. On request, special menus areavailable for people with specific nutritional requirements.

In the Middle Ages the Fortress of Raval-dino was used to defend the city of Forlìuntil, in 1500, Cesare Borgia managed topenetrate it and capture the then gover-nor Caterina Sforza.Nowadays it is possible to visit the for-tress’ outside garden, inside courtyardand exhibition rooms. You can reach themfrom one of the two garden entrances, either from Via delleBande Nere or Via della Rocca; the entrance from Via dellaRocca is accessible to disabled for parking inside the gar-den. The garden has an uneven dirt and gravel path. The accessto the exhibition rooms and the courtyard is through the for-mer drawbridge with two double-leaf doors and one step;the grass courtyard is in front of you, while on the left a75cm wide corridor with step leads you to the exhibitionrooms. The exhibition spreads over 2 floors connected by a stonespiral staircase (24 steps). The ground floor hosts 2 rooms,while the first floor consists of three rooms connected by 4steps. All staircases have irregular stone paving and arejointed through very small passages with a width of 64 cm.The rooms accommodate temporary exhibitions, amongwhich the crib exhibition is worth mentioning. In summer, concerts are held in the courtyard.

Villa Saffi was originally a Jesuit conventuntil it became the summer residence ofCount Tommaso Saffi, the grandfather ofAurelio (one of the founding-fathers ofthe Republican movement).The Villa has no private car park.The entrance, with two 55cm wide dou-ble-leaf doors, has 2x3 cm steps and thedistance to cover to reach it is roughly 20 metres on gravel.The building has 2 floors connected by 2 flights of stairs (20steps) with a handrail on the left.On the ground floor there are 6 halls, all easy to reach withthe exception of the kitchen which has a 5 cm step; the onlychairs are in the “Ping-Pong”room. The restroom is on thisfloor. The entrance is 69 cm wide and it is a tight fit.On the first floor there are 7 small halls, connected by isola-ted steps. Room n. 105 has been declared accessible.
