The Uses of être

Ø To tell where someone is from:

• Je suis de Pittsburgh. • I am from Pittsburgh.

• Tu es en classe. • You are in class. • L’ordinateur est sur la table. • The computer is on the table.

Ø To describe someone’s personality, nationality, or profession:

La Négation •  To make a statement negative, use the expression: subject + ne + verb + pas + rest of the sentence (ne becomes n’ before a verb starting with a

vowel.)

Some Examples: •  Je ne suis pas de Pittsburgh. •  Tu n’es pas en classe. •  Il n’est pas à l’école. • Nous ne sommes pas américains. •  Vous n’ êtes pas amis. •  Elles ne sont pas élèves.

agree with the nouns they describe in two ways:

1.  gender (masculine or feminine) 2.  number (singular or plural)

letters to the end of the masculine singular form of the adjective. For many adjectives:

for masculine plural, add –s for feminine singular, add –e for feminine plural, add –es
