Treasure Hunt St. Patrick's Day is coming
And you might think it's a joke.
But I'd like to get my hands on
One of the little folk.
For they say in good old Ireland
If a Leprechaun you hold.
You'll go to the end of the rainbow
To his treasure pot of gold.
It may be a lot of blarney
For tis written in Irish folklore.
The Isle is home to the fairies
To be sure, to be sure, to be sure.

Management:
Welcome to Autumn and hopefully a reprieve from all of the hot weather we
have been experiencing recently.
The Management Team would like to extend a warm welcome to Chantelle
Butler, our new Clinical Manager. Chantelle comes to us with significant
experience in the Aged Care sector. This is a new position which has been
created to support our care teams, and ensure our clinical practice standards and
plans are in place. This role will encompass all three residential facilities and
Chantelle will work with the Home Managers and staff to maintain and improve
the standard of care we provide.
On the 9th of February the Food Service for Abernethy Nursing Home was
audited by Food Aware Australia. Congratulations to all of the hard working
staff on receiving an A Rating for the food service. We will shortly be
undergoing an expansion and renovation of the kitchen/catering facilities at
Abernethy.
Also in the pipeline, is the construction and development of a sensory garden
for the secure unit in Jacaranda Grove Hostel. This will provide many
meaningful activities for our care recipients in this area.
By popular demand, Julie and Graeme’s traveling art show will be gracing the
walls of Mountain View Lodge Hostel for the month of March. We hope you
enjoy the display as much as the residents of Abernethy and Jacaranda.
Bible Quote:
But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to
get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be children of
the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked.

Abernethy Home News the Month
Love was in the air this Valentine’s Day when Max surprised Fay with a
beautiful red rose. Max and Faye have been married for 39 wonderful years.
Residents enjoyed a lovely Valentines concert with Ellis singing many beautiful
love songs. As a special guest Tom Erwin came along to entertain us with his
talent of playing the Concertina. Tom was also quite the comedian having many
of residents laughing and sing along. The morning was enjoyed by all that
attended. As a special treat Tom will be back on the 8th of March to once again
entertain us all.
Due to residents requests Pamper day will now be held 2 times a month. The
1st Wednesday of the month, as per normal and the 3rd Wednesday of the month
in the afternoon.

MVLH News for the Month:
Welcome to Aileen Sellens, Dearne Smith and Doug Williams, we hope you are settling in
well.
On Tuesday the 14th of February we had the ‘Lowes’ Pop Up Shop come to MVLH. It was a

We will have another shopping morning in July when Lowes winter stock is available for
both men and women.
On Friday the 3rd of March we will be going to Nelson Bay Bowling Club for lunch. The
Club has $10 lunches and beautiful views of Nelson Bay. Please see Eleanor if you wish to
come along.
We will be having a St Patricks Day concert and morning tea on Friday the 17th of March.
Please wear your best green clothes/hat/scarf/shoes /tie and come and have a fun morning
with green food, drinks and lots of Irish music.
The ‘Wellness Clinic’ will continue to run on Wednesday afternoon at 2pm in the lounge
room. The Clinic is being conducted by Gouri (physio), Terry (RN) and Eleanor (AO). Come
along and join us for a massage, pain management, heat therapy, cappuccinos, milkshakes or
spiders.
Cessnock City Seniors Festival 2017 begins on Friday the 3rd of March. I have a program of
what’s on around Cessnock and Kurri Kurri during the festival. I am currently trying to
organise to attend some of the events as a group, but I encourage you to attend any of the
events that interest you with family or friends.
MVLH, Jacaranda and Abernethy residents attended a fundraiser for Leukaemia and all blood
cancers at the Weston Workers Club on Monday the 27th of February. This is a very worthy
cause and I encourage all residents and staff to support future fundraising efforts for the
Mater and Newcastle Haematology Wards.

Jacaranda Grove News for the month
We had our first local shopping trip downtown to the Coles Shopping Centre
where a small group of residents had some time to browse the shops and
mingle with the public then enjoy morning tea at the local coffee shop. It was
good to see the residents thoroughly enjoy this experience and the people
they knew in the centre was extraordinary. We have decided to continue this
every second Friday so the residents can enjoy doing their own thing. A big
thankyou to Laurelle Reynolds for being our Volunteer and making this
happen.
Our Singleton Day out bus trip was one of our biggest days yet. A scenic drive
through Singleton brought back many memories for the residents. A lovely
lunch was enjoyed at the Singleton Shopping Centre then shopping was in
order. It is nice to see those residents who bought new clothes that day
wearing them now and looking radiant.

St Patrick's Day in Australia St Patrick’s Day is an annual observance that is popular in Australia on March
17. This event serves as a tribute to Ireland and one of its patron saints, St Patrick.
The legend of the leprechaun and its gold is one of the many Irish folktales shared
on St Patrick's Day in Australia. Many people also wear green on the day.
Many Australians come together on St Patrick’s Day to celebrate Irish culture and
remember St Patrick’s life and achievements. Some businesses and organizations
hold St Patrick’s Day breakfasts and lunches where lucky door prizes are given
and Irish food and drinks are served. Many pubs, particularly Irish pubs, hold St
Patrick’s Day parties in the evenings, where local bands play Irish music and
green drinks are served.
St Patrick Day parades are held in cities such as Sydney and Brisbane. These
parades feature people clad in traditional Irish costumes or dressed in green, as
well and floats displaying the Irish flag. Some people dress as leprechauns while
others wear green wigs. Many Irish associations and historical societies hold
events that give people the chance to learn about the history of Irish immigration
and settlement in Australia.
Public Life
St Patrick’s Day is not a public holiday in Australia but it is a popular event so
many restaurants and pubs, particularly those with an Irish theme, are busy on the
day. Parking and traffic may be temporarily affected by St Patrick’s Day parades,
particularly along the main streets in some cities and towns.
Background
Many Australians remember the Irish settlement and culture on St Patrick’s Day.
The Irish were among the first Europeans to settle in Australia. They comprised
a portion of the convict settlement population in the late 1700s. More than
300,000 other Irish settlers (not convicts) migrated to Australia between 1840 and
1914. Many Irish immigrants came to Australia to escape famine in their
homeland. About 30 percent of Australians are believed to have some Irish
ancestry today.
One way of preserving Irish traditions and customs in Australia is celebrating St
Patrick’s Day each year. St Patrick is one of Ireland’s patron saints. He died on
March 17 in or around the year 493. He worked as a missionary in Ireland and it
is believed that he banished “snakes” from the country although the term may
have referred to druids or pagan worshippers.
Symbols
Many people wear the color green on St Patrick’s Day. They may also wear a
symbol of Ireland, such as a brooch in the shape of a shamrock or a harp. Images
of leprechauns or a pot of gold are seen in promotional material for St Patrick’s
Day. The Irish flag and balloons in flag’s colors (green, white and orange) are
also visible during events and activities on the day.

Falling Leaves
Little leaves fall softly down
Red and yellow, orange and brown
Whirling, twirling round and round
Falling softly to the ground
Little leaves fall softly down
To make a carpet on the ground.
Then, swish, the wind comes whistling by
And sends them dancing to the sky.

please report to DON Rob Sherman or the Registered Nurse in each unit

A very sad poet was Jenny Her limericks weren't worth a penny
In technique they were sound, Yet somehow she found
Whenever she tried to write any She always wrote one line too many
There was once a hippo named Tate
Who sadly was underweight Though he had malts and shakes
Pies, tarts, and rich cakes He seemed to lose weight as he ate!
A girl from the Isle of Wight
Used to travel much faster than light She set out one day,
In a relative way And returned on the previous night
There once was a poet named Blix whose limericks went to line six.
He never did know How far they should go,
And never did bother to fix
If you catch a chinchilla in Chile And cut off its beard, willy-nilly
You can honestly say That you have just made
A Chilean chinchilla's chin chilly
A flea and a fly in a flue Were imprisoned, so what can they do?
"Let's flee said the fly" "Let's fly said the flee"
And they flew through a flaw in the flue
