Your Bounty Hunter Land Star is de-signed to be effective in all areas oftreasure hunting. Coin-shooting, relichunting, and gold nugget shooting aresome of the many ways your detectorcan be utilized.

Metal Detecting can be a lifelong pur-suit available to all ages. The hobbyis completely dependent on the typeof equipment being used and theoperator’s expertise. With the elec-tronically advanced Land Star metaldetector and diligent practice you willachieve a level of expertise makingthe hobby of metal detecting very re-warding. The first step towards thisgoal is to carefully read this manualbefore attempting to operate your newLand Star metal detector.

The Land Star’s features include:

Dual LCD Display — displays theprobable type of metal being detectedand the probable coin depth.

Slow Sweep Discrimination — dis-tinguishes between different metalsefficiently, even when the detector isswung at slow speeds.

Three-Tone Audio Discrimination— sounds distinctive tones for differ-ent categories of metal objects tomake target identification easier.

Four Modes of Operation —1. ALL METAL: detects all types of metal without discrimination.2. DISC: lets you detect valuable metal objects while rejecting most junk targets.

3. NOTCH: allows for tuning in nick-els, gold rings and silver/coppercoins while eliminating most pull-tabs. Can also be adjusted to other

settings.4. AUTO NOTCH: automatically re-

jects most junk targets while retain-ing nickels and small gold items.

OPTIONALACCESSORY

The best coil to use depends on whereand what you will be targeting whenyou are in the field. If you are lookingfor deeply-buried objects, a medium-sized coil, such as the standard 8-inchcoil that came with your detector, ismore efficient. If you're looking for tinyobjects and coin-sized objects that arenot buried too deeply, or using yourdetector for gold prospecting, a 4-Inchcoil might work better.

The Bounty Hunter 4-Inch Gold Nug-get Coil is highly sensitive and offerssuperior performance when huntingfor small objects (such as gold nug-gets or small pieces of jewelry), or inmineralized or highly trashed areas.

Because of its smaller size, the 4-InchCoil has a narrower detection field andis less susceptible to interference fromtrash items. This makes it better ableto isolate precious metals in trashyareas.

INTRODUCTION

19

Your Land Star Metal Detector is an example of superior design and craftsman-ship. The following suggestions will help you care for your metal detector soyou can enjoy it for years.

The coil is waterproof and may be submerged in either fresh or saltwater. Becareful to prevent water from entering the chassis. After using the coil in salt-water, rinse it with fresh water to prevent corrosion of the metal parts.

Modifying or tampering with the detector’s internal components can cause amalfunction and will invalidate your detector’s warranty.

Handle the metal detector gently and carefully. Dropping itcan damage circuit boards and cases and can cause the metaldetector to work improperly.

Use and store the metal detector only in normal temperatureenvironments. Temperature extremes can shorten the life ofelectronic devices and distort or melt plastic parts.

Wipe the metal detector with a damp cloth occasionally tokeep it looking new. Do not use harsh chemicals, cleaningsolvents, or strong detergents to clean the metal detector.

TROUBLESHOOTING

The following troubleshooting stepsmay assist you in case you’re havingproblems with your Land Star.

YOUR DETECTOR IS EMITTINGFALSE SIGNALS WHEN YOU’RE INTHE FIELD.

Your SENSITIVITY may be set toohigh. Try cutting back the SENSITIV-ITY slightly until the false signalingdisappears. Remember, to swing yourcoil slowly. Some false signals will oc-cur on highly rusted metals, but if thesignal does not repeat over the samearea while passing the coil over it, thenthe target is usually not worthwhile.

YOUR LCD READOUT IS NOTLOCKING IN OR ID’ING WHILEPASSING OVER A TARGET &THERE IS MORE THAN ONE TONEBEING EMITTED BY THE DETEC-TOR OVER THE SAME TARGET.

This will usually occur when there ismore than one object over the area

you’re sweeping. If it is an odd pieceof metal that the detector cannot rec-ognize, the meter will also not lock in.Sometimes, oxidation can also makethe meter ID arrows and tones jumparound. This may also occur if theSENSITIVITY is set too high.

YOUR DETECTOR IS NOT STABLEAND HAS A PULSING, DISTORTEDTONE INSTEAD OF A CLEARTONE.

This can occur if you’re operating nearanother detector or near power linesthat can interfere with the frequencythat the detector operates on.

YOUR DETECTOR IS EMITTING ACONSTANT LOUD TONE OR CON-STANT REPEATING TONES

This usually occurs when the batter-ies are low. Try replacing your batter-ies with two new alkalines to deter-mine if this is the cause.

ASSEMBLY

Assembling your Land Star MetalDetector is easy and requires no spe-cial tools. Just follow these steps:

1. Using the supplied bolt andknurled knob, attach the search-coil to the lower stem. Attach thecontrol panel to the upper stemwith the two knurled knobs sup-plied.

2. Press the button on the upper endof the lower stem and slide thelower stem into the upper stem.

Adjust the stem to a length that letsyou maintain a comfortable uprightposture, with your arm relaxed at yourside and the searchcoil level to theground and about 1/2 to 2 inchesabove the ground.

3. Wind the searchcoil cable aroundthe stem. Leave enough slack inthe cable to let you adjust the coilwhen you are hunting on unevenground. Then tighten the knob atthe end of the searchcoil.

Note: To adjust the coil, simply loosenthe knob.

4. Insert the coil’s plug into thematching connector on the con-trol housing. Be sure the holesand pins line up correctly.

Cautions:

• Do not force the plug or you mightdamage it.

• To disconnect the cable, pull out theplug. Do not pull on the cable.

After selecting your choice of modefor operation, swing the searchcoilgently side-to-side, slightly overlap-ping each sweep as you move for-ward. Make sure you keep yoursearchcoil approximately 1" aboveground as you search. Raising it in thesweep or at the ends of your sweepwill cause false readings. Move slowly, hurrying will only cause you to misstargets.

electrical interference, or by large ir-regular trash objects. These signalsare easily recognized by their oftenbroken or non-repeatable nature.

The Land Star is a very sensitive anddeep-seeking detector. It will loudlyrespond to many targets that other de-tectors would only emit a weak signalfor. Because of this, trash-induced sig-nals and other sources of interferencemay emit signals that seem confus-ing. The main key to handling thesetypes of false signaling is to dig onlythose targets that emit a strong re-peatable signal. As you sweep thesearchcoil back and forth over theground, learn to recognize the differ-ence between the signals that occurat random and signals that are stableand repeatable.

When searching very trashy ground,it is best to scan small areas with slow, short overlapping sweeps. To preventerratic signals and difficult pinpointingin trashy areas, consider purchasingthe Bounty Hunter 4-Inch Gold Nug-get Coil System.

Most good objects will re-spond with a good repeat-able signal. If a signaldoes not repeat afterswinging the coil di-rectly over the sus-pected target a fewtimes, it is more thanlikely trash metal.False signals canbe caused bytrashy ground,

INSTALLING THE BATTERIES

Release Clip ofBattery Door

Notes:• The low battery indicator, along with

all other arrow indicators, lightsbriefly when you turn on power, soyou know the detector is workingproperly and the batteries are good.

• If the low battery indicator stays oncontinuously, replace the batteries.

• Many metal detector problems arecaused by weak, dead, or improp-erly connected batteries. If the de-tector does not come on, has weakvolume, will not tune properly, haserratic operation, or drifts, replacethe batteries.

• You can extend battery life by us-ing headphones. A headphone jackis provided and can be used withany 1/4-inch stereo-type headset.

• Remove the batteries if you do notplan to use the detector for a weekor more.

The detector might “lock up” andsound a continuous tone if you havelow battery voltage or are testing thedetector with the searchcoil near alarge metal object.

• Check and replace the batteries ifnecessary.

• Move to a different testing location.

• Reset the detector by turning it offand on repetitively.

IMPORTANT: Your Land Star metaldetector requires two 9-volt ALKA-LINE batteries.

Follow these steps to install the bat-teries.

1. Carefully remove battery compart-ment door by pressing releaseclip at right side of door.

2. Snap one battery onto each of theterminals, and place the batteriesinside the compartment.

3. Replace the compartment door bycarefully inserting opposite side ofclip first. Then press carefullydown on clip side until batterydoor snaps in place.

Caution: Only use fresh batteries ofthe required size and type.

When pinpointing a target, try drawing an “X”,as illustrated, over where the tone is

being emitted.

IN THE FIELD TECHNIQUES

Accurate pinpointing takes practiceand is best accomplished by “X-ing”the suspected target area.

1. Once a buried target is indicatedby a good tone response continuesweeping the coil over the target in anarrowing side-to-side pattern.2. Take visual note of the place onthe ground where the “beep” happensas the coil is slowly moved side-to-side.3. Stop the coil directly over this spoton the ground.4. Now move the coil straight forwardand straight back towards you acouple of times.5. Again make visual note of the spoton the ground at which the “beep” oc-curs.6. If needed “X” the target at differ-ent angles to “zero in” on the exactspot on the ground at which the“beep” happens.

PINPOINTING COIL MOVEMENT

When swinging the coil, be careful tokeep it level with the ground about oneto two inches from the surface. Neverswing the coil as if it was a pendulum.

RIGHT

The coil should be swung in a half-circlemovement as illustrated above. Repeat this

motion every step you take to guarantee thatthe area is being covered thoroughly.

USING HEADPHONES

Using headphones (not supplied) withyour metal detector makes it easierto identify subtle changes in thethreshold levels for better detectionresults, and also reduces drain on thebatteries.

The Land Star Metal Detector has astereo headphone jack.

To connect headphones, insert theheadphones’ 1/4-inch plug into theheadphone jack on the front panel.

Listening Safely

To protect your hearing, follow theseguidelines when you use head-phones. Purchase stereo head-phones that have right and left volumecontrols.

• Set the volume to the lowest settingbefore you begin listening. After youbegin listening, adjust each volumecontrol to a comfortable level.

• Do not listen at extremely high vol-ume levels. Extended high-volume lis-tening can lead to permanent hear-ing loss.

• Once you set the volume controls,do not increase it. Over time, your earsadapt to the volume level, so a vol-ume level that does not cause discom-fort might still damage your hearing.

Do not wear headphones while oper-ating your detector in traffic areas. This can create a traffic hazard and isillegal in some areas.

Even though some headphones aredesigned to let you hear some out-side sounds when listening at normalvolume levels, they still present a traf-fic hazard.

GROUND BALANCING

When searching in the ALL METALmode, it is important that the detectorbe ground balanced to offset the ef-fects of any minerals present in thesoil or to balance the effects of saltwa-ter when you search near the ocean.

1. Begin with the GROUND BALANCE knob adjusted to Preset and lift the search coil about waist high in the air.

2. Push the GROUND TRAC TOUCHPAD and release. To allow the unit to stabilize, push the touchpad 2 or 3 times when first going into the ALL METAL mode.

3. Lower the searchcoil to about one inch above the ground. If a tone is not being emitted, then the Preset position is the proper ground balance for that area. If a tone is being emitted by the detector, proceed by lifting the searchcoil waist high in the air again.

4. Turn the GROUND BALANCEknob counterclockwise slightly, about an eighth of a turn. Pushthe GROUND TRAC touchpadonce again and release.

Lower the searchcoil as de-scribed in Step 3. If the detectorstill emits a tone, repeat thisprocedure. When the detectorno longer emits a tone uponlowering the searchcoil to theground, then it is properlyground balanced for that area.

NOTE: always be careful that there isno metal on top of or under theground where you will be groundbalancing, otherwise you will notbe able to determine if the tonebeing emitted is caused by miner-alization or metal. If you think youmight be over metal, move to an-other spot and proceed.

IMPORTANT: When adjusting theGROUND BALANCE knob counter-clockwise, be careful to turn it in smallincrements—This will assure that youachieve an optimum threshold level. Ifyou feel you've turned the knob too farcounterclockwise, you can turn it clock-wise using the same ground balanc-ing procedure until a tone is beingemitted and then cut it back counter-clockwise slightly until a tone is nolonger being emitted.

Saltwater Balance: To balance theeffects of saltwater use the same gen-eral procedures as used for groundbalancing. The difference is that theGROUND BALANCE control will re-quire a higher setting to balance outsaltwater effects.

Anytime the GROUND BALANCEcontrol is moved, the GROUND TRACtouchpad must be pushed afterwards.

BASIC OPERATION

TURNING ON YOURDETECTOR

Hold the detector in a comfortableposition and turn it on by rotating thecombination POWER/SENSITIVITYclockwise about 3/4’s of a turn. Thedetector sounds three beeps, LCDarrows momentarily appear and unitpresets to the ALL METAL mode ofoperation. When first turning the uniton, the GROUND TRAC touchpadmust be pressed in order to bring upthe sensitivity for good detection. Ifnot, check that the batteries are prop-erly connected and make sure theyare not low.

Your Land Star has four modes ofoperation: ALL METAL, DISC,NOTCH and AUTO NOTCH.

1. ALL METAL: Press the ALLMETAL touchpad after first turningthe unit on. The unit will then respondto all types of metal without any dis-crimination. GROUND BALANCEadjustment will be necessary (seeGROUND BALANCING on p.15).The detector will not require motionto detect a target in the ALL METALmode.2. DISC: By pressing the DISC touch-pad, the detector will now requiremotion to make a detection and tar-

By turn-ing the DISC/NOTCH control clock-wise the detector will first eliminatesmall iron objects, then medium ironobjects. Turned higher, larger ironobjects are eliminated followed byitems such as foil and aluminum whilestill detecting silver and copper—de-pending on how high it is set. Mostgold and nickels will also be eliminatedwhen tuning the DISC/NOTCH con-trol clockwise for higher discrimina-tion. When the DISC/NOTCH controlis placed fully counterclockwise (Low),the detector will pick up all metals in-cluding iron, nickels, and gold ringsalong with pull-tabs and copper/silvercoins.3. NOTCH: By pressing the NOTCHtouchpad, the detector will automati-cally reject iron and can then be finetuned by the DISC/NOTCH control forselective elimination of various junkitems while still detecting nickels, small gold and silver/copper coins.4. AUTO NOTCH: This mode will au-tomatically reject iron and most pull-tabs yet retain detection of nickels andmost small gold rings. The DISC/NOTCH control will increase the widthof the NOTCH as it is turned towardsHIGH, making possible the rejectionof screw caps and zinc pennies, yetstill detecting nickels and many goldrings.Note: Some gold rings will not be de-tected in AUTO NOTCH mode of op-eration. A small percentage of pull-tabs will still be detected, especiallypull-tabs that are broken in half in theshape of a “beaver tail”.

It is often desirable to eliminate somepull-tabs without rejecting nickels, since many types of gold rings arealso rejected along with the nickel.

In the NOTCH mode, the DISC/NOTCH control now functions as avariable notch rejection window. Thenotch can then be adjusted to reject,or “notch out”, selected types of pull-tabs or other trash.

When using the NOTCH feature, mostiron and small foil will be automaticallyrejected.

To set the NOTCH, use a pull-tab ofthe type to be rejected.

Adjust the DISC/NOTCH control to apoint at which the tab, or other desiredobject is “notched” out, or rejected.

The purpose of the AUTO NOTCH isto provide a preset notch window forautomatic discrimination of most trashitems without the loss of nickels andmost small gold objects. In this mode, the detector emits a low tone (for mostsmall gold and nickels) and a hightone for copper, silver, and brass.

The DISC/NOTCH control now wid-ens the discrimination window; for in-stance, zinc pennies and screw capscan also be eliminated by turning thecontrol clockwise—yet, nickels andsmall gold will be retained. In theAUTO NOTCH mode, the discrimina-tion window can be made wider butthe beginning position cannot bechanged. Expect some targets to bejunk items, even if the detector emitsa tone. Besides nickels, other itemsthat might emit a low tone include foil, some pull-tabs, and small gold rings.Besides copper and silver, other itemsthat might emit a high tone includebrass and other metals.

To determine how high to adjust theSENSITIVITY, turn the SENSITIVITYclockwise while listening for false sig-nals; if the unit starts to chatter, emit-ting false signals, reduce the SENSI-TIVITY slightly until the chatter stops.

For maximum depth of detection, al-ways set SENSITIVITY as high aspossible.

ADJUSTING DISC/NOTCH CONTROLKNOB

Only applies when unit is not operat-ing in the ALL METAL mode. TheDISC/NOTCH control knob adjusts fordifferent levels of discrimination.

When operating in the DISC mode, the level of discrimination is increasedby turning the control clockwise fromthe LOW position. NOTE: Some Golditems will also be eliminated as thecontrol is turned clockwise.

When operating in the NOTCH mode, the DISC/NOTCH control establishesa reject window. Items falling withinthis window will not be detected.

In the NOTCH mode, the width of therejection window is fixed.

The DISC/NOTCH control will movethe window to different object settings, but the window width remains fixed.

THREE-TONEAUDIO TARGETIDENTIFICATION (ATI)

When the Land Star is in the DISC orNOTCH modes, its Audio Target Iden-tification (ATI) system automaticallyclassifies metal objects into three cat-egories, to make it easier to identifythe type of target being detected.

The detector sounds three differenttones to distinguish between catego-ries of detected items: a low tone forsmall gold and nickel; a medium tonefor most old and new pull-tabs, somegold and zinc pennies (dated post1982); and a high tone for silver, brass, and copper including pennies(dated pre 1982).

IRON & STEEL: In the DISC mode, most iron and steel objects will emit alow tone. On occasion, if the iron ishighly oxidized, a high tone may beemitted. For instance, some rustedbottle caps will emit a high tone andindicate on the LCD readout in theSILVER range. In the NOTCH andAUTO NOTCH modes, iron and steelobjects usually will not be detected, except for oxidized and rusted itemsas described above.

GOLD & NICKEL: All nickels andsmall gold items will emit a low tone.Larger gold items will emit a mediumtone; the LCD will still read under thegold spectrum. It is recommendedwhen specifically hunting for golditems to dig both medium and lowtones.

OLD & NEW PULL-TABS: These willusually emit a medium tone or no toneat all if in the NOTCH mode. If a pull-tab is broken in half, the “Beaver Tail”part will emit a low tone. There arealso pull-tabs that are bent and foldedor highly oxidized that may emit a lowtone.

COPPER, SILVER & BRASS: Thesemetals usually will all emit a high tonein the DISC, NOTCH or AUTONOTCH modes.

Note: When operating in the ALLMETAL mode, Three-Tone Audio Tar-get Identification shuts down and onlyone constant medium tone is emittedwhen a target is detected.

ATI (Audio Target Identification) falls inthree categories—Some iron and steel

will emit high tones depending onoxidation (level of rust)—Audio responseis not 100% accurate and should only be

considered a reference on average.

For proper air testing, place detector ontable, rotate coil towards the ceiling as

illustrated above. After properly rotating thecoil, remove any watches and rings from yourhands, and make sure no metal in the table

is in close proximity to the coil. Test thedetector by sweeping a metal object across

the coil. If the object is not ID’ing properly, trywaving the object closer to the coil while

making sure the surface of the object is noton edge—for instance, a coin’s surface ismore accurately detected than its edge.

TESTING YOUR DETECTOR

1. While testing the unit for its capa-bility to pick up coins and otherobjects, always test away from othermetals—a good start is outside onthe ground. You cannot test a unitindoors on the floor, because thereis usually metal in the floor that mayconflict with the detector’s signal oreven mask the signal completely.

2. If you’re not picking up coins ormetal, even though your coil is closeto the objects to be detected, thereis a chance that you are not maneu-vering the coil properly. Do notmove the coil too quickly and try notto sweep the coil less than an inchaway from the object.

3. In the DISC, NOTCH or AUTONOTCH modes movement is re-quired before the unit will recognizea target. If you’re air testing, youneed to point the coil to the ceilingand make sure there is no metalnear the coil whatsoever (see illus-tration). The object you’re testingwith needs to be swung in a side toside motion before the detector willbe able to recognize it. In the ALLMETAL mode motion is not requiredto detect a target.

4. Not all gold rings will give you a lowtone. Some gold rings fall in the pull-tab range and may emit a mediumtone similar to the pull-tab. Somepull-tabs, especially if they are bro-ken in half, will give you a low tonesimilar to most gold rings and nick-els.

5. Zinc pennies will emit a mediumtone instead of a high tone as docopper pennies, quarters, anddimes.

6. Do not swing the coil, or the testobject, too quickly or it may give youa false signal. When repetitivelypassing the coil over the object, allow a few seconds to pass to givethe detector a chance to recoverfrom its last reading.
