Lt. Gov. Marketing Report—June 2013 Brian Hatano, DTM, LGM Contact information: [email protected]

his has been a year to savor and remember fondly. Just last month, we enjoyed a wonderful Spring Conference; the Triple Crown Toast-

master Elegance theme brought with it lots of fun and excitement. We had near-capacity attendance and many favorable comments about the event.

Congratulations to LGET George Jarosik, Confer-ence Joey Waldrop and their committees, who were well-organized and as a result, the conference ran smoothly from starting gate to finish line. District Gov-ernor Dianne Bish kept a tight hold of the reins and stayed on schedule despite a lengthy business meet-ing with elections, and adjustied the schedule to ac-commodate requests for keynote speaker Dana LaMon to stay overtime and sign his books.

My highlights of the conference: Dana LaMon, 1992 World Champion of Public Speaking and Ac-credited Speaker, provided a motivational keynote address and an educational session on "Mastering the Ceremonies"; Reid Walley won the International Speech Contest and Gary Pettigrew won Table Topics contest with formidable competition from other division winners; a well-coordinated election process—headed by Dianne and Rick Sydor, District Parliamentarian—of the District Trio and division governors, fantas-tic Friday Casino Night chaired by Joseph Spen-cer; six educational sessions ranging from using social media to conducting great meetings; and meeting old friends, making new acquaintances.

I started the year as your PRO—then was asked to step up to Lt. Governor Marketing in January. I’m hon-ored to be elected Lt. Governor Education and Train-ing for 2013-14. Thank you for placing your trust in me. I will do my best to provide the essential and meaningful training—both officer’s training and enrich-ment classes—and help the committees stage memo-rable conferences in the fall and spring.

It’s sure to be a very auspicious year. The upcoming Fall Conference Nov. 1-2 at the Doubletree Inn Sacra-mento will showcase the year-long theme of District 39’s 60th Anniversary Diamond Jubilee.

I’m looking forward to working with all of you to make

District 39 “excellent” as championed by Dana LaMon.

Brian

We chartered FOUR clubs (so far) this year: Toastmasters @ GSM in Sacramento; Toothmasters Toastmasters, Sacramento; Marysville Toastmasters, and on May 31, Tahoe Toasted Nuts, Incline Village, NV! Great work by Div. B Gov. Dwyane Landenberger and Asst. Div. Gov. Ed. John Davis.

Thanks to Club Extension Chair Louise Houdelette and all who helped at kick-off meetings during the year. Many have worked on getting new clubs started, and because of your efforts, some current prospects will become clubs soon.

City Talkers (Div. A, Area 12, Club 39443)

River Plaza TM (A14, 01465839)

Rosemasters (F61, 01210977)

HGA Talking Heads (F61, 01335185)

Lennane Street Speakers (H82, 01061143)

Suspended Clubs (no dues paid for two periods)

The hopper is full of clubs that are nearing their charter date, thanks to the efforts of many.

On our “hot list” are seven groups that are in the process of forming a club. They have had kick-off meetings and will most likely become part of the District 39 family within a few months, some possibly by the end of this Toastmasters year.

Bank of America, Rancho Cordova

Merrill Lynch/Bank of America, Roseville

Hyatt Regency Hotel, Incline Village, NV

Liberty, Lodi

Board of Equalization, Sacramento

EDD, Rancho Cordova

Community Club, Marysville Several other prospects are getting closer to becoming a

reality. A club lead comes from various sources—an interest-ed individual sends an email, a group of people inquire about starting a club, a company or government agency realizes the benefits of Toastmasters and asks to start a club. If you know of a prospective club, please let me know.

Beat the Clock May 1 – June 30

"Beat the Clock" is a great motivator

for finishing the year on schedule—and with a bang.

Clubs adding five new, dual or rein-stated members during May and June receive a "Beat the Clock" ribbon to display on the club’s banner.

In addition to the ribbon, qualifying clubs earn a special discount code for 10-percent off their next club order. (The discount code expires six months from the date of issue and is not valid with any other offer.)

Applications and payments for mem-bers who join between May 1 and June 30 must be received at World Headquarters or online no later than June 30. Each member's join date as listed on the application must be for May or June. The addition of transfer and charter members does not count toward “Beat the Clock” credit.

The winning clubs will be revealed online within a few weeks of the con-test ending. —from TI

Special thanks to Club Coach Coordinator and Area 85 Gover-nor Bill Inman, who made frequent trips from Carson City to visit clubs and attend meetings in Sacramento. He made more than a dozen coaching assignments that helped clubs work toward Dis-tinguished status. His guidance and leadership is appreciated. Thanks also to those of you who stepped up to serve as a club coach. The clubs benefitted from your leadership!

Bill’s special appearance at the Spring Conference as the bat-tered and race-worn jockey (left) aboard a cardboard version of Chestnut was a highlight of the event. One of many highlights!

With a little bit of help, clubs are revived and thrive

Twenty‐something – not a person, rather a time – the time in days left in the current Toastmasters year.  Let’s make the most of the few remaining days!  Think about your friends whom you wanted to invite to join Toastmasters – there’s still time to do so!  Think about your educational goals which you planned to complete – there’s still time to do so!  As of June 4, we have 5668 paid memberships, 168 clubs, and 27 Distinguished clubs so far.  What will be the final numbers?  The final count for paid memberships and clubs will be the base for the new year – let’s grow BIGGER next year!

Congratulations!!

NOW … think about all your fellow Toastmasters who raced around the track with you this year.  Who helped you achieve your goals?  Who inspired you, encouraged you, and …maybe even gave you a (gentle!) kick in the pants when you needed it?  Who worked with you on a project or an event that was so successful?  … Now, don’t just “think” – “thank!”  Say a few words of appreciation to those who were with you this past year.

MY  APPRECIATION …

Words of appreciation can convey only part of what my heart holds for each and every one of you.  Know that if I haven’t named you in this brief list, I do appreciate all that you’ve done for our beloved District this year and for your leaders and fellow members.

George, you’ve been a “right‐hand man” to so many of us this year.  You are a man of integrity and a man of action, helping so many fellow leaders when some were unable to complete their tasks, yet doing all the tasks assigned to the LGET position besides.  You kept your wits and your sense of humor.  Thank you!

Brian, you’ve stepped in as LGM in mid‐year after having been the PRO for the first part of the year.  In both positions, you completed every single task with an awesome sense of responsibility and good will.  You represent our District in a very professional manner, and will be an excellent LGET!  Thank you!

Sondra, you’ve covered so much ground this year as our District Secretary, and then as our PRO from mid‐year forward.  If I were to list all you’ve done, one whole page just might be enough space to include everything.  You brought your attention to detail to bear in many instances, and your fast response to requests and challenges made the District run smoothly.  Thank you!

Thomas, you’ve also brought an attention to detail to your work as District Treasurer this year and kept the books so well that even outside auditors could find no problems.  Your follow‐through with TI Headquarters staff helped us keep the funds flowing.  Thank you!

Susan, you’ve been our District Secretary just a few short weeks, yet you’ve brought a  thoroughness to the work you’ve done.  I predict you’ll be a great District Secretary this coming year!  Thank you!

Rick, you’ve been an excellent Parliamentarian for the leadership team, and for me in particular.  The myriad questions put to you were always answered thoroughly and in terms we could understand.  You wrote scripts for the District Executive Council Meetings that enabled us to cover all topics and actions smoothly.  I know you’ll continue to be a great Parliamentarian this coming year!  Thank you!

Russ, you’ve been so very helpful this year.  Your knowledge (and memory!) has helped guide me and our leadership team through all sorts of tasks and challenges this year.  Your heart for Toastmasters and your perceptions are truly appreciated by many.  Thank you!

Audrey and Herb, you’ve both been excellent District Governor Advisors to me this year.  You’ve shared successes, given great feedback, and helped with challenges – sharing your thoughts and recommendations when asked, and leaving the decision‐making up to me and the rest of the team.  I could not have asked for more!  You model the proper behavior of Past District Governors so well, that I’m keeping you on as my advisors as I assume that role (smile!).  Thank you!

District Governor Committee Chairmen, thank you for your work on behalf of the District this year:  Russ, Nominating Committee; Gary, Alignment Committee; and Louise, Proxy Committee and Audit Committee.  Thank you!

Division Governors Darlene, Dwayne, Minda, Jamie, Kristi, Philip, Pat, and Myra – each of you brought special skills and experiences to your positions, and all of you worked together to coordinate speech contests and to network together to celebrate successes and solve problems.  You’ve worked well with your Area Governors and with other District leaders – and your presentations at our DECMs were handled with aplomb – well done!  Thank you!

All other District leaders, thank you!  So many of you worked on District events, the website and social media, the TLIs and COTs, and a lot more – lots of successes and good memories for all!  Thank you!

All members of District 39, thank you for having given me the opportunity to be your District Leader this year!  I have enjoyed all the successes and celebrations with you!  Best wishes in the coming year!

ONWARD…INTO THE NEW YEAR IN DISTRICT 39!

DIVISION H—THE HEALTHY HAPPY DIVISION

Division H Report Myra Golson, Division H Governor

June 8, 2013 Division H started the year with 21 clubs, we ended the year with 22 clubs. We picked up 103 new members, to end the year with 219 members. We had two Distinguished clubs, Hi Liners and Fair Weather. Area 81 Governor, Carmela Porcella enjoyed a net increase of one new club, Carmela was a very active Area Governor; Her area visits were done timely, and her clubs benefited from her support. Carmela was elected Divison F Governor for the this upcoming Toastmaster Year. Carmela will be succeeded by Leesa Kitts. Carmela also chaired both Division Contests, and I am extremely appreciative for this. Area 82 Governor Lieutenant Coopwood will be continuing as the Area 82 Governor for the upcoming Toastmaster years. His clubs will benefit from his experience this past year. Area 83 Governor Doug LaVine did a great job with his clubs this year. I think it was his support that made the CSUS club the success it became this year. After serving two years as Area Governor, Doug has decided to enjoy being just a POT this upcoming Toastmaster Year, but before retiring he secured Lance McMahan as his successor. Area 84 Governor Susan Paladini’s club really benefited from her activities this year. Susan was constantly in touch with her clubs, and made many more than the required Area Governor visits. Susan is moving forward this upcoming Toastmaster Year as the Division H Chief Judge. She will be ably succeeded by Candace Hudson of DMV & Raconteurs Toastmaster Clubs. Area 85 Governor Bill Inman was up to his normal standard of Excellence as Area Governor. Bill was elected as Division B Governor for the upcoming Toastmaster Year, We’re still looking for a Governor for this Area, and suggestions and/or volunteers will be very much appreciated. My Team of Area Governors was fantastic, and made my year as Division Governor very enjoyable, and productive. THANKS A MILLION TO ALL OF YOU!!

Division “A”tomic Report

I can’t believe we are nearing the finish line, my last report of the term. What a year! All contests are completed, the Spring conference was successfully hosted, and the new District officers have been elected! Our own Area 11 Governor, Joey Waldrop, has been elected as the new District 39 Governor. WOW! This has been a challenging year with the economic times in the southern portion of the district, but we started a new club in May. Welcome Toothmasters! We are starting to see growth in our clubs, resulting in a promising future. Over all, we had 1 Distinguished area to date, but a little bird told me, just 1 more cc in area 11 and they will be a President’s Distinguished. Way to finish the year Area 11! Thanks to my area Governors, Joey Waldrop, Wes Johnson, Ted Richard and Justin Der. Without these individuals, we would not have had the successes we have had this year. Thanks for all of your hard work team! You have been such a blessing to me.

Division A welcomes the new team headed up by Mr. 100% Gary Pettigrew, and before this DECM meeting, Area 11 Governor Trish Lenkiewicz, Area 12 Bill Doughty, Area 13 Wes Johnson and Area 14 Cynthia Biederman. This team with the existing officers, had already brainstormed and began the process of passing the torch. Having a strong mentoring program is an integral process of success, so each of the new Division A officers have individuals they can count on to be there during their next term. Thanks so much team!

It has been a pleasure to serve as your 2012-2013 Division A Governor. I have made so many new friends and have loved the relationships and self development provided to me this term. I am excited to see how the Areas, Divisions and ultimately the District performs this next year!
