Concept

The performances of the characters will play an important role in our video, the victim playing the underdog role, eventually overcoming his bully in the end, and in turn grabbing his dream girl. The main character will be the victim; the camera techniques and editing will be following his struggles over a normal day of school. The idea is to place the audience as a fly on the wall in the whole situation, siding them with the bully’s victim, making them feel sympathetic towards him. Gradually building up to him overcoming his fears and standing up for himself, winning the audience over. As stated before the performance will be key, the audience needs to believe he is tired of running away from his problems and is ready to stand up for himself. It fits to the genre in a way that the victims are rebelling against the normal bully situation where most would shy away from standing up to them, which is similar to pop punk refusing to adhere to the normal rules.

Style

The overall style of the characters in our music video will be very similar to the actual music video we are trying to take ideas from. The overall colouring of the clothing will be dark to represent the type of music as its not slow and peaceful. We will also try to adhere to the punk genre when thinking of the clothing that will be used within the video, trying to follow the stereotypical pop punk band member such as the ones in the music video as well others we have researched to appeal to the audience who enjoy this genre. As well as the costume and colours used we will need to make sure the performance of each character is convincing enough to be a part of the particular genre, with aspects of rebellion and mischief featured throughout.

Costume

The costumes we will be using for the characters in our music video will be very simple but will make it so that it fits very well with other music videos in the same genre, as the characters have a similar kind of dress sense to the genre it will not be too much of a task finding the right articles of clothing for the characters. Skinny jeans, plain t-shirts, leather jackets, dark clothing will be needed to make it fit the genre style of the video.

After researching other band members for their style and clothing it created ideas for our characters we are going to use. Alex Gaskarth, lead singer of pop punk band All Time Low was a great example to use to find out what type of clothing we could use to show the conventions of costume in the genre. His canvas shoes with tight skinny black jeans are perfect examples of a pop punk band member.

Another example we researched to see what type of costume we could use was lead singer of Green Day Billie Joe Armstrong, his type of costume was perfect for the type we are going to use, the dark clothing with very rare bright colours featured. The skinny jeans and longish hair is also a key feature of a pop punk band member which we will need to try and follow as much as possible when thinking about our video and actually shooting it.

The band Panic! At the disco are also another band that we can take ideas from when it comes to the costume of our characters. As seen from this image of the four together, the main repeated colour is black, which will definitely be featured on our characters. As with the Billie Joe Armstrong example there are a few exceptions to the dark colouring of clothing, with a rare sighting of a bright colour, in this case the colour is bright pink. This could show the difference between this genre and the one which is much more dark and emotional. The bright colour could also be seen as rebellion against the genre of being dark, as the genre itself is all about rebellion and such. The make up used on this particular band could also be a factor we would consider when making our characters look the part for a scene.

Make Up

As stated in the previous photo of band Panic! At the disco, this type of make up could be used on our characters as it is black and features an aspect of gothic nature. It’s very simple but is very noticeable on the character, if we were to sue make up this would be the sort of thing, which would be featured in our music video.

However, having said that I do not think make up will be used in our music video, the colouring of the costume and style will be key and as most pop punk band members recently are very masculine such as A Day To Remember. The use of make up may make the video look unrealistic and therefore will not fit into the genre conventions we had hoped when thinking of ideas for our music video.
