INTENTIONS What is my documentary setting out to achieve?

My documentary is setting out to educate people on the rise in tuition fees. It will make people see why the government voted for the rise and how it will effect students.

What am I:

Challenging – I’m going to try and keep my documentary equal and not bias because I’m going university. My angle will be the differences between the two types of people, who are and aren’t going university. This means that it will appeal to both types of my target audience.

Exploring – I’m going to explore what effects this rise in fees will have on the students. My angle will be what they will need to do to get money to pay it off or if there not going university then what they will be doing instead.

Investigating – I’m going to investigate why the government voted for the rise in fees. My angle will be why Nick Clegg changed his mind.

Proving – I’m going to prove that there was no need to raise the fees. My angle will be showing the difference of people attending university to now and before. As well as what it means for the poorer people.

CONTENT OF IDEA Topic – Rise in tuition fees. I’m going to try and research all angles of the rise in fees.

Angle – I will into many angles such as the effect on students and why they have risen. I will look into how it will effects student regarding money wise and also if they don’t go university what that will mean for the future.

Unique selling point – My unique selling point will be that I will hopefully get interviews with David Cameron and Nick Clegg. Also there hasn’t been a documentary out on the rise of tuition fees. If I cant get Cameron and Clegg for my documentary then my documentary will have a variety of shots and music that my audience will like so it can appeal to them.

Arguments and debates – The arguments that I will be looking in to will be why the government chose for the rise in tuition fees. I will also look in to what effect it will have on the students.

PROFILE OF TARGET AUDIENCE AND APPEAL OF YOUR IDEA Age – My documentary will be targeted to 16-24 year olds. This is the target audience that is in the brief. I will make sure to target this age group by using a variety of shots and music that is appealing to them. Also I will have vox pops with the target audience.

Gender – It will be both genders and will appeal to them because both genders will be wanting to go university or might not be going. I will make sure that it is not biased to males or females by having equal genders in my vox pops.

Location – My documentary will target the United Kingdom as everyone in the UK will be effected. I will record in London because it is well known.

Interests – playing football, going out with friends, playing video games, partying, shopping, fashion, socialising, reading books, listening to music, driving and others. I have chosen this type of person because the variety of people who go to university have most of these interests so I would like to appeal to them. It will appeal to them because I will be informal and formal at the same time so that it reaches out to all types of people.

Ambitions – Going to university, getting lots of money, becoming a teacher, getting a job. Nearly everyone who goes university wants money and to have a good job that is stable. My documentary will appeal to those people because it will show the good side of going university but as well as the bad side.

Employment status/education – Doing last year of sixth form/collage and working part time/full time

Page 6: Treatment

Disposable income – £30-£80. As some people will be in the last year they could be getting EMA or have a part time job. The older lot could have a job so would earn more.

Ethnicity – All ethnicity. It will be all ethnicities because all will be going to university. It will appeal to my audience because I will interview an get vox pops with different ethnicities.

Opinions – Don’t like the government, Think that university will help them get to a better place in life. These opinions are for both the different people that I will target. As I wont be biased to one side, it will mean that I look into both the negatives and positives of the rise.

Existing media consumptions/favourite media text – all BBC channels, channel 4 and 5, Viva, E4, Sky sports and movies. Radio shows my audience would listen to would be Kiss 100 or capital FM. These channels, websites and radio stations appeal to my audience because they have funny but interesting programmes and music that is up to date with the type of style my audience like (Hip-hop, RnB, grime, house) and the websites are social website where they can stay in contact with their friends.

Socio economic group – C1-E. I have chosen to target these type of people because they will be the type who will be effected by the rise in tuition fees.

Niche or mainstream – My documentary will be mainstream. It will be mainstream because it will target many people.

EXPLANATION OF RESEARCH AND KEY FINDINGS

Primary – Focus Group

What did you set out to find?

I set out to find what people thought about my ideas, if they were negative or positive.

Was it examining content or audience? Audience

Why was that method suited to the research you were conducting? It was suited to my research because I found out first hand opinions from my focus group on what they thought. This helped me see their feelings to each topic and if they would like it.

Was it qualitative or quantitative? Qualitative

Was it primary or secondary?

Primary (People said that my topic was recent and that people would like to know more about the rise in fees)

Development of my research It showed me what people thought of my topic.

Secondary – Content analysis

What did you set out to find? I set out to find out more research on the topics I chose so that I knew which one I was going to do.

Was it examining content or audience? Content

Why was that method suited to the research you were conducting? It was suited to my method because it helped me find out more research that I never knew.

Was it qualitative or quantitative? Both

Was it primary or secondary? Secondary (Facts, figures and expert opinions)

Development of my research It gave me more ideas of what to include in my documentary.

Questionnaires

3 key finding

What people wanted to see as a documentary.

  What they where interested in.

How I could appeal to them with my documentary.

The questionnaire was the first research that I done and it gave me a lot of knowledge on what I could actually make my documentary on. As I gave it out to a lot of people I got a lot of responses which I could use to help me pick 3 to do research on. It gave me an idea of what the audience wanted to see and what they are interested in.

Textual analysis

3 key finding

What kind of shots I could include in my documentary.

Who I could have in my documentary to make it interesting.

  What music I could have.

With textual analysis I could actually see what kind of documentaries are out there and see how I could make a better one that would appeal to my audience. It also gave me an idea of the different shots and content that I could include into my documentary.

Focus Group

3 key finding

  Peoples views

  Their reactions

  There opinions

What this meant was that I could get first hand views on what people thought of my ideas. This gave me knowledge of what people would like and would not like to see as a documentary.

Content analysis

3 key finding

  Facts

  Expert opinions

What I could include in my documentary

What I found out from doing content analysis was more information. This meant that I got a better idea of what to include in my documentary. I found out facts such as not all universities will go to £9000 a year.

LEGAL AND REGULATORY CONSIDERATIONS BBC Editorial Guidelines

Children I will make sure that the children I use will be safe and not harmed in anyway. For example, when I interview children for my vox pops, I have to make sure that they are not.

Truth and accuracy I will try and get the truth from interviews and source all of my findings. I will make sure to get all the facts before I say anything. For example, when accusing David Cameron or Nick Clegg I will make sure to know every fact.

Privacy I will respect all privacy and will not break it unless I am allowed. For example, I will not disturb anyone's privacy to get an interview.

Fairness I will be fair and not biased. Contributors and audience will be treated with respect. For example, I will not be one sided when talking about who is to blame for the rise.

Page 12: Treatment

OFCOME Law

Criminality I must not show crime or encourage people in doing a crime. For example, I must not show students how to get a grant if their parents own a lot of money.

Dealing with contributors This should normally be in a sighed form. If someone asks for anonymity I must make seek advice from my programme lawyer. An example is if one of the students I interview wants to be anonymous I have to ask my teacher/programme lawyer.

Page 13: Treatment

Media Law

Defamation Helps protect people or businesses when they come under unjustified attack. For example, if I say something that isn’t correct or out of line about David Cameron then this will protect them.

Contempt of court Stops the media showing anything that isn’t in favour of the people. For example, my documentary wont be shown if it is not liked by the people.

Privacy The law protects confidential information. Broadcasters must comply with the protection act 1998. For example, I cannot break this law by

Copy right It protects the rights to something that isn’t mine. For example, I cant copy other peoples work, or if I use archive footage I have to make sure that I ask them.

Page 14: Treatment

COMMERCIAL VIABILITY Budget

Cost – £5959

I spent this money on equipment, like video cameras, macs, tripods etc. food for the crew, transport and communications.

I wont need all this money when making my documentary. I will only need money for: Trains – going to places (interviews or locations) - £10 Food – For myself for lunch - £10

My documentary would provide good money for value because I will make it look professional with the shots I use and the places that I go to. Also if I get high status people as well.

Distribution and Exhibition

I will make sure my documentary meets all 3 of the BBC’s ethos:

Inform – I will make my documentary inform by telling them how much universities want and also that not all universities want £9000.

Educate – I will educate people on why the government voted for the rise and also that if they don’t go university that they can do apprentiships.

Entertain – I will make my documentary entertaining by having music that is up to date and that it will appeal to my audience. I will also try to joke about student life by showing parties from movies.

Page 15: Treatment

COMMERCIAL VIABILITY P2

My documentary would broadcast on a Monday at 7pm till 8pm. I chose this day and time slot because I felt that there wasn’t a lot of good or interesting programmes that people would watch.

Programmes on at same time The One Show Emerdale The Simpsons Don’t tell the bride News NCIS CSI Miami

THE MARKET http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8J6zMa0pjhw The first one is on the rise of tuition fees as so is my one, so this is similarity. Also it will target the same people as mine because it talks about the effects of the rise. It also talks to lecturers and students as will mine. My one will be different because I will make mine more entertaining. This one doesn’t have any music that appeal to audience and it also doesn’t have any funny bits. My documentary will have both music that my audience will like and also a bit of laughter.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sXYv7OAXUsc This is a very old documentary but it does have some similarities. One is that it talks about universities but unlike mine it is a promotional video for a documentary, where mine will be talking and explaining to people about the rise in tuition fees. Another similarity is that it uses different shot. With my documentary I will use many different shots so that it is not dull to watch. A difference is that mine will have a presenter talking and you will be able to actually see the presenter. As this is a very old documentary they didn’t use a presenter. Another difference is that mine will have interviews will people who are experts in their field and this will help my documentary as the people can give more knowledge on the topic to the audience.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RlxTYSnRDZ8 This is a more recent documentary and it also does have some similarities to what my documentary will have. One is that its shows different senses when the presenter is talking or interviewing someone. This is like mine because when I’m going to interview someone I will have cutaways of different pictures and videos to illustrate what the interviewee is talking about. Another similarity is that it has facts and figures. This helps the audience see the real amount of whatever the presenter is talking about. For my documentary I will also use facts and figures in my documentary to try and shock and show the truth about the rise in tuition fees. The difference with this documentary is that it has an older target audience than mine. I will be targeting 16-24’s so my documentary will have to be more appealing to this target.

QUESTIONS FOR YOUR AUDIENCE 1)  If I don’t get David Cameron or Nick Clegg for an interview, who

else could I try and get.

2)  I would like to make it entertaining by joking about student life, but what else?

3)  Do you think my documentary will appeal to my audience? How?
