According to the Australian newspaper, on average 46,000  Australians pack up and leave the big city each year for the chance of a calm, peaceful and satisfying life in a small country town. Demographer Bernard Salt says the tree change phenomenon surged around Australia from about 2003 onwards and is still under way. He says it followed on from the sea change movement and took root as coastal communities became more crowded and more expensive. Salt is the a partner with KPMG and probably Australia’s most well- known demographer. “One of the factors for a successful tree change is that you’ve got to nd the right town, with all the right attributes,” he says. “Preferably, it’s no more than a two hour drive from a capital city”. “So you need accessibility to a capital city, but not on a daily basis necessarily. They often are cute towns, with a winding river through them – and preferably a town that’s got some historic or architectural credibility to it. Does that sound like the Chittering  Valley to you? Bernard Salt, has selected national “hotspots” for tree changers. I suspect Bernard has never been to our valley, for I’m sure if he had, we would be on the list. Whether we agree we are a “tree changer” hotspot or not, judging by the shifts to non coastal regional areas in other parts of Australia, the next 20 years will see great changes in the valley. With more residents we should also enjoy rst class medicine, school and education options.  As a big fan of the Valley, I hope we can look back and be proud that we’ve excelled in preserving the environment and created a fullling lifestyle. Is Chittering  Valley a “tree changer” hot spot?
