De Bijbelse levensboom of boom des levens (Hebreeuws: ;עץ החייםEtz haChayim)

wordt in het Bijbelboek Genesis in vers 2:9 genoemd als de boom die samen met

de boom van de kennis van goed en kwaad door God werd geplant in de Hof van

Eden (het Paradijs) en waarvan de vruchten eeuwig leven (onsterfelijkheid)

geven

De Germaanse levensboom. De Irminsul was een belangrijk heiligdom voor de

Saksen van de achtste eeuw n.Chr. met vermoedelijk grote symbolische beteke-

nis. Het wordt genoemd en summier omschreven in de Annales regni Fran-

corum, de Translatio St. Alexandri van Rudolf van Fulda en in de Gesta Hamma-

burgensis ecclesiae pontificum

De kabbalistische levensboom is een model waarmee hermetische kabbalisten

het gehele universum en het ontstaan ervan symbolisch voorstellen. Deze

levensboom heeft een andere vorm dan degene die de joodse kabbalisten

kenden. De eerste publicatie waarin deze levensboom voorkwam was Athanasi

Kirchers Oedipus Aegypticus uit 1652. Robert Fludd nam dit diagram in aange-

paste vorm over in zijn Complete Works uit 1617.
