Growing Up in an Underground Railroad Home Tremont resident John Rowell points to a map of the family farm and (below) shows a picture of the house on the farm, a stop on the Underground Railroad. When young John Rowell’s family moved to an old Iowa farm, they had no idea what would be in store for them. At our May meeting John shared his feelings and experiences growing up in an Underground Railroad home. The farm was built by a forward-thinking man, Chester Prindle. Prindle strongly believed that no one should be a slave. In fact, at great risk to all involved, his farm became a stop on the Underground Railroad. John and his family had experiences with some of the former residents, as the place seemed haunted. With stories, maps and photos, John spoke to an interested group of Tremont Historical Society members. We also welcomed members of the Mackinaw Area Historical Society to our program.
