Health tech for all - KPMG believe health technology in the first wave will benefit a wealthy, urban, health conscious population, but, “it will only be a matter of time before it will spread to other demographics.”

Emerging market could surge ahead - KPMG also believe that, “Digital healthcare in emerging markets, may even leapfrog western hospital-centric care models. Patient security – with more and more patient data going from paper files in GP surgeries to online and even in the cloud storage, digital monitoring, downloading data from health tech wearables and video streamed consultations all health providers will need to ensure the safety of data both stored and streamed.

The consumerisation of health – consumers will play an increasing role in diagnosis and prevention according to their care plans devised by GPs. Wearable tech will play a role in remote monitoring by health professionals, but consumers will be able to chose which brand supplies their meds, their tech and their ongoing support technology. Security and privacy will be paramount.

Security streets ahead – SD-WAN providers are really working towards partnering and certifying different security products. Some SD-WAN products automatically route all your traffic through cloud-based security parameters, before it goes out to the internet or to cloud service providers.

Close patient relationships – KPMG cite that pharma companies need to: “build closer relationships with patients. This has many benefits – including better understanding of patient experience and improved adherence. However, the industry has some way to go to become a trusted part of the healthcare ecosystem.” Technology will play a leading role in this patient bridge-building exercise.

From treatment to prevention – KPMG state that this will be a macro trend up to around 2030 with the shift- driven by three underlying developments: 1, ground-breaking new therapies. 2, advances in technology and 3, the consumerisation of health… we did mention that a while back!

Increased complexity for your customers - as the drugs themselves become ever more complicated to manufacture, prescribe, deliver, administer, and reimburse, high-quality patient support services - much of it online via B2B customer portals - will help create and navigate intricate care plans.

The video age for the consumer – video is replacing readable content at a pace. With complex messaging and an imperative for the consumer to understand video will prove a popular medium for healthcare to get the message across… It could also prove a useful tool in proving who has watched and headed the advice given in an increasingly litigious society!


Pharma: the online chemist – with cheap pay-per-consultation, online GP memberships and even the NHS going down the digital consultation and diagnosis route, pharma companies will be expected to take on the ‘online chemist consultation’ as sick people look to browse online before venturing out.

The sick scrutiny – from the warmth of their bed poorly consumers will have no qualms over checking your and your competitors sites for even the most mundane of products from cough sweets to flu remedies. A captive audience has plenty of time… but might be short on patience. Expect video content to ease their pain!


Huge risk in downtime – with an increasingly impatient consumer [internet ‘waiting’ times down from 8 seconds to just 5 seconds!] a fast-paced world expects it all. RIGHT NOW! Downtime, slow sites buffering on video content are a complete turn-off and the consumer will go elsewhere.

Speed up your network to engage the consumer –businesses that have deployed SDWAN are seeing a 69% reduction in the amount of time a typical site is off the network in a year, and an 80% reduction in the length of individual incidents

AR and VR growth – these technologies are now going beyond gaming and into healthcare. On a much-dreaded trip to A&E this year patients may find VR and AR are already a technology active tool used in diagnosis and care. They may even preclude a trip to A&E at all!

The cost of missed pills - Annals of Internal Medicineestimates poor drug adherence costs US taxpayers between $100bn and $289bn every year. To combat this companies such as Proteus have developed a digital pill system which comprises an ingestible sensor, a wearable sensor patch and a mobile app.

Drug bio printers – CDC has conducted "rapid susceptibility testing “on 3D printing on behalf of health departments. If this pilot is deemed successful, the technologies will revolutionise medical deployment globally and could be used to deploy vaccinations to rural areas of the world, antivenoms to injured people in hard to reach areas and speed up the traditional drug deployment process.


AccuVein - is the world's first handheld, non-contact vein illumination tool and uses propriety AR technology to assist healthcare professionals reduce "difficult venous access by 21%", according to AccuVein. By illuminating a patient's veins under the skin in real time, it makes it significantly easier to find a vein first time.

IrisVision - have utilized the tech for a simple, but practical solution to a serious and widespread issue in low vision in the elderly. IrisVision is a rehabilitation platform that allows patients to improve their vision in a multitude of ways. Another example of wearable health tech that can be remotely monitored and adjusted… But only if networks are robust, fast and secure enough.


TowerView Health - has created a digital personal assistant which coordinates with the patient's doctor, their insurance providers and pharmacies to ensure patients take their medication at the right times

Non-human drug trials - In silico drug testing companies such as HumMod simulate the human physiology through algorithms which mimic blood type, bodily fluids, circulation and metabolism rates. Meaning humans may no longer be used in drug trials.

AI savings – the pharmaceutical industry is always looking to increase efficiency, particularly when it comes to drug development. Pharma companies lose margins and often lack the required capital to run trials or testing. At the same time, Artificial Intelligence is maturing - turning the hype into more tangible uses. The predictive and analytic powers of AI enable companies to make smarter, faster, and more strategic decisions.

Tech and Pharma partnerships - smart medical devices will allow VAM players to integrate data capture and analyses into their VAM proposition. 2019 will see increasingly important and powerful tech and pharma partnerships. This trend will trickle through to the off-patent sector too as stakeholders become increasingly comfortable in handling readouts from smart and wearable data sources.


Pushing technology over the consumer ‘edge’ -consumers expect more from tech-rich companies that claim to have an eye on the future and to be harnessing technology in their field. Consumers expect an edgy innovation that truly wows the world into game-changing.

Disrupt or get off the pot! - If your innovation is a mere upgrade on previous tech then consumers will turn off. Apple is learning this to their cost with consumers refusing to buy into the latest phone with a few mega-pixels more. True step change must be a given!


Mobile indexing - websites are now ranked based on the quality of UX they provide on mobile devices. Ignore this trend and Google will rank your site as something mobile users can’t see and a large chunk of traffic will go right past you.

The Two V’s – voice search and video content. If you want V to stand for ‘victory’ these key online trends need to factor in everything from your site to social media. Buffering is not allowed and load times must be below 5 seconds or your audience will vote with a click… elsewhere!


The parable of quality content and the art of storytelling – years ago a brand ‘telling stories’ usually meant they were being less than honest. Today, tell a COMPELLING story via quality, well-written/videoe content and you not only gather a consumer audience, but can radically change consumer perceptions

Don’t over egg IT though - both Samsung and Huawei were caught ‘telling stories’ about their smartphone cameras, claiming photographs actually taken on a DSLR camera were taken by their phones. Naughty, naughty! Consumers will and do test, (and public try, via social media) brands who make less than straightforward claims. Keep it real and measurable.


Engage a captive audience for longer – the more time users spend on your website, the better. Yet the websites with page 1 ranking on Google usually have over 2000 words. Content that is not only longer than in previous years is THE content trend for 2019

When AI stands for Any Idea? - AI technology has massive potential, so, small wonder businesses are actively looking for ways to use it in their work. The same goes for Google, and if (or rather when) they figure it out, it will inevitably affect SEO.


Early adopter fears – Forbes found that 70% of businesses cite “fear,” “digital transformation” and “cost reduction” as the major drivers in adoption of emerging/disruptive technology, knowing they need to embrace tech. Nanotechnology meets the 6 million dollar man – key strategic partnerships will need to be forged between healthcare and technology businesses in order to bring such futuristic health tech as nanotechnology, implants and bionics from the realms of science fiction into the real world… but it’s not that far away and alliances are being formed.

Science meet Silicon – Planet: Describing itself as ‘aerospace know-how meets Silicon Valley ingenuity’, Planet was founded by ex-Nasa scientists and uses satellite imagery to help understand the ever-changing world. They claim that their satellite’s data stream helps solves the world’s toughest challenges across many industries, including agriculture, forestry, energy and infrastructure. And it will aid interpretation and anticipation of future need.


Give online thieves the finger! – as everything goes online we will see an increase in bio security, but don’t worry your finger tips and eyes are quite safe from thieves. Fingopay, developed by start-up Sthaler, allows individuals to make payments by scanning their finger, the veins can’t be damaged, stolen or forged. The finger scanner technology is quick, safe and simple, and removes the cost of manufacturing and managing plastic cards.

Pay for performance – this trend will grow and grow over the coming decade. Johnson & Johnson has started to introduce pay-for-performance drugs within Europe. In the UK they have agreed to reimburse Britain’s National Health Service when patients don't respond to their blood-cancer drug Velcade. Other companies such as GSK and Roche have also been discussing such models too.


Forget windows, get glass for ‘datataining’ – windows at home will become screens and potential ‘display glass’ with the ability to show data, video, attention-grabbing imagery will allow consumers to interact is all about us. But we already have smart phones, you cry! Yes, but a smart phone allows for an audience of one, maybe two. Display glass preaches your brand and product message to the masses while giving real life, real time peer reviews. Get publicly ‘datataining’ for your brand to resonate!
