Probablement dedicareu -segons amunt, segons avall- uns tres minuts a llegir aquestes ratlles. Durantaquest breu espai de temps, hauran passat per damunt dels vostres caps desenes d’avions, gegantsde l’aire solcant els cels d’una banda a l’altre del nostre planeta en vols transoceànics; durant aquestsminuts, els satèl·lits més moderns hauran retratat el nostre i altres móns; en aquest breu període detemps s’hauran enviat milers de missatges pel mòbil i s’hauran fet milions de consultes per Internet...

Vivim en una època de canvis i transformacions constants, una nova era de descobriments en laqual la societat viu a una velocitat frenètica. El cor del món batega vertiginosament.

En aquesta era de revolucions tecnològiques, l’home -el científic, el filòsof, l’artista- cerca encaraen les entranyes de la natura, al ventre del món, de la creació, l’essència de la seva existència, dela seva raó de ser, la seva gènesi.

Des de l’antiguitat -des de Mesopotàmia, l’Antic Egipte, Pèrsia, Índia, Xina, l’Antiga Grècia, l’ImperiRomà, l’Imperi Islàmic, fins als nostres dies, passant pel vell continent medieval- diverses civilitzacionshan cercat l’origen del tot, allò primari per mitjà del qual la matèria se’ns manifesta i se’ns mostra;és a dir, la llavor, la matèria primera que posseeix una existència potencial fins que es convertirà enforma.

L’essència de les coses: aigua, terra, aire, foc

En aquest llarg viatge, foren els alquimistes -que més enllà de les pràctiques protocientífiques i lesllegendes màgiques de la cultura popular que els atribuïren el poder de convertir el plom en or- elsqui conceberen la idea de la formació de tots els cossos i substàncies de l’univers a partir de lacombinació d’aquests quatre elements bàsics.

Excèntrics, curiosos, inquiets, els alquimistes maldaren per trobar el mètode que els permetéstransmutar la matèria, que els donés la capacitat prodigiosa d’alterar els trets (calent, fred; humit,sec; terrenal, celestial; masculí, femení...) en la seva manifestació davant de la resta de la humanitat.

Josep Bou és un alquimista del segle XXI. En aquesta nova exposició el fotògraf igualadí cerca enl’essència de la vida, en allò més primari -aigua, terra, aire, foc- l’element que esdevindrà obraartística, la imatge creada i servida per al desvetllament i el gaudi dels sentits de qui la mira.

Excèntric, curiós, inquiet, Josep Bou troba en la fotografia i en la imatge -més enllà de la sevaprofessió-, una forma d’expressar-se, de manifestar-se, de donar forma i fruit al seu treball creat a

partir d’un tarannà obert constantment a l’experimentació i la recerca de noves mirades. Miradesque albiren el més quotidià, el que ens és més proper. De la nuesa del cos a la natura despullada.

Josep Bou és un viatger, un explorador del segle XXI. La brúixola de la creativitat l’ha dut a mirar iretratar, conèixer i transmetre, paisatges naturals i humans d’arreu del món. Diferents continents,diverses cultures. Però també trobareu en Josep Bou, amb les seves càmeres, retenint instants fugaçosben a prop nostre, als nostres boscos, a les nostres muntanyes, a les nostres platges, a les nostresplaces i carrers i, fins i tot, dins les nostres cases, retratant-los-hi la pell... i l’ànima.

Josep Bou és un artista del segle XXI. Amb el bagatge del domini de la tècnica i dels diversosllenguatges (i dialectes) del món de la fotografia i de la imatge, posats a l’abast i al servei de l’expressió,de la recerca, de la indagació i de l’experimentació, Bou ha sabut situar-se entre l’objecte i el subjecte,entre l’element mirat i l’espectador que el contempla, convertint aquest procés, basat en el mètodei a la vegada en el geni, en una experiència perceptiva, sensorial, emotiva. En art.

ELS QUATRE ELEMENTS

Tots els canvis de la naturalesa tenen origen en el fet que els quatre elements antics es barregen i es tornena separar, ja que tot est format de terra, aire, foc i aigua, per en diferents proporcions. Quan mor unaflor o un animal, els quatre elements es tornen a separar. Aquest s un canvi que podem observar amb elsulls. Per la terra i l aire, el foc i l aigua queden completament inalterats o intactes amb tots aquests canvisen qu participen. s a dir, que no s cert que tot canvia. En realitat, no hi ha res que canvi . El que passas, simplement, que els quatre elements diferents es barregen i se separen, per despr s tornar-se a barrejar.*

Tot succeeix en les ciutats. S’hi alcen els edificis de l’ordre econòmic global. Les ciutats es constitueixen,cada vegada més, com estructures acumulatives. L’accelerat creixement de la ciutat i el seu entornestà provocant grans canvis. Fa la sensació que estem vivint un moment sense límits, on aconseguiruna posicionabilitat és més desitjable que tenir els avantatges d’una posició clara. La naturalesaconforma espais i identitats més enllà de la realitat que sembla representar, a mesura que passi eltemps hi veurem menys. Deixem que la naturalesa participi en el sentir, el desenvolupament i lacreació d’una manera diferent d’encarar els esdeveniments.

Un dels aspectes puntals d’aquesta peça creativa se centra en la necessitat d’emprendre un viatgeper una xarxa de transport imaginari, a través de la terra, l’aire, el foc i l’aigua. Imatges lligades a laidea de paisatges, o a la multiplicitat de paisatges. Històries explicades de maneres diferents,interpretacions allunyades d’estereotips. Imatges en moviment sobre una realitat que comprèn desdel més pròxim i quotidià fins a tot el que tan sols intuïm. Imatges que conformen un repertorid’experiències plenes de recursos i ficcions, poètiques amables o aspres però que ens condueixen perun univers en transformació permanent.

Els quatre elements -antics, terra, aire, foc i aigua- protagonitzen narracions estructurals sense principini fi, construccions o incidents generats a partir del enorme potencial que la imatge en movimentés capaç de proporcionar-nos, i que són claus per transportar i apropar el públic a una reflexió sobrela percepció de l’acció visual, la importància del fragment, la participació i integració del receptori on cada espectador rep la invitació d’elaborar el seu propi discurs sobre “els quatre elements antics”del territori geogràfic del nostre país.

La majoria de les coses no succeeixen en la nostra imaginació, l’accelerat creixement, la forçaemergent de dominis inabastables, la globalització, el triomf de l’espai virtual, no tenim les einesadequades per mesurar les incidències sobre el nostre petit globus terraqüi i menys encara sobre elnostre propi destí, però sí que podem seguir inventant noves maneres de caminar per aquest nostreunivers.

L’aigua ha estat important en l’imaginari que haconfigurat el meu món de poeta, escriptor i pintor.

El mar és ple de misteris i, per tant, és una micametàfora de la vida espiritual, de la vida que noentenem.

Les muntanyes són l’origen de l’aigua, les muntanyescriden la pluja.

Mar de pedres negres, de platges de còdols. Mar deplatges granítiques, aquesta costa nostra, mar dela meva infantesa, a la qual ara no puc anar senseplorar, quan veig en què s’ha convertit.

El foc són moltes coses: la transformació, la guerra,la llar de foc, la màgia, l’alquímia, la nit de SantJoan. El foc és la mesura de totes les coses.

El foc és present en totes les cultures de la Terra.Fins i tot, en moltes d’elles, en els enterraments.

En la filosofia Aristotèlica, la terra i l’aigua van avall,el foc i l’aire van amunt, és un univers poètic. En lamodernitat, la taula periòdica dels elements, la deNewton, ens deixa orfes de poesia.

Sempre m’he apropat més a la terradirecta que a la terra desfigurada pelsarbres. La terra ho es tot, no podemdeslligar la terra dels altres elements.

La crítica la fem des de la consciènciaque tenim d’aquest món tandesnaturalitzat, destructor, i aquestacrítica està en funció dels nostressentiments vers ell.

L’home hipotecat queda inutilitzat perla crítica, això és diabòlic. Crec quehauríem de trobar un equilibri per éssermés conseqüents amb la terra.

A Lleida, quan jo erapetit, hi havia un solpont. Però sempre hi hahagut un sol riu, elSegre.

A la Costa Brava hi hepogut tastar la salabrordel mar, una salabrorautèntica.

El naixement d’un riués pràcticamentimpossible de veure, esformen diversos rierolsque sorgeixen de laterra i, en forma detrenat, formen un riu.

Realment l’aigua m’haacompanyat sempre, itinc alguns capítolsdedicats a l’aigua, und’ells fa referència a lescoses que es bellugueni de com ens quedemde bocabadats davantl’aigua que corre odavant les flames quecrepiten al foc.

L’atmosfera del Pol Nord és tan neta que pots gaudir de paisatgesque estan a 50 km. Aquí arribem, com a molt, a 5 km.

L’aire és el gran oblidat; com que no es veu, de vegades ens pensemque no el necessitem.

El vent, quan és a terra, sembla que vingui tot de la mateixa direcció.Amb el globus te n’adones que hi ha capes amb diferents direccionsen intervals de 100 m. de diferència.

La vida es desenvolupava al’entorn del foc, una de lesarts més antigues, és l’arten viu; el teatre, la dansa,la música neixen al costatde les fogueres. Amb el focnaixia l’espectacle.

Els quatre elements no es poden destriar entre si, uns ens porten als altres,de manera encadenada.

L’aire, segons en quins indrets, es transforma en vent. El vent és un elementde lluita i supervivència.

El foc, amb el seu poder devastador, aconsegueix transformar la terra.

La muntanya no ens ha fetni millors ni pitjors, ens haajudat a formar-nos com apersones.

El vent diposita la neu d’unespai a l’altre de lamuntanya, i quan vascaminat per una diagonalde neu pots sentir com esva esquerdant, esberlantaquella terra plena d’aire.

L’aire, el vent, és capritxoscom la vida mateixa.

Quan l’home va dominar el foc és undels moments en què començal’arquitectura. En la foscor absolutano es pot apreciar l’espai.

L’aire és la matèria prima de l’espaii l’espai és l’arquitectura. Elcomponent essencial de l’arquitecturaés el resultant del que deixa lamatèria, que és l’espai.

El foc és l’únic element que pottransformar els altres elements.

Josep Bou neix a Igualada el 1950. La sevaformació fotogràfica es realitza a Bèlgica, onexperimenta amb imatges.

La seva personalitat fotogràfica es veureflectida en noranta exposicions individualsi col·lectives (Photokina – Sonimag -Primavera Fotogràfica, Photo España...).Portfolis i mencions publicades en mitjansde comunicació nacionals i internacionals,TV, premsa i revistes especialitzades. Tépublicats set llibres d’autor i un llibre d’artista.Entre els premis i mencions a la seva tascafotogràfica cal destacar la Medalla d’Or delFestival de Nova York.

Membre fundador de la AFP, ha representaten diverses ocasions els fotògrafs espanyolsen certàmens internacionals de fotografia.Ha col·laborat com a assessor amb Kodak iAgfa. Director de fotografia en documentals,videoclips i spots. Jurat en importantsconcursos nacionals de fotografia. La sevaactivitat docent es desenvolupa en diferentscursos, tallers, seminaris i Master Classes pera professionals. Col·labora com a professoren les escoles Gris Art i IDEP. You will probably spend about three minutes readingthese lines – maybe a few seconds more, maybe a fewless. During this short space of time, dozens of aeroplaneswill have passed over your head – giants of the air,ploughing the skies of our planet from one side to theother on trans-oceanic flights. During those few minutes,the most modern satellites will have photographed ourworld and others; in this brief period of time, thousandsof messages will have been sent by mobile phone andmillions of Internet searches will have been made…We live in a period of constant change andtransformation, a new age of discovery in which societylives at a frenetic speed. THE FOUR ELEMENTS

All changes in nature originate from the fact that the fourancient elements are mixed together and separated again,as everything is made up of earth, air, fire and water,although in different proportions. When a flower or ananimal dies, the four elements are separated once again.This is a change we can see with our eyes. But earth, air,fire and water remain completely unchanged or intact,despite all the changes they take part in. That is, it is nottrue that everything changes. In fact, there is nothing thatchanges. What happens is, simply, that the four elementsare mixed and separate to mix together once again.*

It all happens in cities. There stand the buildings ofglobal economic order. Cities are increasingly formedas accumulative structures. The accelerated growth ofcities and their surroundings are causing great changes.It feels as if we are living in a time without limits, whereachieving positionality is more desirable that havingthe advantages of a clear position. Nature forms spacesand identities beyond the reality it seems to represent,as, with the passage of time, we see less of it. Let’s allow

nature to participate in feeling, developing and creatinga different way of facing up to events.One of the leading aspects of this creative piece iscentred on the need to take a trip on an imaginarytransport network, through earth, air, fire and water.Images linked to the idea of landscapes, or themultiplicity of landscapes. Stories told in different ways,interpretations far from stereotypes. Images moving ontop of a reality that includes everything, from what iseveryday and closest to us to all we know only throughintuition. In a hot-airballoon you realize that there are different layers anddifferent directions with intervals of 100m.

Space cannot beappreciated in the darkness.Air is the raw material from which space is made andspace is architecture. The essential component ofarchitecture is the result of what matter leaves, whichis space.Fire is the only element that can transform otherelements.

The threshing floor,the mowing, the threshing, the stubble, and the cabin,this land, naked of green. This has been a constant allthrough my life.I have always been closer to the bare earth, than toearth disfigured by trees. The earth is everything; wecannot separate the earth from the other elements.Our appreciation comes from our knowledge of thisworld, so denaturalized, so destructive and thisappreciation works according our feelings regarding it.The mortgaged man is made useless by this appreciation,this is diabolical. I think, that we have to find a balancein order to be more consistent with the earth.

JOSEP VALLVERDÚWriterIn Lleida, when I was a boy, there was only one bridge.There has only ever been one sole river, the Segre.On the Costa Brava I could taste the salt of the sea,real sea salt.The birth of a river is practically impossible to see;small streams emerge from the earth and intertwineforming a river.In actual fact water has always been with me, and Ihave some chapters dedicated to it. One of them makesreference to the things that bob upon its surface and

how we stare, mouths agog before water that moves orflames that burst from a fire.

JUANJO GARRAAlpinistThe wind decides whether or not the clouds, snowstormsand valley rains must approach.The mountain has not made us better or worse; it hashelped to form us as people.The wind deposits the snow from one spot on themountain to another and when you walk on a diagonalof snow you can feel how it cracks, breaking the earththat is full of air.The air and the wind are fickle, like life itself.

Josep Bou was born in Igualada in 1950. He receivedinstruction in Photography in Belgium where heconcentrated on experimenting with images.His singular photographic personality is reflected inover ninety individual and collective expositions,among them Photokina, Sonimag, Primavera Fotograficaand Foto Espa a. Over the years he has received manyspecial mentions in national and international media,TV, written press and specialized magazines. As anauthor Mr. Bou has published seven books as well asone as an artist. Among prizes and special mentionsfor his photography, the Gold Medal in the highlyesteemed New York Festival has been one of the mostimportant.Founding member of the AFP, he has representeddiverse Spanish Photographers in internationalphotography competitions. An adviser for Kodak andAgfa, he has also been the director of photography fordocumentaries, video clips and spots. As well as beinga Jury Member for important national photographiccompetitions, Mr. Bou is a regular on the round tableand debate circuit within the photography community.He is also the creator and director of the photographycompetition Passanant Foto. Mr. Bou shares his vastknowledge with other professionals in different courses,workshops, seminars and Master Classes. He collaboratesas a professor at the Gris Art and IDEP schools.Part of his extensive photographic work can be foundin public archives, museums and private photographycollections.
