TIDBITS® LOOKS AT

BASEBALL PITCHERSby Janet Spencer

In honor of spring training, come along with Tidbits as we remember some unforgettable moments brought to you by memorable pitchers.• In the 1940s, Bobo Newsom was batting for the

Yankees against White Sox pitcher Joe Haynes. He swung and nicked the ball, which rolled back to the pitcher. ARIES (March 21-April 19): It’s not whether you win or lose, but how you play the game. Don’t put too much emphasis on romantic pursuits; simply enjoy the thrill of the chase. Sharing ideas with a partner may yield valuable new insights in the week ahead.TAURUS (April 20-May 20): A rolling stone gathers no moss. Keep the moss at bay by staying active through creative activities this week. All lights are green for matters of the heart, whether strengthening a current relationship or testing new waters.GEMINI (May 21-June 20): A good idea that never gets out of your head is wasteful. Keep a record of any brainstorms you may have this week, as you never know when they may come in handy later. Your enthusiasm appeals to the opposite sex.CANCER (June 21-July 22): Maintain a controlled environment this week. Hold the troubles of the world at bay by carving out your own private niche of peace and solitude. Take advantage of spare time by getting ahead of schedule.LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): There’s no time to lose in the coming week. Regardless of whether you’ve made careful preparations, you must take action or your window for success may close. Don’t take on a task by yourself when friends are readily available to help.VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Get out and mingle. Social gatherings may yield interesting new acquaintances and valuable new business contacts. In the week ahead you’ll fare far better working in a crowd than on your own.LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Avoid collecting dust. Staying active is the key to well-being whether it includes taking a brisk walk, a workout, or tackling household chores. Raise that heart rate to prepare mind and body for the week ahead.SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Be a sidekick. A close friend or loved one may require a little backup to see their plans through this week. Offer your services and tag along for the ride. People aren’t comfortable acting on their own.SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): In the week ahead, do your best to adapt and overcome. Don’t stick with a plan if you can already tell it’s doomed to fail. Stay prepared to deal with all possible outcomes, as the playing field will be constantly changing until the end.CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Make the most of your situation. Find a positive benefit in any endeavor you choose this week, whether gathering information from a magazine article or having an insightful conversation with a friend.AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): The future isn’t what it used to be. A goal that once seemed a possible dream may now seem impractical. Take time this week to re-evaluate your situation and change your long-term objectives as necessary.PISCES (Feb. 19-Mar. 20): Aim to impress. Capture the fancy of the object of your affection: Go do that voodoo that you do so well. Find common ground and share new and exciting experiences in the week ahead.

PITCHING SHENANIGANS (continued)• In 1961, Cleveland Indian pitcher Herb Score

was hit in the eye by a line drive hit by New York Yankee Gil McDougald. The ball bounced off Score’s head and rolled to first base, where the Cleveland first baseman nabbed it and put the batter out. Score was credited with an assist.

• William Kennedy was pitching for Brooklyn in 1897 when the umpire called a close decision against him. Kennedy lost his temper and hurled the baseball at the umpire, intending to smack him in the head. The ball narrowly missed the ump, who called the ball in play. A runner on base scored before the catcher could retrieve the ball. Brooklyn lost the game 2 - 1.

• Joe Engel, pitching in Washington, did not do a very good job. The question was not whether his pitches would go over the plate but whether they would stay in the ballpark. Manager Clark Griffith called him to his office one day and informed him he was being sent to Minneapolis. “Who am I being traded for?” Engel asked. “No one,” replied Griffith. “It’s an even trade!”

• In 1918, Otis Crandall was pitching for Los Angeles against Salt Lake City. He had a perfect no-hitter going. There were two out in the ninth inning and not a single man had reached base. Then his brother Karl came to bat for Salt Lake. He made a base hit — the only known instance where a no-hitter was broken by the pitcher’s brother.

• Bob Fothergill was a big man. He was a good hitter, but he was sensitive about his weight. As Leo Durocher got ready to pitch against him, he called out, “Stop the game!” and approached the umpire. When the ump asked what was wrong, Durocher replied, “Don’t you know the rules?” he asked, pointing at Fothergill. “BOTH those guys can’t bat at the same time!” Fothergill was so angry he couldn’t bat well and struck out.

• Ty Cobb, playing for the Detroit Tigers in 1912, was suspended from play when he jumped into the stands and beat up an abusive heckler. His sympathetic teammates went on strike. So the manager advertised for new players to fill in the next day at a game in Philadelphia. This impromptu team went up against the world champion Oakland A’s. The pitcher allowed

Stain your exterior woodwork with confidence

Do-It-Yourself:(NC)—The look you want for doors, windows, shutters, moldings, fences, and decks can be achieved by applying the right colour and type of stain in an attractive combination. Here are the answers to the most frequently asked questions on this home improvement topic from www.olympic.com.

Q: I want the natural wood grain to come through on my front door, but not on the shutters, so how do I vary the stains to achieve that look?A: You can get at least four different looks depending upon the stain you choose. A clear stain will allow the wood to weather gray naturally. A toner stain delivers a slight hint of colour as it maintains the natural beauty of wood. A semi-transparent stain applies subtle colour that still allows the wood grain and texture to show. A solid stain is a rich opaque covering that also allows the texture of the wood to show. To save time when doing it yourself, the Olympic Maximum stain-and-sealant-in-one line is a very popular choice.

Q: How do I know when it’s time to re-stain?A: Over several seasons, weather and UV exposure causes stain to break down and then it allows moisture to enter the wood. Test the questionable finish by placing a small amount of water on it for a few seconds. If, after a couple minutes, the water soaks in, the wood should be re-stained. If the water droplets remain on the surface, the stain is still effective. It’s important to determine the integrity of the stain on the wood before recoating as different procedures apply.

Q: What steps are necessary to ensure that the stain on my deck has a long life?A: Start by stripping off any existing stain (a specialized deck cleaner is also available from Olympic) and then sand the surface to remove loose wood fibers and any contamination. This will ensure that the new coating is evenly absorbed. Make sure to follow the product directions when applying the new stain.

PITCHING SHENANIGANS (continued)25 hits and 7 walks in 8 innings, but did manage to get one strike-out. An infielder was hit in the

mouth by a ground ball and lost two teeth. An outfielder was hit on the head by a fly ball. This pick-up team got 4 hits and made 10 errors and the final score was 24 - 2. The next day, the regular team members ended their strike, paid their fines, and went back to work, except for Cobb, who was suspended for 10 days.

• Charlie Grimm was managing the losing Chicago Cubs. One day he got an excited call from his scout saying that he found a pitcher who struck out 27 men in a row. Only one man had even managed to hit a foul. He asked if he should sign the pitcher. Grimm replied, “Sign up the guy who hit the foul. We’re looking for hitters!”

• In 1939, Bob Feller was the best known pitcher in the country, playing for Cleveland. On Mother’s Day, he brought his mother from her Iowa farm to Chicago so she could see him play. A Chicago White Sox batter slugged a foul ball into the stands — where it hit Feller’s mother, knocking her unconscious.

• Germany Schaefer was batting against Nick Altrock. There was a man on first. Schaefer swung and missed a fast ball. Then the pitcher, pretending he was getting ready to throw to the batter, let loose with a fast ball to first base, where the runner was leading off.

Headaches Studies have shown that roughly a third of all people suffer from headaches. The causes of headaches are many; they include such things as spinal misalignment, certain foods, toxic fumes, preservatives and alcohol. Spinal misalignments (subluxations) are shown to be involved in up to 80% of all headaches.

Unfortunately, our society in the past has taken numerous drugs to fight off the pain associated with headaches, instead of trying to remove the cause of these headaches. However, we are moving into a time where society is starting to look for the causes. Utilizing natural approaches, chiropractors are capable of removing headaches, or dramatically reducing the occurrence and frequency of these headaches.

When there is a loss of the normal range of motion of the vertebrae in the upper neck region, nerves that feed either the front, sides, back, or top of the head are impinged. Recent research at the University of Odense, Denmark and Harvard Medical School has shown that chiropractic treatments can dramatically decrease the frequency and length of headaches as well as the number of painkillers needed for relief. With a proper spinal examination, a chiropractor is able to determine if someone has spinal subluxations and nerve blockage to the head region. Besides spinal care, chiropractors will look at the need for nutritional changes, stress management, and exercise.

Lifestyle suggestions for Diabetics 4- Eye Health

Eye health is often a problem that is overlooked by most patients suffering from high blood sugar levels. There might be no jarring warning signs but sometimes the following symptoms will develop or occur- double vision, flashes of light, dark floaters or dark spots and blurred vision.

Diabetics will usually develop cataracts earlier in life and they will also usually progress faster than those without diabetes. They also have a very high chance of being affected by diabetic retinopathy, a condition where new fragile blood vessels in the retina are damaged due to the overabundance of glucose and/or fructose from our diet. If the eyes are not vigilantly monitored, it could lead to blurred vision and then potential blindness.

Compared to others that are not diabetic, people with diabetes are 40% more likely to suffer from glaucoma, this is the condition where the fluid inside the eyes do not drain properly; it than leads to excess pressure that builds up inside the eyes. This excess pressure could permanently damage nerves and other blood vessels in the eyes.

Workable Lifestyle Suggestions:Check your eyesight at least once a year. Blurred vision may not just be a sign of a change in prescription, consult an ophthalmologist or optometrist before determining whether you need a new pair of eye glassesConsider regular intake of foods that are rich in Lutein and Zeaxanthin (i.e. eggs, spinach, pumpkins, broccoli, turnip greens and peas) and protect your eyes from harmful UV rays. An expensive herb - Saffron was recently found to help in slowing down the cataract progressionRemember to give your eyes a rest especially if you are often focused on a computer monitor or smart phone for extended periods of time.

Life is given; Lifestyles are ChosenStay tuned for next week’s Lifestyle Bits to find out about Vigour Health and Beauty’s Lifestyle suggestions for those living with skin problems -Eczema.

In order to get the best car shine for the new season, Autoglym recommends the following three easy steps: Step 1 – Wash Wash your car regularly; doing so will help to preserve the finish of your car’s paintwork. Avoid household detergents as they can have a dulling effect on your paintwork. Instead, use a product designed for car washing, like the popular Autoglym product called Bodywork Shampoo Conditioner. Step 2 – Polish Many of us tend to skip the polishing step and go straight to waxing –don’t make this common mistake. Polishing not only corrects paintwork and rectifies imperfections such as light scratches and swirl marks, but it also restores colour and shine. Step 3 – Protect Waxing is an important final touch to protect your car’s paintwork against harmful environmental factors such as bird droppings and sap. Unlike polish, waxing contains no cleaning or restoring agents and should only be used to seal in the result achieved from polishing: clean, dry, blemish free paintwork. Lauren was hanging around a property for several months. The people couldn’t give him a home so they kept him in an outdoor run for a few weeks until we had room for him at Katie’s Place. Poor Lauren hasn’t had anyone he could trust for a while and he was nervous of us when he arrived. He learned to trust again and began accepting attention and cuddles. He was lucky enough to find another home but that home did not work out and Lauren was returned. Unfortunately Lauren feels betrayed once again and is having some issues trusting humans again. He cannot help himself and comes to us for attention but is pretty skittish and weary of any contact. You can see the poor boy is torn. He wants the love but seems almost afraid of accepting it. He is a very handsome fellow with a unique black spot on his chin

surrounded by snowy white fur from his nose to his ruff, and the tips of both his forepaws are white. Lauren needs a loving, safe, and quiet home where he can learn to trust again. Mira was found in a carrier, abandoned outside a door and left in the cold, so we know little about her history. She

appears to be a fairly young cat with lots of personality. She is extremely talkative and will talk your ear off if you let her. Mira is the type of cat that will sit at the door of her pen looking out and will try to get the attention of anyone walking by. Once you are in the pen with her she will stay glued to your body while you go about your business. She is very sweet and very loving. She can get a bit overwhelmed and will let you know when she needs a little break from all the love. She is a beautiful girl with a very soft and shiny black coat. She has stunning huge eyes that follow you everywhere you go. Because we have no history on this little doll we cannot tell you if she is good with kids or dogs but we can tell you she would probably try really hard to be. Come meet Mira and fall in love.

“HEMINGWAY & GELLHORN”: Nicole Kidman and Clive Owen bring acting heft to this made-for-HBO drama about the passionate relationship of war reporter Martha Gellhorn and iconic author Ernest Hemingway. While their work reflected major world events and deep personal emotions, their personal interaction gave them many of their greatest challenges. Director Philip Kaufman (“The Right Stuff ”) also includes David Strathairn, Molly Parker, Parker Posey, Peter Coyote and Tony Shalhoub in his cast. DVD extra: audio commentary by Kaufman and editor Walter Murch. ***

“MARVEL CINEMATIC UNIVERSE: PHASE ONE - AVENGERS ASSEMBLED”: If you’re a fan of Marvel Comics superheroes, here’s a little piece of heaven ... six of the live-action feature films featuring the characters, several of them also in 3-D versions, packaged together in a Blu-ray box along with a new bonus disc titled “The Phase One Archives.” Each of the included movies - “Iron Man,” “Iron Man 2,” “Thor,” “Captain America: The First Avenger,” “The Incredible Hulk” and (of course) “Marvel’s The Avengers” - also has its own bonus features. Stars include Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Edward Norton, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson and Jeremy Renner. ***

“JACKIE ROBINSON: MY STORY”: The timing of this release is far from coincidental, given the imminent opening of the movie “42,” also about the life and career of baseball icon Robinson. Here, archival footage and photos are blended with dramatized sequences to recall his barrier-breaking impact on the sport and on society in general. Former Robinson teammates including Don Newcombe and Carl Erskine offer comments. ***

“NOVA: RISE OF THE DRONES”: With all the headlines the aerial devices have been making lately, this episode of the PBS science series is particularly timely. It examines the various purposes and characteristics of the vehicles, often deployed for military surveillance that can be a cause of great concern and political tension ... as has been reconfirmed in recent times. ***

“FULL HOUSE: THE COMPLETE SEASONS SEVEN AND EIGHT”: The final two years of the popular sitcom - one of ABC’s top attractions during its run, thanks in no small part to the huge popularity of twins Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, who became a cottage industry unto themselves - are packaged in this collection. The siblings’ shared character, Michelle, is at the heart of stories that involve Christmas-present confusion and (in the series finale) a horse-riding accident; Bob Saget, John Stamos, Dave Coulier, Candace Cameron, Jodie Sweetin and Lori Loughlin also star.***

Q: We adopted a kitten from a shelter, and at only 7 months she already weighs 14 pounds. We feed her a half a can of canned food each morning and have dry food available all the time. Sparky even sleeps near the food bowl, and eats often. I believe she must have gone hungry before she came to us. To cut calories, I have switched to adult dry food. Our other cat is 13 and is a healthy weight. How can we help Sparky lose weight? - D.H., Las Vegas, NVA: Dr. Jane Brunt, executive director of the non-profit cat advocacy CATalyst Council, says, “It’s great you’re concerned about your cat’s weight, as this is a critical issue. It sounds like Sparky may be obese, which can lead to health problems. See your veterinarian to insure Sparky is healthy and also to devise a (weight-loss) plan.” That plan will likely include adjusting Sparky’s diet, as well as the way you feed this cat. You may be urged to feed Sparky on a schedule rather than leaving food out all the time. “When he looks for food, instead take a toy and play, or groom him,” says Brunt, of Baltimore, MD. In fact, exercise is a good idea. Hiding treats in food-dispensing toys and puzzles would also force Sparky to exercise as she searches for the goodies. Work with your veterinarian to develop a schedule, so you can keep tabs on Sparky’s weight loss. And, of course, no crash diets!

Say You Saw It In...

▶ Al Lakusta, an 8th grade teacher, discovered one of Canada’s richest fossil beds in 1973. Located near Grande Prairie, Alberta, it’s one of the densest dinosaur beds in the world, containing about 100 bones per square metre, representing hundreds

of individual dinosaurs of various species. It’s theorized the density of fossils was due to a large herd of animals drowning in a flood or while crossing a river some 73 million years ago.▶ There are 203 lakes called “Long Lake” in Canada, as well as an additional 182 “Mud Lakes.”

▶ There’s a mountain called the Snow Dome rising above Columbia Glacier. Water running down the west side of Snow Dome flows through British

Columbia and ends up in the Pacific Ocean. Water running down the north side goes down the Mackensie River and into the Arctic Ocean. Water running down the east side of the mountain eventually ends up in the Atlantic Ocean.

▶ Umimmak School in Grise Fiord on Ellesmere Island in Nunavut is the most northerly school in the country. There are about 65 students, most of them Inuit.

PITCHER SHENANIGANS (continued)• When he got the ball back, Altrock let fly

another scorcher of a fastball. Schaefer got a second strike. He threw down his bat and walked back to the dugout. “Hey,” called the ump, “You’ve only got two strikes!” “No,” replied Schaefer, “It’s three strikes — I swung at that pitch he threw to first base!”

• In the early 1900s, Rube Waddell was such a great pitcher that all batters feared him. One day the pitcher on the opposing team got a great idea: if he could tire Waddell out before the game, his pitching would be off. So he challenged Waddell to a pitching contest. Whichever one of them could throw the farthest would win $5. They both showed up before the game and threw the ball as far as they could. Waddell’s throw went farthest. The opposing pitcher challenged him to throw that far again. He did. In fact, he threw the ball that far around 50 times. Convinced that Waddell’s arm would be worn out, the rival pitcher handed over the $5. That afternoon, Waddell struck out 14 batters and his team won handily. As he was walking to the clubhouse, he called out to the other pitcher, “Hey, thanks for the workout this morning. That was swell practice!”

• Texas University was up against the Yankees in an exhibition game when Lou Gehrig came up to bat. There were two runners on base and it was three and two for Gehrig. The catcher signaled the pitcher, the pitcher nodded — then threw a straight ball right to home plate. Gehrig sent it clear out of the park. The catcher marched up the pitcher, ranting at him for not paying attention to the signals. “Why did you throw him such a nice pitch?” he yelled. The pitcher was not sorry. “I got to thinking: I’ll never pitch a Big League game and maybe I’ll never get to see a game at the Yankee Stadium, and I sure did want to see Gehrig bust just one!”

▶ The biggest tree in Canada is called the Carmanah Giant. It’s a Sitka spruce on the west coast of Vancouver Island that reaches 95 m tall (310 ft) which is taller than the Peace Tower in Ottawa. Not only is it the tallest tree in Canada, but it’s also the tallest Sitka spruce in the world. It’s estimated to be about 400 years old.
