Assembly and Operating Instructions For The

Underwater Filter Model UF-1000

1.0 INTRODUCTION

The Underwater Filter Model UF-1000 is a self contained, portable Underwater Filter System that is designed to operate in the spent fuel pool or Rx Cavity to rapidly clean up water for establishing and maintaining water clarity. The UF-1000 uses eight standard Tri Nuclear filter cartridges and provides a very low flow flux through the filters. This low flow flux results in higher dirt loading and/or longer runs between filter change outs compared to the UF-600 system. The UF-1000 system operates under negative pressure. This design feature eliminates the need for special bolted pressure closures on the pump housing requiring tooling for operation. The pump housing seals with a simple flat cover plate held in place by negative pressure during operation.

One of the many benefits of this design feature is that it eliminates the need for special bolted pressure closures on the pump and strainer housings and thus, requires no special tooling to install or remove a pump underwater. With the pump installed correctly in the pump tube, the weight of the pump keeps it in place during normal operation. (see Fig. 1.1)

2.0 EQUIPMENT DESCRIPTION 2.1 UF-1000 HOUSING:

The housing for the UF-1000 contain openings for eight (8) standard Tri Nuclear filter cartridges and one 12” diameter pump tube. Lifting for the unit is provided by two off set lifting plates. The housing is constructed of 304 stainless steel.

Two (2) rigid vertical plated with shackle holes span across the pump tube and provide a means for lifting the UF-1000 housing.

Operation of the UF-1000: Unfiltered water from the cavity pool enters the top of the eight installed filter cartridges. Filtered water passing through the filter cartridges enter through a common bottom shroud and into the pump housing. The submersible pump draws water from the pump housing and discharges filtered water back to the cavity pool via two 4”diameter discharge hoses. Filters placed into the filter housings are sealed by an O-ring mounted in the filter tube sheet. Negative pressure developed in the filter cartridges provide a positive seal between the filter cartridge and the mounted O-ring. The pump housing has four 3/8”drain holes drilled through the bottom support plate to allow for filling or draining water into or out of the housing.

2.2 SUBMERSIBLE PUMP ASSEMBLY 2.2.1 PP-1000SC

The PP-1000SC is a single stage, 20HP 460V/3Ph/60Hz pump and motor comes assembled and ready for operation. Nominal rated flow through the PP-1000SC pump is 1000GPM. The assembly includes the pump cover, discharge piping, flow sensor tap, and a top lifting bale. The pump mounted in the pump tube draws water through the filter cartridges and discharges filtered water back to the pool via two 4in discharge hoses.

The pump discharge piping has a flow sensor tap for mounting the flow sensor and two 4” male camlock discharge couplings.

The pump has one 1” hole drilled through its internal check valve to allow for pump drainage when lifting and removing the pump from the pool.

There is a stainless steel electrical disconnect mounted on the pump cover for the 100 ft PSC-100P power cable. This allows for the removal of the power cable for ease of handling and equipment storage. The electrical disconnect on the pump cover is a “Sea Con” type connector.

There is a seal plug (P/N: SC-P) that should be installed on the pump sea con connector when ever the power cord is not installed. The seal plug provides sealing of the connector for underwater storage of the pump (without the power cable) and protects the threads of the sea con connector when the power cord is not installed.

DOUBLE SHAFT SEAL – Rubber lip seal with a ceramic/carbon mechanical prevents penetration of particles into motor. UPPER RADIALBEARING –Water lubricated ceramic bearing runs against a tungsten carbide shaft journal. These materials provide a long lasting bearing that is highly resistant to sand wear.

2.3 CB-PR-260-4XP-380 PHASE REVERSING CONTROL BOX WITH TWISTLOCK PLUGS

The CB-PR-1000-4XP is a NEMA 4X type fiberglass (14x16) that has two 460V/3Ph/60Hz solid state controllers with an single adjustable over current trip. The control box has a “Phase Rotation Switch” with safety cover, start/stop pushbuttons and a green “run” indicating light on the front of the panel. The Phase Reversing feature in this control box allows the operator to change the phase rotation of the pump WITHOUT having to open the control box and swap two of the three motor leads. This is accomplished by a switch on the front of the control box and two motor starters inside the control box. These two motor starters are wired such that when the “Phase Rotation Switch” is in the “A” position the pump motor rotates one direction and when the “Phase Rotation Switch” is in the “B” position the pump motor rotates in the opposite direction. If the “Phase Rotation Switch” is in the center position, neither motor starter will be energized and the pump will not start. The 460V / 3ph / AC 30amp Nema 4X Twist Lock plugs allow the operator to quickly and easily install the PC-50 drop cable and PSC-100P pump power cable to the control box without drilling and connecting bare cables to internal terminal blocks in the control box. See Drawing TNC-018-07 for Phase Reversing Control Box details.

2.4 POWER CABLE (P/N:PSC-100P):

The PSC-100P Pump Power cable is a 100ft 10/4 SO cable with a male Nema 4x Twist Lock plug x Sea Con Connector. This Pump Power cable is to supply power to the pump from the Phase Reversing Control Box.

2.5 DROP CABLE (P/N: PC-50):

The PC-50 Control Box Drop Cable is a 50’ 10/4 SO cable with a female Nema 4X twist lock plug x bare wire. This drop cable is to supply the control box from the in plant power source / motor control center / welding outlets etc.

2.6 FLOW METER AND SENSOR (P/N: FM-260): The UF-1000 flow meter is installed to provide a gross indication of system flow. System flow rate is a gauge for determining change in pressure drop through the filters. Under normal operations a filter would be changed out when system flow rate drops to ~50% of clean filter value. The flow meter used for the UF-1000 is a self-powered analog meter that provides flow indication from 0-2000GPM. The flow meter uses the amplitude of the flow sensor signal to drive the 100-microamp meter movement. The flow sensor for the UF-1000 is a paddlewheel type flow sensor. The paddlewheel has a re-enforced sleeve that covers the titanium shaft and is designed to minimize wear of the rotor. When water flows past the paddlewheel and it rotates, the flow sensor produces a sinusoidal waveform with frequency and amplitude directly proportional to the flow rate. The sensor comes equipped with 100ft of instrument cable. 2.7 DISCHARGE HOSES (P/N: PH-4x25)

The UF-1000 comes equipped with two 4”diameter x 25’ long flat discharge hoses w/ MxF camlock couplers that connect to the discharge of the PP-1000SC pump.

2.8 FILTER STORAGE RACK (P/N: UT-3/6)

A six (6) tube 20in dia. x 33in high rack for holding filter cartridges underwater adjacent to the Underwater Filter Unit to facilitate the speedy underwater change-out and replacement of filter cartridges. This rack has a removable center lift bail that terminates above the filter cartridges for easy lifting. The UT-3/6 is designed to be easily stored in a standard 55 gal. waste drum.

2.9 HANGING FILTER STORAGE RACK (P/N: UT-3H)

A 42in x 8in x 4in (LWH) hanging rack for holding six (6) spare or spent filter cartridges. This rack can be hung from the railing around the pool or the fuel bridge and allows for more efficient filter change out.

2.11 ROPE-FILTER LIFT TOOL (P/N: UT-9) A special 18in high tool is used for changing out filter cartridges remotely underwater using the UT-15 Utility Chain. This tool uses a "positive latch" mechanism allowing for a very simple, effective, and quick method for filter change-out.

2.12 CONTROL PANEL:

The UT-10A control panel mounts the flow meter and control box in one convenient location. The control panel is designed to hang from a typical hand rail.

2.13 DIFFUSER PIPE (UT-13)

Two of these pipe assemblies (4.5" diameter x 32"lg.) are connected to the two 4" discharge hoses from the UF-1000 Unit. They are used to minimize the high discharge water velocity preventing hose-end whipping and surface water agitation.

2.14 PP-1000SC PUMP LIFT HOOK (UT-14)

This stainless steel grapple hook is used with a cable (supplied by customer) to install or remove the pump assembly from the UF-1000 housing.

2.15 STAINLESS STEEL UTILIY CHAIN (UT-15) The Stainless Steel Utility Chain (UT-15) is a 50ft lightweight stainless steel chain with a swivel clip on each end. It is designed to be used with the UT-9 Rope Filter Lift Tool, and the UT-5SP vac head. When used with the UT-9, it provides a means for actuating the Rope Filter Lift Tool from the bridge or pool wall. When used with the UT-5SP it aids the operator in moving the vac head across the pool floor.

2.16 TRI NUCLEAR FILTER CARTRIDGES Tri Nuclear Filter Cartridges are designed for inside to outside flow. This keeps major contamination on the inside of the filter cartridge and reduces contamination exposure to workers during filter change out and transfer. The Polyester filter media has a higher dirt loading capacity than other similar media and results in longer filter runs. It also has a higher resistance to gamma radiation.

CAUTION: At 106 RADS accumulated dose, filter cartridges can start to break down.

Guidelines for filter selection: The 10 micron filter VCPH-10PE is normally chosen for high dirt loading when vacuuming

settled particulate. The 5 micron filter VCPH-5PE will capture material that might bypass the 10 micron during

vacuuming. The 1 micron filter VCPH-1PE is excellent for water clarity issues. The 0.3 micron VCPH-0.3PE filter is used for “polishing” when water clarity is “a must”.

3.0 EQUIPMENT AS SHIPPED This is a general description of how the equipment is normally shipped. The actual may differ depending of customer shipping requirements.

3.1 MAIN EQUIPMENT - The majority of the equipment shipped is in one large shipping crate.

All material is blocked/braced in place to prevent damage during shipping.

3.2 PUMP ASSEMBLY IN WOODEN BOX - A wooden box contains the submersible pump assembly with power cable, control box and flow meter unit (analog flow meter and flow sensor).

3.3 RECEIPT INSPECTION - Carefully inspect the main unit and pump for any shipping

damage. Inspect the pump tube and four (4) filter tubes for foreign material prior to installing the pump assembly. Using the EGL and/or packing list (Equipment Guide List) on Pg 5, verify that all material ordered has been received.

4.0 ASSEMBLY AND INSTALLATION IN POOL 4.1 Pre Start Up 4.1.1 Flow Meter & Sensor Installation

CAUTION: The flow meter dial read-out gauge is a delicate instrument (milliammeter) and should be protected from rough handling. It could be broken if dropped on the floor. Mount it to the UT-10A control panel and hung on a suitable railing for protection.

Remove the FM-1000 flow meter from its box. Verify the analog flow meter has a 0-2000

GPM scale and mount the flow meter to the control panel UT-10A using the two bracket mounting screws located in the FM-1000 flow meter’s box.

4.1.2 Remove the paddlewheel flow sensor from its box. Connect the flow sensor cable to the

back of the FM-1000 meter’s green electrical plug using figure 4.1.2 as a guide.

4.1.3 Mount the CB-PR-1000XP Control Box to the UT-10A Control Panel 4.1.3.1 Remove the control box from its cardboard box. Locate the mounting feet in a bag inside the

control box. The bag is taped to the bottom and/or side of the control box with a tag that it says “Do Not Discard”.

Install the four (4) mounting feet to the back of the control panel.

4.1.3.2 Using a #3 Phillips Screwdriver and a 1/2in open or box end wrench, mount the CB-PR-

1000-4XP control box using the four (4) mounting screws, lock washers & nuts located on the UT-10A control panel) assembly on the UT-10A Control Panel.

4.1.3 Flow Sensor

Before installing the flow sensor to the flow tap mounted on the pump discharge pipe, flip the paddle wheel with a finger to check for dial read-out response. Verify the two o-rings are installed on shaft of the Flow Sensor. The flow sensor may not operate properly without the o-rings installed.

Prior to installing the flow sensor in the pump, lubricate the o-rings with DI water or other approved lubricant Install the probe into the flow sensor tap making sure the slots in the fitting mate properly with the flow meter sensor orientation pins. The paddle wheel will then be perpendicular to the direction of flow.

4.1.4 Pump Power Cable Remove the Sea Con seal plug (P/N: SC-P) from the pump power connector. This plug should be installed whenever the power cable is removed for proper protection The plug provides a waterproof seal; therefore, the pump assembly can be stored underwater with the seal plug installed. Remove the PSC-100P power cable from the pump box. Place a thin coat of non-conductive lubricant (Dow Corning #4) on the outside surface of the female SeaCon connector found at one end of the 100’ cable. When installing and removing the power cord, do not move the power cable connector with side to side motion in an attempt to install or remove it. If difficulty is encountered during installation ensure the keyway is oriented

properly and that the male end of the PSC-100P power cord is properly lubricated with a non conductive electrical lubricant (Dow Corning #4).

If difficulty is encountered during removal ensure the power cable has been unthreaded fully and pull in the vertical direction ONLY to remove the power cable from the pump.

Install the power cord to pump pigtail HAND TIGHT ONLY. DO NOT use any tools (pliers, channel locks etc.) to tighten the connection.

Eliminate the possibility of a bending force on the connector by using the cable ties provided to fasten the pump power cable to the vertical discharge pipe of the pump. (see photograph below)

Connect the other end of the power cable to the pump control box.

4.1.5 Pump Control Box

Remove the control box from its cardboard box & mount it on the UT-10A Mounting Panel using the provided screws on the mounting panel.

Lay-out the 100 ft. of pump power cable and flow meter cable in a straight line. Tie the two cables together with "zip-ties" every 2 feet starting at the pump end.

Approx. 50 zip-ties are in a small

plastic bag in the flow meter box. These “zip-ties” are black in color and are made out of polypropylene. They will float if accidentally dropped in the water.

4.1.6 Discharge Hoses

Couple the two 25 ft. long 4" discharge hoses to the top discharge connectors on top of the pump cover discharge pipe. Connect the two diffuser pipes to the opposite ends of the discharge hoses and tie handling lines to the ends for moving the hoses underwater to desired locations. The diffuser pipes are used to dampen a hose “whip” reaction which would occur on the end of a discharge hose.

NOTE: Running the unit without hoses will not produce desired results in pool

filtration or water clarity.

4.1.7 Hanging Filter Storage Rack Attach the hanging filter

cartridge storage rack to the side railing of the pool or fuel bridge for additional filter storage of clean or spent filter cartridges.

4.2 Assembly of Unit

After the pre-start up checks of section 4.1 have been completed, perform the following steps:

4.2.1 DISCHARGE HOSE

Couple the two 25 ft. long 4” discharge hoses to the top discharge connectors on top of the pump cover discharge pipe. Connect the two diffuser pipes to the opposite ends of the discharge hoses and tie handling lines to them for moving the hoses underwater to desired locations. The diffuser pipes are used to dampen a hose “whip” reaction which would occur on the end of a discharge hose.

NOTE: Running the unit without hoses will not produce desired results in pool

filtration or water clarity. 4.2.2 Lower the UF-1000 Housing into the pool

Attach rigging lines (supplied by customer) to the main unit, and carefully lower the assembly to the bottom of the pool and tie-off the lifting line to the side of the pool.

(The UF-1000 system may be prepositioned in the cavity prior to flood up)

After the UF-1000 housing is in place, the pump may be lowered into the pump tube.

IF the PP-1000SC pump is installed in housing when lowering into the pool, it will set at ~5deg off center. (see photo to right)

4.2.3 Install Pump in UF-1000 housing After the pre start up checks of section 4.1 have been completed, lower the PP-1000SC pump into the housing using the Pump Lift Hook. The UT-14 lift hook is shown lowering the pump into the UF-1000 housing..

CAUTION:

The pump discharge “T” must be in parallel with the lifting plates on the UF-1000 housing. The pump housing has internal guide bars to correctly position the pump cover and prevent the cover

from rotating during operation. If the pump is installed in any other configuration, it will prevent the installation and/or removal of filter cartridges

The pump will ‘self-center’ as it is lowered into the housing. (Note: The pump may be installed in the housing using a standard grapple tool AFTER the

housing has been lowered into the pool)

4.2.4 Install Filter Cartridges

Install eight (8) new filter cartridges into the UF-1000 housing.

Proper Filter Selection is “a must” in order to achieve desired results. See The Filter Cartridge Drawing TNC-019-02 for information on the filters. (Note: Filter Cartridges may be installed AFTER the housing has been lowered into the pool)

Guidelines for filter selection are show below:

The 10 micron filter VCPH-10PE is normally chosen for high dirt loading when vacuuming settled particulate.

The 5 micron filter VCPH-5PE will capture material that might bypass the 10 micron during vacuuming.

The 1 micron filter VCPH-1PE is excellent for water clarity issues. The 0.3 micron VCPH-0.3PE filter is used for “polishing” when water clarity is “a

must”. 4.3 Phase Rotation Check

IMPORTANT - READ THIS STEP CAREFULLY!

Do not run the pump until a proper phase rotation check is made! Running the pump in reverse for any long duration WILL damage the pump!

!!!WARNING!!!

DO NOT RUN/BUMP THE PUMP DRY OR OUT OF THE WATER! SEVERE DAMAGE TO THE PUMP MAY OCCUR!

To check for proper phase rotation of the pump motor, turn on the unit and record the flow rate. Reverse two of the three motor leads to the starter box to reverse the phase, and record again the flow rate. The proper phasing will give the higher flow rate.

4.4 Other Equipment 4.4.1 Underwater Filter Storage Rack

Attach the underwater filter cartridge storage rack to a hand line and lower to the bottom of the pool adjacent to the main unit. This device will be used later for storing depleted filters.

5.0 OPERATION 5.1 Water Clarity Operations

Tie-off the two discharge diffuser ends of the discharge hoses in a location to provide good cross circulation of the water in the pool.

CAUTION:

Operating the unit with no discharge hoses attached minimizes pool cross circulation and will lead to inefficient water filtration that may cause water turbidity problems.

5.2 Filter Change Out Continue system operation until the filters are considered depleted. This should be determined from experience, either by reaching a predetermined maximum dose rate on the filters, or by a decrease in flow rate to approximately 50% of the initial clean filter flow rate.

NOTE: See the attached operating procedure (OI-6) for using the rope filter lift tool.

NOTE: Filter cartridges can take several minutes to flood while trying to submerge

them in the pool. The flooding time can be minimized by pre-soaking the filters

To change out filter cartridges:

Turn off pump. Using the UT-9 Rope Filter Lift Tool, remove and replace the expended filter

cartridges. Start the pump. Read and record initial flow rate.

5.3 Pump Change Out (may be performed remotely underwater)

When it becomes necessary to remove the pump perform the following: Turn off the pump. Using a pump lift hook lift and remove the pump. Install the pump per section 4.2.3

If the pump is to be replaced perform the pre-start up checks of section 4.1 prior to installing the new pump.

6.0 STORAGE REQUIREMENTS 6.1 Caution should be taken to NOT store any plastic components (eg. filters or hoses) near high

radiation fields associated with equipment such as fuel bundles, LPRM’s or control blades. Breakdown of such components can occur with accumulated exposures of 106R. For this reason, precautions should be taken to minimize accumulative dose for the following components: suction hose, power and instrument cable, flow sensor, and electric motor. All components are chemically suitable for long term storage in the fuel pool cavity environment.

6.2 The preferred method of storing the submersible pump assembly when not in use is underwater. Periodically running the pump (at least once a month) is also desirable to prevent seals from remaining in a stagnant condition.

7.0 Precautions and Warnings

WARNING: Do not run/bump the pump dry or out of the water! Severe damage to the pump may occur! WARNING: Install the power cord to pump pigtail HAND TIGHT ONLY. Do NOT use any tools (pliers, channel locks etc.) to tighten the connection.

CAUTION: When installing and removing the power cord, do not move the power cable connector with side to side motion in an attempt to install or remove it.

If difficulty is encountered during installation ensure that the keyway is lined up and that the

male end of the PSC-100P power cord is properly lubricated with a non conductive electrical lubricant (Dow Corning #4).

If difficulty is encountered during removal ensure the power cable has been unthreaded fully and pull in the vertical direction ONLY to remove the power cable from the pump.

CAUTION: Do not start the pump more than once every 2 minutes or 300 starts/day. Damage to the motor winding insulation may occur.

CAUTION: Do not run the pump until a proper phase rotation check is made! Running the pump in reverse for any long duration will damage the pump!

CAUTION:

The pump discharge “T” must in parallel with the lifting plates on the UF-1000 housing. If the pump is installed in any other configuration, it may interfere with the installation and/or removal of filter cartridges

CAUTION: The CB-1000-4XP is rated for 460V/3ph/60Hz ONLY. Any other voltage/frequency supplied to this control box will prevent it from operating properly.

NOTE: Perform the flow meter check before installing the Underwater Filter units into the pool for the first time, whenever the flow meter or sensor is replaced, or anytime the flow sensor is suspected of being damaged.

ROPE FILTER LIFT TOOL

(Model UT-9)

Operating Instructions 1.0 INTORDUCTION

One of the advantages of TRI NUCLEAR Underwater Filter/Vacuum Units is the ability to change-out depleted filter cartridges while the unit is still submerged on the bottom of the pool.

TRI NUCLEAR has designed a special “Rope Filter Lift Tool” Model UT-9, to change out filters underwater. A 50ft stainless steel chain, nylon line, (or equivalent) is attached to the Rope Filter Lift Tool to allow for fast and easy filter change outs.

2.0 DESCRIPTION

The Rope Filter Lift Tool is shown on Dwg. TN-1687. The left view shows one of the two openings in the side of the housing allowing the fingers to extend out to catch under the top cap of the filter cartridge for lifting. The center view describes the key parts of the tool. The right view is a picture of the tool suspended over a filter cartridge, ready to be lowered into the cartridge for remote transferal.

As the top pull rod is operated up or down in the tool housing, the hinged arms rotating on an internal cam will extend either in or out through the two open slots. The hinged arms will capture the filter for lifting, or release it for withdrawal of the tool.

STAINLESS STEEL UTILIY CHAIN (UT-15) The Stainless Steel Utility Chain (UT-15) is a 50ft lightweight stainless steel chain with a swivel clip on each end. It is designed to be used with the UT-9 Rope Filter Lift Tool, and the UT-5SP vac head.

3.0 OPERATION

3.1 To change-out an expended filter cartridge from an Underwater Filter/Vacuum Unit, first lower the Underwater Filter Storage Rack with new filter cartridges down to the bottom of the pool adjacent to the Underwater Filter/Vacuum Unit. Allow the filters to fill with water before lowering quickly into the pool.

3.2 Attach the UT-15, Stainless Steel Utility Chain, a nylon line, or equivalent rope to

the top lifting eye of the Rope Filter Lift Tool, and lower it down until it lands on the top cover of the filter housing.

3.3 Rotate and move the tool until the bottom J-hook engages the lift handle on the

filter housing top cover. Note that the hook locator tab welded on the top of the tool indicates from a top view the orientation of the open side of the hook

3.4 Raise the UT-15, Stainless Steel Utility Chain with tool to open and lay back the

top cover and disengage the tool from the cover.

3.5 Next, lower the tool down into the open top of the expended filter cartridge until

the top plate of the Rope Filter Lift Tool seats on the top of the filter cartridge. This is determined by a sudden decrease in the weight of the tool on the UT-15, Stainless Steel Utility Chain or nylon line.

3.6 Continue to partially lower the UT-15, Stainless Steel Utility Chain or nylon line ONLY another 4 or 5 inches. This will allow the side arms of the tool to extend out through the open slots on the side of the tool housing and engage the underside of the filter top cap.

3.7 Pull up on the tool to raise the filter out of the filter housing, and lower it into one

of the open tubes in the Underwater Filter Storage Rack. 3.8 Slack-off the UT-15, Stainless Steel Utility Chain or nylon line until the rope tool

slide rod hits the bottom and all of the weight of the rope tool is transferred to the filter cartridge. This will rotate the internal cam fitting so the hinged arms will no longer extend out through the side slots in the tool housing.

3.9 Next, raise the UT-15, Stainless Steel Utility Chain or nylon line and lift the rope

tool out of the filter cartridge.

3.10 Lower the rope tool down into a new filter cartridge, and repeat the steps to install a new filter into the housing.

3.11 Finally, re-engage the bottom J-hook of the rope tool onto the lift handle on the

filter housing top cover, lift up to close the filter housing cover, and then disengage the hook. This will complete the filter change-out operation.
