SETTING AND OPERATING THE COMPARATOR To set the thread rollers, the following instrcutions should be followed and reference should be made to Fig.1.

A Remove the roller retaining screws and washers from the ends of the roller pins. Clean the pins.

B Select required rollers, clean them and, making sure that the number on the roller corresponds with the number on the pin, slide the rollers onto the pins. See Fig.2

C Secure them using retaining screws. (Ensure rollers move freely).

Select the appropriate size setting plug. Open the rollers by depressing the hand lever and insert the setting plug. Depression of the hand lever raises the top roller allowing insertion, and when released the setting plug will be in pitch with all three rollers. Ensure the plug has correctly settled in the rollers with a partial twisting motion.

Release the indicator lock screw, turn the bezel of the dial indicator until the needle indicates zero. Lock the bezel.

Set the tolerance pointers in accordance the tolerance allowed on the component. Withdraw the setting plug and the comparator is now ready to use.

NOTE: Left-hand threads can be checked by interchaging the lower two rollers.

The comparator can be easily moved and placed adjacent to the machine.

By slackening the large screw which secures the upper part of the comparator to the base, the upper portion can be swivelled to an angle to suite the operator.

NOTE: Due to the nature of the Thread Rollers on Tri-Roll Comparator Gauges, Setting Plugs & Components are not to be ‘threaded’ or rotated during inspection, as this will produce incorrect results and unnecessary wear of the Thread Rolls.

To inspect for Out of Round (Lobing) or Taper, the arm should first be opened and the component rotated or moved freely, prior to re-engaging the thread roller.

THREAD ROLLER STYLES Full form rollers provide a functional check on errors in pitch, angle, and effective diameter read cumulatively on the dial inducator. Where it is only required to check the effective diameter, rollers having two ribs only are available. The thread form on this type of roller is truncated to a flat on the major diameter and cleared on the minor diameter.

Errors of angle, pitch or interference at the minor diameter can be observed by visual inspection when the work is in the comparator. Minor Diameter inspection rollers can be manufactured if requested.

Wear on the gauging member is reduced to a minimum since the rollers freely revolve when in contact with the work, similiar to Roller Caliper Gauges.

INTRODUCTIONS

Tri-Roll Comparators enable several aspects of thread accuracy to be inspected rapidly and efficiently. Pitch, angle and effective diameter of mass-produced components can be checked for dimensional control within a stated tolerance.

Tri-Roll Comparators enable both right or left hand threads from 2.5mm to 38mm diameter to be inspected. A comprehensive range of frames and thread rollers are available, covering a very wide field of thread forms.
