Jamie Nunn, who played his high school baseball at Mount
Tabor High, has developed into Appalachian’s ace.

Jamie Nunn sub-
scribes to all the old
adages that hard work
pays off. Nunn, a junior
pitcher at Appalachian
State, has seen his stock
rise considerably in the
Southern Conference.
This season the former
Mount Tabor standout has
emerged as one of the
conference’s top pitchers.
He attributes his success
to working hard and hav-
ing faith in his ability.
“Right now we’re
playing well as a team and
personally I doing very
well,” he said, during a
recent telephone inter-
view. Anytime you work
really hard you expect
success to come if you are
patient enough to wait on
it.”
Nunn has
emerged as the
Mountaineers ace, mean-
ing he’s usually the starter
during the team’s Friday
games. It came quickly,
earlier in the season, and
Nunn said he was pre-
pared to accept it.
“At the start of
the season I didn’t know I
would be the Friday
starter,” he said. “It wasn’t
until the (North Carolina)

Lacrosse is a
relatively new sports for
most native North
Carolinians. However,
its popularity has soared
in recent seasons and
kids in the state are
choosing to play the
sport with a pace that
exceeds the growth of
any other.
The Univ. of
North Carolina’s
lacrosse program has
been one of the tops in
the ACC for several
decades. However, the
Tar Heels didn’t sign a
North Carolina athlete
to a scholarship until
three years ago, when
they signed Jordan
Smith, who starred for
four years at Forsyth

hasn’t disappointed
either. The defenseman

defeated Virginia for
the ACC championship.
On the season,
Smith has recorded
seven ground balls and
has been a force for the
Tar Heels' defensive

scored 200. Smith has
been a starter in nine of
the Tar Heels' 12

At the time that
he announced his deci-

Smith became the first
native North Carolinian

the past most of the Tar

Jamie Nunn
to get the team a win.”
Nunn has done a good
job in holding down the ace
slot on the mound for the
Mountaineers. His record is 9-
3 thus far with an Earned Run
Average of 3.12. He has
appeared in 12 games for
Appalachian, starting each
one.
He also leads the team
in most categories, including
innnings pitched (83.2) and
strikeouts (69).
He says he hopes to
keep things going for the
Mountaineers as they
approach the Southern
Conference Tournament and
hopefully lead ASU into the
NCAA Regionals.
“We have talked about
some of those things,” he said.
“Obviously we would like to
win the regular season in the
Southern Conference and it
would definitely help to win
the tournament.
“Right now we’re
more concerned with just win-
ning every game that we play
and I’m trying to do my best
every time Coach gives me the
baseball.”
A junior, Nunn will
have another year of eligibility
left with the Mountaineers. If
he continues to improve he
would likely be looked upon
favorably by major league
baseball teams for their ama-
teur draft next year. But it
could also happen this season.
“You can’t really look
at that kind of stuff and start
speculating,” he said. “You
just have to continue working
as hard as you have in the past
and hope that those kind of
things will fall in place. I have
to focus on getting one player
out at a time and not let any-
thing affect my rhythm.

Peidmont-Triad 4A con-
ference tournament later
on this week and Kaydo
says that their win on
Friday will give them a
big boost of confidence
as they head into the
tournament and play-
offs.
“It definitely
gives us an edge
because we clinched a
share of our conference
title plus we finished
the regular season off
with a win so it defi-
nitely gives us a boost,''
said Mike Muse, Lady
Eagles head coach. who
says that winning last
Friday night will also
help them out seeding
wise for the NCHSAA

will begin next week.
''It will give us
a couple of home games
heading into the state

having a home field
advantage is always a
great thing to have
especially when your in

The Rams finished 3-0 during the
tournament in order to hoist the

WSSU wasted no time get-

runs in the first inning. Chowan went
three up and three down in the top of
the first. The Rams produced three
hits and three runs in the bottom of
the first, including a RBI double
from Tyler Hickernell.
Both teams went scoreless in
the second and third innings. The
Hawks earned a run in the fourth off
a RBI single from Evan Holton. The
hit from Holton scored Brandon
Mack from third base. The inning
came to a close with one run, two
hits, an error, and two left on base.
Unfortunately, that would be the
only run generated by Chowan in the
contest.
Winston-Salem State
responded with two runs in the fifth
and four runs in the sixth to secure a
victory. Neither team scored after the
sixth inning. First baseman Aaron
Jones had clutch day at the plate for
WSSU with four hits off five at-bats,
three runs scored and a RBI.
Hickernell controlled the
game on the mound and picked up
the win. He pitched eight innings
with five strikeouts, only allowing

to being named Tournament MVP.
Seth Mahaffey checked in for the
save in the ninth. He struck out two,
walked one, and had one ground out.
