Lockheed Martin Space has been the prime missile contractor of the Fleet Ballistic Missile (FBM) Program since program inception in 1955 and has continued through six generations of submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBM). The TRIDENT II (D5) missile is presently carried on the U.S. OHIO-class and U.K Vanguard-class ballistic missile submarines (SSBNs). This highly capable missile and launch system ensure that the United States maintains a highly survivable strategic deterrent well into the 21st century. As the most reliable and survivable leg of the nuclear triad, the D5 missile enhances nuclear stability by means of assured retaliation, thus providing no incentive for enemy first strike

The D5 missile has a remarkable mission success record with more than 170 successful flight test launches since 1989, continuing a more than 25-year record of unmatched reliability and performance.

The D5 Life Extension (LE) missile includes five missile avionics electronics packages, the guidance system and continued production of boost motors and post boost control system gas generators. LE missiles are currently in full rate production and undergoing testing.

D5 LE missiles will be deployed on the next-generation U.S. COLUMBIA-class and U.K. Dreadnought-class submarines, both scheduled to enter service in the 2030s.
