Salam Sejahtera!

When Trienekens (Sarawak) was appointed to develop, implement and operate Sarawak’s Integrated Waste Management System (IWMS) 16 years ago, we aspired to not only transform waste management in the State, but to extend beyond standard business requirements by providing excellent service to our customers while also cultivating greater public environmental awareness.

Over the years, our scope-of-services, facilities and workforce has grown in leaps and bounds, and we have seen many developments and changes. Reflecting a little closer, the past year has been equally eventful for all of us at Trienekens. Undeniably, our most significant milestone in 2015 was being awarded a 35-year concession agreement for Trienekens (Samalaju) to implement the State’s second IWMS for Samalaju Industrial Park, Bintulu. Read the full story, and more, in this issue of Madah Kita.

While we work hard in our business operations, we must never neglect our role as a community member. I am proud to say that our team members unreservedly volunteer in our company’s numerous corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities and actively participate in our many Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) programmes. With our collective efforts, I am confident that we can, as a team; consciously contribute towards the well-being of our local communities and environment.

In Trienekens, our people are our key asset and we believe that by attracting and retaining high calibre staff, we can further develop our talent pool and actively promote employee growth. We also believe in open communication, and share both our challenges and successes with all our team members.

As we look ahead and think about what the New Year may bring us, I have no doubt that whatever circumstances or challenges 2016 may bring, we will persevere and triumphant together, as long as we stay united and focus on our priorities – that is to be a strong and sustainable company that places the customer at the heart of everything we do.

Semasa Trienekens (Sarawak) dilantik untuk membangun, melaksana dan mengurus Sistem Pengurusan Sisa Bersepadu (IWMS) di Sarawak 16 tahun yang lalu, hasrat kita bukan sahaja ingin mengubah pengurusan sisa di Negeri ini, tetapi kita juga ingin melangkaui standard tetapan perniagaan dengan membekalkan perkhidmatan yang cemerlang kepada pelanggan kita dan meningkatkan kesedaran alam sekitar di kalangan orang awam. Sejak beberapa tahun ini, skop perkhidmatan, kemudahan-kemudahan dan tenaga kerja kita sudah berkembang pesat dan banyak perubahan dan pembangunan yang kita saksikan bersama. Mengimbas kembali, tahun ini juga merakamkan banyak peristiwa bersejarah di Trienekens yang sudah kita lalui bersama. Pencapaian kita yang paling bermakna dalam tahun 2015 ialah penandatangan perjanjian konsesi melaksanakan IWMS yang kedua di Negeri ini oleh Trienekens (Samalaju) di Taman Perindustrian Samalaju, Bintulu. Perkembangan ini boleh dibaca dengan lanjut, termasuk berita-berita lain, dalam isu Madah Kita terbaru ini. Dalam kita berusaha gigih melaksana operasi perniagaan, kita juga tidak harus mengabaikan peranan kita sebagai anggota masyarakat. Saya bangga menyatakan bahawa anggota pasukan kita bersukarela secara aktif di dalam aktiviti-aktiviti tanggungjawab sosial korporat (CSR) syarikat serta di dalam program-program Kesihatan, Keselamatan dan Alam Sekitar. Melalui usaha kita bersama, saya percaya, sebagai satu pasukan; kita dapat menyumbang kepada kesejahteraan masyarakat setempat dan alam sekitar. Di Trienekens, aset utama kita ialah kakitangan dan kami percaya dengan menarik dan mengekalkan kakitangan-kakitangan berkaliber tinggi, kita dapat membangun bakat-bakat terkumpul dan menggalakkan perkembangan pekerja. As part of the Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy development initiatives, the Samalaju Industrial Park (SIP) in Bintulu was earmarked as a major growth node for heavy and energy-intensive industries. Recognising the importance of having a waste management system of international standards in place to cater to these upcoming industries,theSarawakStateGovernmentcommissioneda detailed feasibility study for the implementation of an Integrated Waste Management System (IWMS) specifically for the area. Concluding from the in-depth study that covered environmental, technical, financial, economic and social factors, a decision was then made to implement the Samalaju IWMS.

Bearing in mind that the ability to develop an effective IWMS requires the expertise of applying environmentally sound technologies, technical proficiency and knowledge of policy frameworks, and considering Trienekens’ proven expertise, experience, track record and commitment in the State; Trienekens (Samalaju) Sdn Bhd was recently awarded a 35 years Concession Agreement to implement theSamalajuIWMSonaDesign,Build,Own,Operateand

Transfer (DBOOT) basis with private funding. The totalinvestment cost is projected at RM900 million, startingwithaFirstPhaseofRM250million.

The new cutting-edge IWMS will include a waste transfer station as well as a waste management centre. Custom-designed to the types of waste that will be generated in the industrial park, the System will ensure holistic management of municipal and hazardous waste for better environmental preservation.

The System will be Sarawak’s second Integrated Waste Management System – the initial IWMS being in operations since 2000 when it was first developed and implemented by Sarawak Wastes Management Sdn Bhd (a joint venture between Trienekens GmbH, Germany and SarawakIncorporated Sdn Bhd), with Trienekens (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd as the System’s operator. The first IWMS integrated the collection, transportation, treatment and disposal of both municipal and hazardous waste and features a state-of-the-art treatment facility located in Kuching.

Department of Environment, Labuan and Trienekens Hosts Scheduled Waste SeminarJabatan Alam Sekitar Labuan dan Trienekens Anjur Seminar Sisa TerjadualAbout70industrymembersfromtheFederalTerritoryofLabuanrecentlyattendedascheduledwastemanagementseminarorganisedbytheDepartmentofEnvironment(DOE)LabuanandTrienekens (Sarawak)SdnBhd.Thehalf-dayseminar aimed at assisting scheduled waste generators – especially those from the oil and gas industry – better understand issues in the management of hazardous waste according to prescribed laws and regulations.

TheeventwasofficiatedbyDOE(Labuan)Director,NorinaFrederick Sambang who later delivered a lecture onscheduled waste management. Her talk was followed by a presentation from Trienekens’ representative, DivisionManager Patricia Susie Nyisong, who highlighted the available disposal avenues available to scheduled waste generators in East Malaysia.

Lebih daripada 70 anggota industri dari Wilayah Persekutuan Labuan menghadiri satu seminar pengurusan sisa terjadual anjuran Jabatan Alam Sekitar (JAS) Labuan dan Trienekens (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd. Seminar separuh hari tersebut bertujuan membantu para penjana sisa – khususnya dari industri minyak dan gas – memahami isu-isu berkaitan pengurusan sisa terjadual mengikut undang-undang dan peraturan yang sudah ditetapkan.

Seminar dirasmikan oleh Pengarah JAS (Labuan), Norina Frederick Sambang. Beliau kemudiannya menerangkan pematuhan Akta Alam Sekitar kepada para hadirin selain menyentuh isu-isu terkini berkaitan pengurusan sisa berbahaya di Malaysia. Pengurus Bahagian Trienekens, Patricia Susie Nyisong pula membentangkan satu taklimat yang menekankan pilihan-pilihan pelupusan yang sedia ada untuk penjana sisa terjadual di Malaysia Timur.

Sebagai salah satu inisiatif pembangunan Koridor Tenaga Diperbaharui Sarawak, Taman Perindustrian Samalaju (SIP) di Bintulu dikenalpasti sebagai satu nod pertumbuhan utama bagi industri-industri berat dan intensif tenaga. Memahami betapa pentingnya kewujudan sistem pengurusan sisa bertaraf antarabangsa dalam menampung keperluan-keperluan industri-industri baru nanti, Kerajaan Negeri Sarawak mengarahkan satu kajian kebolehlaksanaan terperinci dijalankan untuk melaksana Sistem Pengurusan Sisa Bersepadu (IWMS) di kawasan tersebut. Hasil kajian merangkumi faktor-faktor alam sekitar, teknikal, kewangan dan sosial akhirnya membawa kepada keputusan melaksana IWMS Samalaju. Menyedari hakikat bahawa keupayaan membangun Sistem Pengurusan Sisa Bersepadu yang efektif memerlukan kepakaran tinggi beraplikasikan teknologi-teknologi alam sekitar, kecekapan teknikal dan pengetahuan merangka polisi yang kukuh serta berdasarkan kepakaran, pengalaman, prestasi dan komitmen Trienekens sebelum ini sudah terbukti di Sarawak; Trienekens (Samalaju) Sdn Bhd dianugerahkan Perjanjian Konsesi melaksana IWMS di Taman Industri Samalaju selama 35 tahun mengikut

dasar Mereka, Membina, Memiliki, Mengendali dan Memindahkan (DBOOT) melalui pembiayaan swasta. Jumlah keseluruhan kos pelaburan dijangka bernilai RM900 juta di mana Fasa Pertama bernilai RM250 juta. Sistem Pengurusan Sisa Bersepadu terbaru ini akan dilengkapkan dengan sebuah Stesen Pemindahan Sisa di Samalaju termasuk sebuah Pusat Pengurusan Sisa di Maskat, 44 km dari Taman Perindustrian Samalaju. Direka khas mengurus kepelbagaian sisa yang akan dihasilkan di SIP, IWMS ini akan memastikan pengurusan holistik kedua-dua sisa perbandaran dan berbahaya bagi menjaga dan memelihara alam sekitar. Sistem tersebut bakal menjadi Sistem Pengurusan Sisa Bersepadu yang kedua di Sarawak selepas sistem yang pertama dibangunkan pada tahun 2000 oleh Sarawak Wastes Management Sdn Bhd (satu usahasama di antara Trienekens GmbH, Jerman dan Sarawak Incorporated Sdn Bhd) dan Trienekens (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd sebagai operator Sistem. IWMS yang pertama menyepadukan proses kutipan, pengangkutan, rawatan dan pelupusan kedua-dua sisa perbandaran dan berbahaya; dan ia juga menggunakan sebuah tapak kemudahan berteknologi tinggi di Kuching.

Trienekens Teams Up To SafetyTrienekens Bersatu Tingkatkan Keselamatan

Employees of Trienekens (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd recently celebrated the company’s annual Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) Week, themed this year as “Team Up To Safety”. The event aimed to promote teamwork and further highlighted the importance of continuously maintaining a strong Safety culture at work in order to preserve a workplace free from injuries and incidents. The week-long celebration culminated with a special HSE Dayeventatthecompany’sKuchingandBintulubranches.

Trienekens’ProjectsGeneralManager,AliceLeeofficiatedthe event in Kuching and later presented special HSE awards to Trienekens’ outstanding groups and individuals for their past year’s HSE performance.

While the awards for “Outstanding Safe Team Performance (Municipal Waste)” were presented to Kipli bin Bujang and his team members Johari bin Hop and Hamka bin Suud; Mannen Collin and his team members Tonik bin Jali and SebliDisut;aswellasSamuelSuwerandhisteammembersEdi bin Sa’ee and Kempus Kawong; Halmai bin Ogik was the proud recipient of the “Outstanding Safe Driving (RoRo)Performance” award. In Bintulu, the individual award for “Outstanding HSE Performance” went to Wilbert Enteri Beliang.

From the Kuching Integrated Waste Management Park,Tay Pricie Bertha Batter and Matthew Boniface Rigod both received the “Outstanding Safe Performance in Non-Scheduled Waste Operations” awards, while Kirk Rikom and Rupert Alew were presented with the “Outstanding Safe Performance in Scheduled Waste Operations” awards.

Baru-baru ini kakitangan Trienekens telah menyambut Minggu Kesihatan, Keselamatan dan Alam Sekitar (HSE) bertemakan “Pasukan Bersatu, Keselamatan Padu”. Acara tersebut bukan sahaja menekankan kepentingan usaha berpasukan tetapi juga kepentingan mengamal budaya kerja selamat agar tempat kerja bebas dari risiko kecederaan dan kejadian. Sambutan tersebut berlangsung selama seminggu dan ia diakhiri dengan satu majlis penutupan Hari HSE bertempat di pejabat syarikat di Kuching dan Bintulu.

Sambutan di Kuching dirasmikan oleh Pengurus Besar Projek, Alice Lee dan beliau juga menyampaikan beberapa anugerah khas HSE kepada beberapa kumpulan pekerja dan individu di atas prestasi cemerlang HSE mereka sepanjang tahun lepas.

Anugerah “Prestasi Keselamatan Berpasukan Cemerlang (Sisa Munisipal)” disampaikan kepada pasukan Kipli bin Bujang bersama anggotanya, Johari bin Hop dan Hamka bin Suud; pasukan Mannen Collin dan anggota pasukannya, Tonik bin Jali dan Sebli Disut; serta pasukan Samuel Suwer dan anggota pasukannya Edi bin Sa’ee dan Kempus Kawong. Halmai bin Ogik pula menerima anugerah “Prestasi Pemanduan Selamat Cemerlang (RoRo)”. Di Bintulu pula, anugerah “Prestasi HSE Cemerlang” dimenangi oleh Wilbert Enteri Beliang.

Dari Kuching Integrated Waste Management Park (KIWMP); anugerah “Prestasi Keselamatan Operasi Sisa Bukan Terjadual Cemerlang” dimenangi oleh Tay Pricie Bertha Batter dan Matthew Boniface Rigod sementara anugerah “Prestasi Keselamatan Operasi Sisa Terjadual Cemerlang” diterima oleh Kirk Rikom dan Rupert Alew.

Mira Jambau, Awang Yahya bin Awang Johari dan Kennedy Manju menerima anugerah penghargaan di atas pencapaian “0 Kesalahan Memandu Laju” sepanjang tahun 2014/2015, sementara anugerah “Prestasi Keselamatan Cemerlang (Pemanduan Jarak Jauh)” pula disampaikan kepada Danny Goan, Roger Lunggan dan Jensonray Sepia.

Dua anugerah prestasi HSE tertinggi syarikat iaitu “Pencapaian Bebas Hilang Masa Akibat Kecederaan (LTI)” dan “Prestasi HSE Terbaik Keseluruhan” masing – masing dimenangi oleh Bahagian Logistik & Perkhidmatan Kuching, dan Jabatan Penyelenggaraan Logistik Kuching. Kedua – dua anugerah tersebut disampaikan oleh Pengurus Besar Projek, Alice Lee.

Trienekens (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd actively works together with public authorities and clients, as well as fellow industry and trade members in supporting the development of environmental education, green technology and improved waste management systems and services. A special defensive driving training for heavy vehicles was recently organised over two separate sessions for more than 15 members of Trienekens’ scheduled waste operations team. The full-day course was conducted by road safety specialist SIPCO Sdn Bhd; a consultant company that focuses on practical and proven solutions to help organisations realise their aim of zero road traffic incidents. The syllabus, which included both classroom and on-the-road evaluations specifically for heavy vehicles covered driving risk management, active defensive driving techniques, driving in critical and emergency situations, as well as vehicle inspection.

More than 15 selected staff from the Kuching Integrated Waste Management Park (KIWMP) authorised to enter confined spaces within the facility recently underwent a refresher safety course as part of the company’s Confined Space Entry programme. Modules included the various regulations of confined space entry; identification of hazards within a confined space; Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and other equipment used for entering confined spaces; as well as the correct procedures for entering confined spaces. The full-day course was conducted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH).

Lebih daripada 15 kakitangan terpilih Kuching Integrated Waste Management Park (KIWMP) yang berkebenaran untuk memasuki ruang-ruang terhad di kawasan kemudahan baru-baru ini menjalani satu kursus ulang kaji sebagai sebahagian daripada program Kemasukan Ruang Terhad syarikat. Trienekens (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives and sustainability efforts are an integral part in achieving the company’s objective of being a catalyst for positive change. Many activities under Trienekens’ annual calendar of events are Health, Safety and Environment (HSE)-motivated, and focus on community development, public awareness, education and employee welfare.

Inisiatif-inisiatif tanggungjawab sosial korporat (CSR) Trienekens (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd dan usaha-usaha kelestarian adalah sebahagian daripada objektif syarikat memangkin perubahan positif. Kebanyakan aktiviti kalendar tahunan Trienekens berunsur HSE dan fokus kepada pembangunan masyarakat, kesedaran awam, pendidikan dan kebajikan pekerja.

The company recently hosted a “gotong – royong” (work party) for SK St. Anthony primary school in Bintulu. The half-day event saw volunteers from Trienekens Bintulu Branch work towards beautifying the school with the company also funding materials needed for the event. The programme involved general cleaning and repair works, including replacing worn out partition wood walls and repainting the school’s main block. More Schools Go Green with Trienekens’ 5R ProgrammeSekolah Hijau Sertai Program 5R Trienekens Meningkat

Menyentuh isu pemuliharaan alam sekitar, Trienekens (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd percaya bahawa pendidikan alam sekitar adalah perkara penting untuk melangkah ke arah memupuk rasa prihatan di kalangan para belia memelihara alam sekitar demi generasi akan datang.

Syarikat memulakan dan melaksanakan satu projek khas pengasingan sisa pepejal di beberapa sekolah terpilih di Kuching. Ia memperkenalkan konsep 5R (Kurangkan, Guna Semula, Kitar Semula, Fikir Semula dan Perbaiki) kepada peserta program. Program tersebut juga memupuk tabiat mengasing sisa bermula dari sumber di kalangan para pelajar dan staf.

Aktiviti-aktiviti sampingan seperti seminar, bengkel dan pertandingan-pertandingan juga dijalankan bersama rakan-rakan projek bagi memupuk amalan prinsip 5R serta mengisi kalendar acara berpendidikan alam sekitar sepanjang tahun.

Pengurus Besar Pembangunan Pembangunan Trienekens, Elvin Wee berterima kasih dengan sekolah-sekolah terlibat dan komiti projek di atas dedikasi mereka, sambil berkata, “Projek jangka panjang ini memerlukan komitmen yang kuat dari kedua-dua pihak, terutama dengan aliran pelajar baru dan pelajar yang bakal menamatkan persekolahan mereka. Oleh itu, kami amat berbesar hati menjalin kerjasama dengan sekolah yang benar-benar berminat dalam meningkatkan kesedaran alam sekitar. Kami ingin memainkan peranan yang aktif dalam mendidik generasi muda dan harapan kami adalah kitar semula akan suatu hari nanti menjadi sebahagian daripada kurikulum pendidikan nasional, dan dapat membentuk generasi yang prihatin dan bertanggungjawab ke atas alam sekitar.”

Where ecological conservation is concerned, Trienekens (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd believes that environmental education is an integral step to creating a deeper sense-of-care in today’s youth towards preserving the environment for future generations.

The company initiated and runs a special solid waste segregation project for selected schools in Kuching, introducing the 5Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Rethink and Repair) concept to the programme’s participants. Additionally, the programme aims to inculcate habitual sorting of solid waste at source by engaging both students and staff to practice segregating their school waste from the point-of-generation.

Meaningful and creative activities further encourages hands-on practice of the ‘5 R’ principles as the programme includes a year-long calendar of environmental educational events ranging from seminars, workshops and contests for all active programme partners.

Trienekens’ GeneralManager for BusinessDevelopment,Elvin Wee thanked the participating schools and project committee for their dedication, adding “This long-term project takes real commitment from both parties, especially with the unavoidable flow of new and graduating students. Pioneer participant of Trienekens’ recycling programme, SK Matang Jaya took another significant step forward with their recent“RecyclingAwarenessDay”event.Jointlyorganisedby Trienekens and Padawan Municipal Council (MPP), the event also marked the school’s fourth year in the solid waste segregation education programme.
