Starphire® Ultra-Clear Glass

1-888-PPG-IDEA (1-888-774-4332) www.ppgideascapes.com 3

With its unique blue-edge and superior clarity, Starphire®

glass represents the ultimate achievement in ultra-clearglass technology.

Extra-Heavy Starphire® GlassUnlike conventional clear glass, which becomesprogressively greener as it is laminated into multiplelayers or specified in increasing thicknesses, Starphireglass maintains its ultra-clear aesthetic and color fidelity.Architects can now take advantage of this uniquecharacteristic and exceptionally high visible lighttransmittance by specifying Starphire Extra-Heavy glass inthicknesses of 16 (5/8") and 19 (3/4") millimeters forvision, security or spider glass and other specialty ordecorative applications.

Solarban® 60 glass is also available as a second-surfacecoating on selected tinted glasses, as well as on Starphireultra-clear glass for ultimate transparency.

Solarban® 70XL Solar Control Low-E Glass

NEW!Solarban ® 70XL glass is a technological breakthrough inSolar Control Low-E glass that creates the industry’s bestcombination of visible light transmittance and solar control, together in a clear, color-neutral aesthetic.

With a Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) of 0.27 and VisibleLight Transmittance (VLT) of 64% in a one-inch insulatingglass unit, Solarban 70XL glass produces a Light to SolarGain (LSG) ratio of 2.37, which exceeds other Solar ControlLow-E glasses on the market.

For optimum performance in a tinted glass appearance,Solarban 70XL glass can be used in the #2 orientationwith a select number of PPG tints. (See performance dataon pages 10 & 11.) Solarban 70XL glass can also be usedin the #3 orientation with all outboard tinted glassesfrom PPG, including tints from the Oceans of Color ®

collection of ocean-inspired glasses or PPG Earth & Skyperformance glasses.

Reduced Equipment Costs. Long Term Energy Savings. An independent energy and environmental research firm used288 energy simulations for two common building types inclimates across North America to compare the energyperformance of Solarban 70XL glass to other commonlyspecified architectural glasses.

The testing revealed that, depending on the size, type andclimate of a prospective building, Solarban 70XL glass hasthe potential to save architects and building owners hundredsof thousands of dollars in upfront capital cooling equipmentcosts when it is specified instead of competing products.Solarban 70XL glass also can produce annual energy savingsof up to 13%.

Finally, and perhaps most importantly for environmentally-focused architects, the study also showed that specifyingSolarban 70XL glass for a typical commercial building canreduce CO2 emissions by thousands of tons over its lifetime.

Sungate® 500 Low-E GlassWith more than 200 million square feet shipped in the lastdecade, Sungate 500 Low-E glass is one of the industry’smost trusted and proven products. Thanks to the increasedemphasis on energy efficiency, the value of this proventechnology continues to multiply.

In certain geographic areas, the ability of Sungate 500Low-E glass to transmit the warming rays of the sun (asmeasured by its higher Solar Heat Gain Coefficient) canlower heating requirements.

Performance

Sungate 500 glass has the color neutrality of a clear uncoatedglass, together with outstanding energy performance. Whenused in a one-inch insulating glass unit, Sungate 500 coatedglass produces winter nighttime U-value improvements of27% compared to a standard clear glass insulating unit, while transmitting as much as 74% of its visible light.

Versatility

When added solar control is required, Sungate 500 glasscan be teamed with a spectrally selective tint from theOceans of Color® collection in a one-inch insulating glass unit. This produces the benefits of high visible light transmittance, improved solar control and a variety of aesthetic options.

For example, Sungate 500 Azuria™ glass delivers a Lightto Solar Gain (LSG) ratio of 1.66, well above the minimumstandard for spectrally selective glass* as defined by theU.S. Department of Energy.

(For performance data on other Sungate 500/Oceans of Color® combinations, see pages 10-11.)

* The U.S. Department of Energy defines spectrally selective glass as glass with a Lightto Solar Gain ratio of 1.25 or higher.

Understanding Coated Glass Surface OptionsSolarban® Solar Control Low-E and Sungate® 500 Low-E coatings must beglazed within the insulating glass airspace, on either the #2 or #3 surface. When combined with a tinted glass, these coatings are typically glazed inthe #3 surface orientation.

Solarcool ® reflective coated glasses are glazed either in the #1 or #2orientation depending on the desired exterior aesthetic. The Vistacool™coating is only available in the #2 position.

† Solarban 70XL for annealed applications is applied to Starphire glass; heat treatedapplications will require either clear or Starphire glass depending onmanufacturing process.

†† Optiblue is a unique substrate by PPG designed specifically for Solarban z50 glass. It can alsobe used for spandrel glass and as an interior lite for Solarban 80 glass.

1. Performance data is based on representative samples of factory production. Actual values may varydue to the production process and manufacturing tolerances. All tabulated data is based on NFRCmethodology using the LBNL Window 5.2 software. Variations from previously published data are dueto minor changes in the LBNL Window 5.2 software versus Version 4.1.

2. Transmittance and Reflectance values are based on spectrophotometric measurements andenergy distribution of solar radiation.

3. U-Value is the overall coefficient of heat transmittance or heat flow measured inBTU/hr. • ft2 • °F. Lower U-values indicate better insulating performance.

4. European U-Value is the overall coefficient of heat transmittance or heat flow measured inWatts/m2•°C, and is calculated using WinDat WIS version 3.0.1 software.

5. Shading Coefficient is the ratio of the total amount of solar energy that passes through a glassrelative to 1/8-inch (3.0mm) thick clear glass under the same design conditions. It includesboth solar energy transmitted directly plus any absorbed solar energy re-radiated andconvected. Lower shading coefficient values indicate better performance in reducing solarheat gain. Note: Performance values were calculated using the LBNL Window 5.2 programusing NFRC 100-2001 standard winter and summer design condition.

6. Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) represents the solar heat gain through the glass relative tothe incident solar radiation. It is equal to 86% of the shading coefficient.

7. Light to Solar Gain (LSG) ratio is the ratio of visible light transmittance to solar heat gaincoefficient.
