The issue of ecological transition will also central in discussions throughout the quarter. There will be a study day on ecological accounting (12 February), and an international colloquium on the thinking of Karl Polanyi which aims to foster dialogue between thinkers and actors working in environmental transition and those in the social economy (19-21 March).

The final thread of this programme, the issue of migration, will begin with the fourth Salon of Exile and Migra-tion Literatures (LittExil) in part-nership with the Palais de la Porte Dorée (15 February). It will continue with the participatory art exhibition “Human Mobility” by the Mexican artist Cristian Pineda (from 2 March), and a second day of reflection and debate on the notion of the migration crisis (18 March).

The FMSH wishes you an excellent year in 2020, rich in knowledge and intellectual nourishment.

Laëtitia Atlani-Duault,FMSH Scientific Director

As this year begins, the Research Cluster continues its many activi-ties under the guiding principle of supporting innovative research that is open to society and meets the major challenges of our time. Among the many public events organized this trimester, four main themes take centre stage: racism and antisemi-tism; digital technology; ecological transition, and migration. Officially inaugurated last March, the Interna-tional Platform on Racism and Anti-semitism begins its work with the launch of its research seminar Racism and antisemitism: global, national and local perspectives.

At the same time, the Cluster is continuing to consolidate its multiple activities around “digital humanities” issues, which will now be structured within a Society(IES) and Digital Technology(IES) Research Platform. An official presentation of this new international platform will be held on March 5, paving the way for the pursuit of large-scale projects on these crucial issues in the social sciences and humanities.

The signs of luxury

This day-long seminar provides a comparative reflection on the systems of signs that characterize luxury, and on the strategies deployed by actors within the sector. The speakers will focus on contemporary signs of luxury, emphasizing the importance given to the affirmation of singularity that exalts the category of exclusiveness. The new language of luxury, in which ethics is a central theme, will also provide an angle for analysis.

From the great transfor-mation to the eco-social transition

The challenge of the early XXI century is to formulate a new conception of transformation paving the way towards a society based on solidarity and epistemological justice. Bringing different fields of research the purpose of the 4th EMES-Polanyi International Seminar is to break through disciplinary boundaries and consider multiple epistemo-logical perspectives on how economies are and can be (re-)embedded in their societal and political context, and to critically deliberate societal uncertainties that cast a shadow over democracies as well as emerging practices aimed at strengthening them.

The international Society(IES) and Digital Technology(IES) Plat-form will study emerging digital technologies (artificial intelli-gence and big data, blockchain, Internet of Things, cross-media, etc.) and the challenges of digital transformation in society. This will be done through national and international research, case studies, multi-stakeholder meet-ings, and theoretical and tech-nical seminars. An additional objective is to unite citizens and raise awareness of the digital challenges they face.

The platform will bring together digital initiatives with high soci-etal added value by connecting various projects and achieve-ments of international partners: academics and researchers; companies and experts; civil society actors; digital authors and artists. Its projects and activ-ities will be grouped around four axes: emerging media, societal issues and new subjectivities; e-mediation of access to knowl-edge; sustainable development of territories and citizenship; imagination and digital creation.

This seminar intends to approach racism and anti-Semitism as a global, national and local phenomena, resulting from numerous metamorphoses and historical evolutions. The old forms of racism have not disap-peared, but they are now in insti-tutional and systemic mode, and in so-called “cultural” or “differ-entialist” form. Hatred and rejection of the other are now to be found on social networks (conspiracy theories, often anti-

Semitic) and in algorithms. At a time of increase in identity-based movements and competi-tion amongst victims, racist and anti-Semitic prejudice is even developing in some minorities or in groups defending minorities.

The capitalist organisation of human life and especially competition has progressively imposed a spiral of accu-mulation and acceleration which now threatens the survival of the species, ecologically, socially and psycho-logically. Based on this observation, established during the previous session of the Accumulation and Accelera-tion seminar, how can we escape global acceleration and artificialisation [urbanization? Industrialization?] of life?

While national accounting has been the subject of much debate, corporate accounting has also come under scrutiny in recent times. Alternative accounting methods have been proposed, including by accounting experts, and some have been discussed within the FAIR network as part of this event. Such methods aim to account more accurately for the environment and for work, by valuating and/or amortising them. During this study day, proposals for the overhaul of corporate accounting will be explored.

“Migration crisis”? What crisis? II

This workshop aims at examining the notion of “crisis” within the field of migration through an interdisciplinary dialogue. Through a common etymology, “crisis” and “criticism” share a same semantical value, that of an opportunity offered to new understandings and changes. In contrast, the current discursive use of “crisis” seems to stress historical ineluctability and political inflexibility. How to explain this reversal?

This study day extends the reflection of a first day which took place in October 2019. It is organized by A. Nuselovici (NOUSS) and N. Sahraoui.

Human Mobility is a retrospec-tive of the work of Mexican visual artist Cristian Pineda. Since 2006, the artist has been working around the subject of migration, which is why he has been travelling to the Mexican, American and European borders ever since. These borders are the testimony of a geographic, political, social, economic and cultural fracture, but what intrigues the artist the most is the roll of the human being in this both globalized and frac-

tured world.

The FMSH will host a selection of Cristian Pineda’s projects throughout the month of March. The exhibition will be accompa-nied by a series of conferences and workshops on the themes of migration.

Exile and Migration LiteratureFair

From the Ulysses of Homer to that of Joyce, the history of literature never ceases to tell the story of exile. To be safe and exist, today’s migrants must also produce stories.

The LittExil fair welcomes inde-pendent authors, magazines and publishers for a day devoted to the theme of exile in contempo-rary literature.

Chair Exil et migrations, Alexis Nuselovici (NOUSS)

This year, the show is part of the project “Inscriptions en rela-tion: colonial traces with plural expressions” led by the Civic City association.

The Fondation Maison des sciences de l’homme (FMSH) is a institution that supports the development, influence and appeal of humanities and social sciences at a national and inter-national scale. It creates excel-lent conditions for research and interdisciplinary dialogue, for nurturing scientific networks, and for cultivating fruitful encounters between the public and private sectors. Recognized as a public interest institution, the FMSH contributes to the renewal of research by developing its actions and services according to four

priorities: cutting-edge research, international collaborations, inno-vative dissemination of knowledge and digital infrastructures.

This programme presents the events organized by the FMSH Research cluster. Structured around the Collège d’études mondiales, scientific platforms, chairs, innovative programmes and partnership projects, the Research cluster supports proj-ects, studies and networks that take an interdisciplinary overview approach to major presentday challenges.
