    About Today's Hymn...

Lead Me, Guide Me, inspired by Psalm 5:8,was wrien in 1953, by Doris Mae Akers(1923-1995). The hymn reflects an earnestplea for an inmate walk with God,asking God to lead, guide, and protect

the believer. The deeply personal stanzasemphasize that due to our lack of strength, our blindness, and temptaons, divineguidance is essenal in our Chrisan walk.

Akers had an acve career as a giedsinger, choir director, and songwriter. Shewrote her first song at age ten. Since that

me, she has composed more than 300gospel songs and hymns which appearin the hymnals of many denominaonsand have been sung by the Body of Christaround the world, most of which werepublished by Manna Music (includingThere's a Sweet, Sweet Spirit in thisPlace," You Cant Beat God Giving, and

He Delivered Me.) In 2001, she wasposthumously inducted into the GospelMusic Hall of Fame.

    1

The LORD is my shepherd, I lack nothing.2He makes me lie down in green pastures, he

leads me beside quiet waters, 3he refreshes

my soul. He guides me along the right paths

for his names sake. 4Even though I walk

through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff,

they comfort me. 5You prepare a table be-

    A Word From The Pastor

Asour country remembers the dream of

Dr. Marn Luther King, Jr., new research

    conducted for the Childrens Defense

Fund has found the vast majority of Americas Black

community, seven in 10 adults, view these as toughor very bad mes for Black children and many see

poor Black youths falling further behind. When 40

percent of Black children are born poor, 85 percent

of Black children cannot read or do math at grade

level in fourth grade and later almost half drop out

of school, and a Black boy born in 2001 has a one

in three chance of going to prison someme inhis lifeme, we know we are facing a crisis. So an

intergeneraonal group of Black leaders have just

commied to a renewed movement to reweave the

fabric of family and community for Black children

and to provide a stronger voice for children in their

    states and naonally.

We met in December for three days at theChildrens Defense Fund-Haley Farm near Knoxville,

TN to address what many of us believe is the worst

crisis faced by millions of Black children since slavery.

The meeng had three purposes: (1) to wake up the

Black community and the naon to the ominous

clouds encircling Black children and youths whose

life chances are less posive than their parentsand White peers; (2) to commit to replacing the

Cradle to Prison Pipeline with a pipeline to college,

producve work, and successful adulthood for all

Black children; and (3) to launch the second phase of

the Black Community Crusade for Children (BCCC) on

the 20th anniversary of the launch of the first Black

Community Crusade for Children to Leave No Child

    Behind.

In December 1990, CDF co-convened with Dr.

John Hope Franklin and Dr. Dorothy Height, and 22

Black leaders for five days at the beauful Rockefeller

Foundaon Conference Center in Bellagio, Italy to

discuss the condion of the Black child and family. We concluded that the Black child and family were

in a crisis and that we had to take acon. Efforts

quietly catalyzed by BCCC include the CDF Freedom

Schools program, which has served over 90,000

K-12 children and trained 9,000 college mentor

leaders to serve them, and the Harlem Childrens

Zone, whose President and CEO, Geoff Canada, nowchairs CDFs Board and is a co-convener of BCCC along

with PolicyLink Founder and CEO and CDF Board Vice

Chair Angela Blackwell. A range of intergeneraonal

    youth leadership development programs have

touched about 20,000 promising high school and

college students and young adult leaders.

BCCC will highlight and build on these and other

best pracces and successes in a number of areas

crucial to healthy child and youth development and

move them to scale and into policy. Since the linchpins

of success are leadership and educaon of the next

generaon, our goals include doubling summer

Freedom Schools over the next five years; training

5,000 next generaon servant-leaders of color atleast half Black males to carry on the struggle for

a fair playing field for all children; encouraging more

young servant leaders in Freedom Schools and other

youth leadership training programs, especially Black

and Lano males, to become teachers to fill as many

as possible of the expected one million teacher

openings over the next four to six years (only 2%

of public school teachers are Black males); helping

to catalyze and mount an irresisble and sustained

    intergeneraonal movement to dismantle the

Cradle to Prison Pipeline; and effecve community

organizing to tackle the pervasive poverty, racial

    disparies, miseducaon, and joblessness plaguing

    Black children and youths.

Today, the toxic cocktail of poverty, illiteracy,

racial disparies, violence, and massive incarceraon

is sentencing millions of children to dead end, powerless, and hopeless lives and threatens to

undermine the past half century of racial and social

progress. This is the moment to act with urgency,

vision, and courage to combat the growing racial

and class segregaon in America; to close the

achievement gap; to reweave the fabric of family

and community; and to build a loud and effecveadult voice for children. Building a powerful

intergeneraonal movement is crucial to protecng

children and transforming our naons addicon to

punishment and incarceraon as a first rather than

last resort. We must establish beer child investment

policies and stronger, more skilled and innovave

    advocates, community networks, and instuons

to implement them. We must increase community

capacity, sustainability of pracces and programs

that work, and create as many effecve new servant

leader voices for more just naonal choices as

possible. There is not a moment or child to waste.

We know what to do to provide all children a

healthier, fairer, and safer start in life and the chanceto reach successful adulthood. What is missing is a

crical mass of caring adults thinking and acng out of

the box and raising an effecve and persistent ruckus

to counter the forces of status quo and regression.

The 140 leaders who gathered in December at

CDF-Haley Farm to launch the BCCCs second

phase represented many different disciplines, skills, and gis and the extraordinary power within our

community to make the impossible possible when

necessary. This is the beginning call to sustained

acon to do whatever is needed for as long as it takes

to save the futures of millions of Black children. This

is no one, two, or five year effort. Nobody is going

to care more about our children than we do and the

reality of Black child life today should shame and

cause all of us to move into emergency acon inside

and outside of the Black community. Visit the BCCC

Website to learn more and to join us.

Debang Gun Control and Mental HealthBy Bentley de Bardelaben

The current debate about Second Amendment rights,

gun The current debate about Second Amendment

rights, gun control law, and the ability to properly

diagnose mental health has srred public opinion insuch a way that people are now talking about possible

changes. The tragedies that occurred at a shopping plaza

in Arizona, on a military base in Texas and on college

campus in Virginia have a common link-access to guns

by the mentally unstable. Many have heard the saying,

guns dont kill people; people kill people. While I am

not looking to argue, mental illness is a subject worthy of

    discussion.

It has been a while since Ive been hunng, but I

admit it is an excing sport. The rule I hunt by is kill

(or catch if I would be fishing) only what I expect to clean

and eat. Further, Ive never been a proponent of using

automac or semi-automac weaponry. Its about the

thrill of the hunt and the skill of the hunter, not about

    slaughtering the animal.

Obviously, I support the Second Amendment right to

bear arms. But having a gun to protect myself and family

against a home invasion is a very different issue. Along

with the privilege of owning guns one must familiarize

ones household with rules of gun ownership, especially

when children are young. The tragic shoongs in Tucson

have reopened this discussion. The issue in this case is

the mental state of the gun owner. In fact, some people

support the adding of a mental health component to the

applicaon for acquiring a gun license.

Prior to my becoming an ordained minister, I had

to pass a rigorous mental health test. It was mentally

exhausng to say the least. The quesons went overand over the same things. But the point of repeon of

quesons was the consistency of my answers. Fortunately,

I passed. This was good news for me and the parishioners

whose souls I had been charged to care for. A mental health

examinaon is required for women and men in ministry;however to procure a gun license, we overlook a persons

mental health status. Isnt the safety of American cizens

as important as where we spend eternity? Comparably,

these topics are apples and oranges. Nevertheless, they

    are equally important.

Some are asking that we become less vitriolic and

more mindful with our speech. There is an earnestaempt to bring a civil and respecul tone into our

naonal polical debate. But civility does not address

mental illness. In my experience, concerns about people

who are paranoid schizophrenic and hearing voices in their

minds have lile connecon with the ability to debate

civilly. True, it cannot hurt us to be civil. But we must not

lose this opportunity before us to regulate gun ownership

for the mentally ill. The precious life of Chrisna Taylor

Green and the rest of our naons children demand that

    we take acon.

It is a wise naon that learns from lessons of its

past that is desned not to repeat them. Let us be the

great republic we are and make necessary changes to our

gun laws for the safety of all. For such a me as this, we

    cannot afford to fail.

Special Note: Our hearelt condolences to the families

of Judge John Roll, Gabe Zimmerman, Dorwin Stoddard,

Dorothy Murray, Phyllis Scheck, and Chrisna Taylor Green.

Our thoughts and prayers for the recovery of those injured

including Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords. In addion,

we pray for the parents of Jared Lee Loughner, who arealso wounded by this terrible tragedy.

THE RESULTS OF A REDEEMED LIFE

    T

he words, New Beginnings, always inspire me to look for something new in my life. It

really does not maer what that new something turns out to be; I know I like new projects,

new ways to accomplish old exisng projects, perhaps, meeng new people who help me

to see from a different perspecve.

Below is a conversaon between two Deacons that may renew your thinking on giving to God.

Deacon Phil had a serious queson for Deacon Sam. When you say that I should give to God first,

does that mean I should give to the church before I pay my installment? Deacon Sam responded,

Deacon Phil, the way I see it is that the money we give to God should be ours to give.

Its my money alright, I worked hard to get it, protested Deacon Phil. Lets agree that you

worked hard to get it, but when you menoned installment, that says you spent some of your

money before you earned it, replied Deacon Sam. Yes, thats true, I promised to pay a small

installment, Deacon Phil agreed. Okay, then each month that installment belongs to your

creditor; its not yours to give. Your gi to the church must come from your remaining income,

    concluded Deacon Sam.

Hey, thats not good; that way, the church always gets leovers, argued Deacon Phil. No! You

and I must manage our money so we can give to God first, from money which is ours to give.

We must manage the normal events of our lives, because we are all subject to abnormal events

beyond our control, Deacon Sam advised. Youre saying that I should manage well enough to pay

both God and the devil? summarized Deacon Phil.

Deacon Sam pointed out, Yes! When you do that, you can control who gets money first!

WE GOT NEXT: Celebrang the joys and sacrifices of the past and securing the future ofour Nextgeneraon to take our community to the Nextlevel.

    Levicus 25:1 - 13 (NIV), Luke 4:18 - 19 (KJV)

January Levicus: 25:1010Consecrate the fiieth year and proclaim

liberty throughout the land to all its inhabitants.

It shall be a jubilee for you; each of you is to

return to your family property and to your own

    clan.

February: Levicus 25:11The LORD said to Moses at Mount Sinai,

March Levicus 25:22Speak to the Israelites and say to them: When

you enter the land I am going to give you, the

land itself must observe a sabbath to the LORD.

April Levicus 25:33For six years sow your fields, and for six years

prune your vineyards and gather their crops.

May Levicus 25:4-54But in the seventh year the land is to have a

year of sabbath rest, a sabbath to the LORD. Do

not sow your fields or prune your vineyards.5Do not reap what grows of itself or harvest the

grapes of your untended vines. The land is to

    have a year of rest.

    June Luke 4:18-1918

The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because hehath anointed me to preach the gospel

to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the broken-

hearted, to preach deliverance to the capves,

and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at

liberty them that are bruised, 19To preach the

    acceptable year of the Lord.

July Levicus 25:6-76Whatever the land yields during the sabbath

year will be food for youfor yourself, your

male and female servants, and the hired worker

and temporary resident who live among you, 7

as well as for your livestock and the wild animals

in your land. Whatever the land produces may

    be eaten.

August Levicus 25:88Count off seven sabbath yearsseven mes

seven yearsso that the seven sabbath years

amount to a period of forty-nine years.

September Levicus 25:99Then have the trumpet sounded everywhere on

the tenth day of the seventh month; on the Day

of Atonement sound the trumpet throughout

    your land.

October Levicus: 25:11-1211The fiieth year shall be a jubilee for you; do

not sow and do not reap what grows of itself or

harvest the untended vines. 12 For it is a jubilee

and is to be holy for you; eat only what is taken

    directly from the fields.

    November Levicus 25:1313

In this Year of Jubilee everyone is to return totheir own property.

December Levicus: 25:1010Consecrate the fiieth year and proclaim

liberty throughout the land to all its inhabitants.

It shall be a jubilee for you; each of you is to

return to your family property and to your own

    clan.
