VENITE Psalm 95.1-7 Hymnal S34The Hymnal 1982, Service Music - #34 Daily Morning Prayer II, The Invitatory: Venite /Psalm 95

1 Come, let us sing to the Lord;let us shout for joy to the Rock of our salvation.

2 Let us come before his presence with thanksgivingand raise a loud shout to him with psalms.

3 For the Lord is a great God,and a great King above all gods.

4 In his hand are the caverns of the earth,and the heights of the hills are his also.

5 The sea is his, for he made it,and his hands have molded the dry land.

6 Come, let us bow down, and bend the knee,and kneel before the Lord our Maker.

7 For he is our God,and we are the people of his pasture and the sheep of his

hand.

LESSON: Numbers 14, 26-45

And the Lord spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying: How long shall this wicked congregation complain against me? I have heard the complaints of the Israelites, which they complain against me. Say to them, “As I live,” says the Lord, “I will do to you the very things I heard you say: your dead bodies shall fall in this very wilderness; and of all your number, included in the census, from twenty years old and upward, who have complained against me, not one of you shall come into the land in which I swore to settle you, except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun. But your little ones, who you said would become booty, I will bring in, and they shall know the land that you have despised. But as for you, your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness. And your children shall be shepherds in the wilderness for forty years, and shall suffer for your faithlessness, until the last of your dead bodies lies in the wilderness. According to the number of the days in which you spied out the land, forty days, for every day a year, you shall bear your iniquity, forty years, and you shall know my displeasure.” I the Lord have spoken; surely I will do thus to all this wicked congregation gathered together against me: in this wilderness they shall come to a full end, and there they shall die. And the men whom Moses sent to spy out the land, who returned and made all the congregation complain against him by bringing a bad report about the land—the men who brought an unfavorable report about the land died by a plague before the Lord. But Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh alone remained alive, of those men who went to spy out the land. When Moses told these words to all the Israelites, the people mourned greatly. They rose early in the morning and went up to the heights of the hill country, saying, “Here we are. We will go up to the place that the Lord has promised, for we have sinned.” But Moses said, “Why do you continue to transgress the command of the Lord? That will not succeed. Do not go up, for the Lord is not with you; do not let yourselves be struck down before your enemies. For the Amalekites and the Canaanites will confront you there, and you shall fall by the sword; because you have turned back from following the Lord, the Lord will not be with you.” But they presumed to go up to the heights of the hill country, even though the ark of the covenant of the Lord, and Moses, had not left the camp. Then the Amalekites and the Canaanites who lived in that hill country came down and defeated them, pursuing them as far as Hormah.Lector The Word of the Lord.People Thanks be to God.

LESSON: Acts 15.1-12

Then certain individuals came down from Judea and were teaching the brothers, “Unless you are circumcised according to the custom of Moses, you cannot be saved.” And after Paul and Barnabas had no small dissension and debate with them, Paul and Barnabas and some of the others were appointed to go up to Jerusalem to discuss this question with the apostles and the elders. So they were sent on their way by the church, and as they passed through both Phoenicia and Samaria, they reported the conversion of the Gentiles, and brought great joy to all the believers. When they came to Jerusalem, they were welcomed by the church and the apostles and the elders, and they reported all that God had done with them. But some believers who belonged to the sect of the Pharisees stood up and said, “It is necessary for them to be circumcised and ordered to keep the law of Moses.” The apostles and the elders met together to consider this matter. After there had been much debate, Peter stood up and said to them, “My brothers, you know that in the early days God made a choice among you, that I should be the one through whom the Gentiles would hear the message of the good news and become believers. And God, who knows the human heart, testified to them by giving them the Holy Spirit, just as he did to us; and in cleansing their hearts by faith he has made no distinction between them and us. Now therefore why are you putting God to the test by placing on the neck of the disciples a yoke that neither our ancestors nor we have been able to bear? On the contrary, we believe that we will be saved through the grace of the Lord Jesus, just as they will.” The whole

1 Seek the Lord while he wills to be found;call upon him when he draws near.

2 Let the wicked forsake their waysand the evil ones their thoughts;

3 And let them turn to the Lord, and he will havecompassion,

and to our God, for he will richly pardon.4 For my thoughts are not your thoughts,

nor your ways my ways, says the Lord.5 For as the heavens are higher than the earth,

so are my ways higher than your ways,and my thoughts than your thoughts.

6 For as rain and snow fall from the heavensand return not again, but water the earth,

7 Bringing forth life and giving growth,seed for sowing and bread for eating,

8 So is my word that goes forth from my mouth;it will not return to me empty;

9 But it will accomplish that which I have purposed,and prosper in that for which I sent it.

10Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:11As it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever.

Gospel: Luke 12.49-56

“I came to bring fire to the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled! I have a baptism with which to be baptized, and what stress I am under until it is completed! Do you think that I have come to bring peace to the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division! From now on five in one household will be divided, three against two and two against three; they will be divided: father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.” He also said to the crowds, “When you see a cloud rising in the west, you immediately say, ‘It is going to rain’; and so it happens. And when you see the south wind blowing, you say, ‘There will be scorching heat’; and it happens. You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of earth and sky, but why do you not know how to interpret the present time?”Lector The Word of the Lord.People Thanks be to God.

ANTHEM

There’s a wideness in God’s mercy like the wideness of the sea; there’s a kindness in his justice which is more than liberty.

There is no place where earth’s sorrows are more felt than up in heaven;there is no place where earth’s failings have such kindly judgment given.

For the love of God is broader than the measure of man’s mind;and the heart of the Eternal is most wonderfully kind.

But we make his love too narrow by false limits of our own;and we magnify his strictness with a zeal he will not own.

There is plentiful redemption in the blood that has been shed;there is joy for all the members in the sorrows of the Head.

There is grace enough for thousands of new worlds as great as this;there is room for fresh creations in that upper room of bliss.

If our love were but more simple, we should take him at his word;and our lives would be all gladness in the joy of Christ our Lord.

Music: Maurice Bevan (1921-2006)Text: Frederick William Faber (1814-1863)

V Show us your mercy, O Lord;R And grant us your salvation.V Clothe your ministers with righteousness;R Let your people sing with joy.V Give peace, O Lord, in all the world;R For only in you can we live in safety.V Lord, keep this nation under your care;R And guide us in the way of justice and truth.V Let your way be known upon earth;R Your saving health among all nations.V Let not the needy, O Lord, be forgotten;R Nor the hope of the poor be taken away.V Create in us clean hearts, O God;R And sustain us with your Holy Spirit.

GENERAL THANKSGIVING BCP 101

All Almighty God, Father of all mercies, we your unworthy servants give you humble thanks for all your goodness and loving-kindness to us and to all whom you have made. We bless you for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all for your immeasurable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ; for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory. And, we pray, give us such an awareness of your mercies, that with truly thankful hearts we may show forth your praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up our selves to your service, and by walking before you in holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory throughout all ages.
