Good Friday - April 10, Matthew 27:27-56

Passage Pointers (helping you consider how you might read the Bible together as a family)

The kids talk today is a reading of Carl Lafterton’s “The Garden, The Curtain and the Cross.” This book takes us through the big story of the Bible, from God’s creation all the way to God’s new creation, centred on the cross of Jesus. The Friday sermon will be focussed in on Matthew’s Gospel account of Good Friday. To help with understanding more of what happens in Jesus’ crucifixion, you may like to read through Matthew 27:45-56 together as a family.

God Talk (Helping you chat through the passage and its implications)

In the book, “The Garden, the Curtain and the Cross,” we heard that Jesus dying on the cross was the most bad thing that had ever happened, and it was the most sad day of all time.

• What bad things happened in Matthew 27:45-56?

• What was sad about that day in Matthew 27:45-56?

• Who was sad? Why were they sad?

In the book, we also heard about the big KEEP OUT curtain.

• When the curtain was torn in two, what did it mean?

• Why do we call today Good Friday?

Other good prompts for discussion:

• There’s some strange things that happen when Jesus dies! What did you think was strange?

• What did the people who were guarding Jesus say about him?

Activity/Craft

• As a family, you might like to play a game with a curtain (or a thick quilt/bed sheet). Hold up the curtain/quilt and have one family member sitting on each side of the curtain/quilt. Get the person on one side of the curtain to make a face (silly, serious, sad, happy or hungry) and the person get the person on the other side to guess what face they are making. You can rotate who gets to make a face. Once that’s all done, try it again without the curtain/quilt.

o It’s much easier for us to know each other when we can see each other. When the curtain was torn in two, we no longer had a barrier between us and God.

• As suggested when we read the book, we can say “Thank you Jesus, you’re amazing!” Why not take some time today to say thanks to Jesus? Get everyone in the family to write a thank you letter to Jesus for dying for us. The kids might like to draw a picture or write a poem.

o If you are feeling prepared, you may like to encourage your children to reflect on “the bad things we do, and the sad things they cause.” Can they think of bad things they do? Remind them that Jesus took these bad things too, and together give thanks to God.

• There is a colouring in sheet and a word search which you may like to print that relate to the book we read.

• Colin Buchanan has sung a bunch of songs this week on Easter - check out the video together at https://www.facebook.com/colinbuchananmusic/videos/914599378998769/
