Welcome to trinity college of music’s summer diary.
Our summer programme of events couldn’t get off to a better start with performances by the Trinity College of Music Opera Company of Britten’s comic opera, Albert Herring at Blackheath Halls. The vocal theme continues into May with a performance in the glorious setting of the Old Royal Naval College Chapel by the College’s Chamber Choir. Under the direction of Stephen Jackson, this ensemble is well-known for its exciting programming and polished performances and this concert will include a composition by Daryl Runswick, former Head of Composition at Trinity.
2010 marks the anniversaries of both Robert Schumann and Hugo Wolf, and our students will be celebrating with two Lieder concerts, to include some rare and unusual repertoire. This is a perfect opportunity to hear our students perform ‘at home’ in the Peacock Room at King Charles Court, the Old Royal Naval College.
Also, don’t miss your last chance this academic year to hear the Trinity College of Music Sinfonia, at Blackheath Halls on 6th May.
Finally, once our students have departed to enjoy a well-deserved summer break, our summer courses commence. If you are a jazz musician or singer, do read on to find out more about our two courses running in August.
To be kept informed of all forthcoming events join our free mailing list by contacting us on www.tcm.ac.uk/mailinglist or call 020 8305 4444 to register your details.

Britten - albert Herring
Wed 21 – sat 24 apr 7.30pmgreat Hall, Blackheath Halls
Trinity College of Music Opera CompanyDirector Bill Bankes-JonesMusical Director Steuart BedfordDesigner Ellan Parry
Created for Britten’s newly-formed English Opera Group with a mission to produce opera in English on a small scale, Albert Herring centres on the May Day celebrations in a rural Suffolk village at the very beginning of the twentieth century. Lacking girls of suitable moral fibre, a timid and innocent young lad is chosen to be the May Queen. Widely celebrated as a comic opera, Albert Herring sparkles with wit and intelligence overlying a convincing portrayal of a tight little society with all its strivings for uprightness and control, alongside the natural failings of such a community.
Trinity is delighted to be working again with director Bill Bankes-Jones and to collaborate for the first time with one of the world’s foremost Britten interpreters, conductor Steuart Bedford.

final of the daryl runswick competition for composition
tue 27 apr 7pmtheatre studio, trinity college of music
fri 7 may 1pmBfi foyer, southbank
The past few years have seen the Contemporary Music Group explore an ever wider range of repertoire, juxtaposing major works from the last 60 years with newly commissioned pieces by students. For this year’s Runswick Prize the composers have been tasked with creating a live score to a choice of four abstract films drawn from the BFI’s archives. Several of the finalists will have chosen the same ones so expect the rare experience of witnessing the effect that different soundtracks have on the same moving images.
The first half of the concert features works by seminal US composer Christian Wolff, a composer who among other things produces work that encourages both professional and lay players to develop ‘a spirit of liberating interdependence’. The composer will be visiting Trinity to give a presentation to the composition faculty on Thursday 3 June.
The pieces by the four Runswick finalists will be repeated at a lunchtime concert in the foyer of the BFI on the Southbank on Friday 7 May at 1pm.

Bernada alba Music and Lyrics by Michael John LaChiusa.
Based on Federico García Lorca’s play, this recent musical (the first production was in New York in 2006) is set in the early 1930s in rural Spain where Bernada Alba, a newly-widowed mother, is struggling to cope with her five rebellious daughters and elderly mother. The intense and fiery music perfectly expresses the passions and emotions hidden just below the surface of the different family members. Performed by students on the BA (Hons) course in Musical Theatre.

Christian Wolff is one of the important figures to emerge from the American experimental music scene of the 50’s and 60’s. A particular interest in Wolff’s work has been to allow performers flexibility and ranges of freedom at the actual time of a piece’s performance; to devise notations to make this practicable; to foster among both professional and lay players a spirit of liberating interdependence; and to draw material from traditions of popular political music.

giving
The support of Trinity’s friends and donors is crucial in maintaining the highest standards of excellence in all aspects of Trinity’s work. This events diary presents a dazzling array of opportunities to hear the talents of outstanding musicians training at Trinity today, and the world class professional musicians who work with and inspire our student body.
Philanthropic support for student scholarships and bursaries is the most direct and rewarding way to ensure the future of our next generation of musicians. Our Scholarship Fund exists to help talented young artists attain the very highest levels of training regardless of income and personal circumstances.
Our friends and supporters also help to bring our students together with schools and communities in south-east London so that people of all ages at any level of ability can share the experience of participating in music making and performance.
