Co-Pastors' 2017 Annual ReportSubmitted by Kathleen Gorman-Coombs and Timothy Coombs

Dear Friends: - ---"-Tv

When 2017 began, Trinity had recently declared ourselves a "More Light Presbyterian"congregation, and we were in the midst of the "Pneumatrix" experience, a process through which asmall representative group did some exploring and cultivated brainstorming about new ways for Trinityto move into the future, live into our More Light identity, and otherwise continue to grow together.(See the Pneumatrix report, page 18)

As the year unfolded, we put up our "Neighbor Banner" ("No matter where you come from, we areglad you are our neighbor!" In Spanish, English, and Arabic)—which, sadly was blown down by astrong wind in the fall, but we have supplies and a plan for a sturdier installation once the ground thawsin .the Spring. Meanwhile, you'll notice a smaller version out near Swaggertown Road, stillproclaiming the message of welcome.

On June 11, a small group of us went for .the first time to. the Pride Parade.in Albany; we had .a greattime, joined other More Light Presbyterians making a combined statement of welcome andaffirmation . . . it was a great way for us (Tim and Kathy) to begin the celebration of our 34th WeddingAnniversary, and pictures of us carrying our "Married 34 years today, glad to share this gift witheveryone!" sign even made some official websites out there.

Summer brought yet another successful Vacation Bible School focused on the story of Jonah andincorporating mission related creations for the SICM Food Room, Women at the jail, and folks atB aptist Retirement Center

More than a dozen folks participated in one or more book discussions which began with a study ofWaking Up White, by Debbie Irving, and working our way through Jodi Piccoulf s Small, GreatThings , Ta Nehisi Coates5 Between the World & Me, and Americanah! By Chimimanda NgozieAdichie. All of these books, some fiction, some non-fiction, explore the issue of race and relatedissues, with eye opening perspectives and sometimes challenging information. Now that the holidaysare over, plans are to resume discussions, with a couple of books being considered to continue thisgrowth path.

.Another small group informally .spent some time .sprucing up the Annex, creating more uniform'bulletin boards, with more organization for the information we're sharing, and also sharing-.descriptions and "how to get involved" info about more of the Mission programs we support and are.involved in.

:In early Fall, we held what is to be the first of Quarterly forums about contemporary issues of socialconcern, with the documentary Resilience and discussion with Prevent Child Abuse Executive DirectorTim Hathaway and YWCA Executive Director Kim Siciliano. : • • • " .

Most exciting for me (Kathy) this year has been involvement in the Schenectady Clergy Against Hategroup which began to gather shortly after the 2016 election. I have met fascinating people, and washonored to help to plan the Merfaith Thanksgiving Service at the Sikh Temple, and even moredelighted to share that with several Trinity folks who attended. • . . :

A highlight for me (Tim) was the week on the Appalachian Service Project near. Hazard, Kentucky, with the Elaine, Rhett, and Jen Parsons, Darren Gundrum and a few kids from his BH Methodist youthgroup. It was hard, but worthwhile work and almost worth the case of sciatica I got! I continue to workon gaining my hours for my coaching certification. If anyone wants to help me out, let me know. I need100 hours total and I'm only about a third of the way there. - -

• ,-.*_",>•One of the tenets of the Pneumatix experience is that in order to learn new ways of doing things., wehave to be willing to experiment... to try new things, see how they go, debrief and discuss and tweak .. . looking back at the year it seems it's been a combination of this kind of "trial and error" along -withan increasing focus on truly living into embracing diversity and learning how to be more and moreinclusive of God's people, walking humbly together on our journey toward doing justice and lovingkindness.

Looking forward to 2018!

Kathy & Tim

Administration 2017 Annual ReportLiz Dobson-Davis, co-chair

Administration is the quiet committee in-the background of church life, keeping thingsrunning and attending to various details. Here's some of what that has involved in 2017:

Thank you notes with a sketch of Trinity on'the front are available in the Secretary'soffice. . . . . .

With the many requests for church use, there is a master calendar outside theSecretary's office that Karen Eglintine and I will use to track events for 2018. Requestforms should still be submitted for our review.

We have also created an online "Google Calendar" and are working on how to makethat accessible to congregational members.

Education 2017 Annual ReportRespectfully Submitted, Melissa Peterson, Christian Education

Elder

Education may be described as an "enlightening experience". This definition certainlyreflects on the 2017 Christian Education Year.

Sunday School (students age 3-5^ grade) has a steady enrollment of 6- 12 students inclass on a Sunday morning. Our curriculum is the Presbyterian Church, USA's "Growingin Grace in Gratitude.," which is easy to use and engages the students. Many thanks to allwho have taught this year.

Confirmation students have been attending worship, doing sermon reflections and otherprojects to assist in the life of the church.

Our Adult Education has included book studies regarding race in America, presentationsto help understand the plight of refugees in our country and other activities meant to buildcommunity with our members.

Vacation Bible School was a big success this summer. This summer's theme was Jonahand the Whale. Our wonderful teens assisted Pastor Tim in telling the story of Jonah andwhat happened after he went to Nineveh. Children engaged in singing, science, art, storytelling, games, snacks and cupcake decorating to share at the Thursday eveningculminating family picnic. Once again, the VBS was done with the help of KristinBodden of the First Reformed Church and some volunteers from that church. Thanks toour own Polly Benjamin, Jenn Breslin, Jen Parsons, Wendi Brandow, Tim Coombs, and a host of teen and adult volunteers for making this all possible. It was a very busyweek!

2017 ended with the Sunday School Pageant. This year the story of the birth of Jesuswas told from the perspective of the angels and the shepherds. It was a lot of fun. Thanksto Polly Benjamin and her team for putting this all together.

We are definitely learning and growing at Trinity,

Evangelism 2017 Annual ReportSubmitted by Glenn Pietrow, Evangelism Chair

This has been a relatively quiet year for the evangelism team. The "control" room in theback of the church was reorganized with an eye towards making it easier for the"clickers" to turn on/off all the equipment. We also purchased a digital recorder for thesanctuary that allows us to record the lessons/sermons directly off of Kathy and Tim'smicrophones. Wayne Virkler then uploads the sermons to the website where they areavailable for all to listen to. All the "clickers" have been trained in the use of the newequipment.

We welcomed 7 new members this year and look forward to welcoming a few morefamilies in the coming months. Our Trinity family is growing and I'm sure that I'm notthe only one who feels a sense of excitement in the congregation.

Just a reminder that we are all the face of Trinity to our guests and new members. If yousee someone new, someone that you don't recognize, say Hi, introduce yourself and letthem know that they're welcome. A kind word and a smile goes a long way towardsmaking people feel welcome. Also, don't be afraid to ask new members to help out withsomething you think they'd be good at Everyone wants to feel needed and part of the"family".

Mission Committee 2017 Annual ReportRespectfully submitted, Mariellen Boomhower, Mission Chair

Trinity's Mission program continues to be a strong component of our lives together atTrinity. Many, many Trinity members and friends participate in activities through theyear following the call of Micah 6:8. This year's committee is comprised of MeganBeauchamp, Polly Benjamin, Mariellen Boomhower, Wendi Brandow, Jennifer Breslin,Gina Casey, Bill Dodge, Jean Hayes, Steve Parsons, and Lisa Thomas. Kathy Gorman-Coombs continues to be our spiritual guide and mentor.

SICM (Schenectady Inner City Ministry) is a program which has long engaged ourmembers through participation in programs and in financial support. May'sCROPWALK is always a popular activity with many participants and generous financialcontributions. Money raised on this day helps address local, national, and internationalhunger issues. We were also able to financially support the SICM Summer InternshipProgram which enables a teen to work and participate in the Summer Lunch Programand other SICM related activities. For two weeks this summer we had intergenerationalteams volunteering at Collins Park and Steinmetz Park helping to serve lunches to schoolage children in the area. A dedicated contingent of Trinity volunteers works at the FoodPantry and at other related SICM functions. The Sunday School children and adultvolunteers helped in preparing Easter goodie baskets to be handed out to those in need. Our own Chef Nicky Boehm even prepares the meal for the SICM Annual FundraisingDinner.

Patty's Place, a place of safety and refuge for sex workers in Schenectady., has continuedto receive financial and volunteer help to further their mission. We much appreciate thecontinued donations of toiletries in the Annex. They are put to very good use.

Your pledge donations enable us to financially support local organizations which helpthose in our neighborhoods in need. Two of those are Scotia Relief and SchenectadyHome Furnishings.

Our participation in programs at the Schenectady County Jail continues through theyear. A team of Trinity volunteers staff the jail library each Monday morning. If you areinterested in learning more about this needed service please talk with Don Wheeler. Wealso continue to visit the women on the'fifth floor on a regular basis. If you are interestedin an opportunity to learn more please talk with Kathy Gorman-Coombs or MariellenBoomhower. The women were incredibly grateful for the inspired cards crafted by thechildren at VBS. We also were able to provide Advent devotionals to the inmatesbecause of your generous contributions when you purchased one for yourself.

Woodberry Crossing in Parkton, Maryland provides an opportunity for Trinity folk toassist in all aspects of activity and spiritual camp life. We work with children journeyingto the camp from Baltimore to learn about rural life or we help build or repair sites at thefacility. This year's adventure was described by several people as "awesome"; If you areable, we invite you to j oin us next summer for a wonderfully enriching., tiring, exhilarating, faith-enriching adventure. 'Volunteers of all ages are warmly welcomed. Our partnership with the NENY Regional Food Bank continues to supply 30 children inthe Scotia-Glenville School District with the Weekend Backpack Program each Friday.

We are financially supported by the people at Concerned for the Hungry of SchenectadyCounty, a grant from the Joshua Foundation., and by your generous donations to theprogram. A team of drivers rotates picking up the food in Latham and delivering it to thechurch. Another team meets on either Wednesday or Thursday evenings to pack theindividual bags and deliver them to the school building. This is a fun-filled way for kidsand adults to provide a much-needed service to children in our community who would gowithout sufficient food when school is not in session. ,-:;

In 2017P we began two projects involving being a welcoming community to refugees.Early in the year we held a sheet collection to help supply the warehouse at the USCRI(United States Committee on Refugees and Immigration) to help those escaping theirhome countries due to war and persecution. During the Advent and Christmas season werequested donations of basic household items for the group. We give great thanks to somany of you for your incredible generosity and abundance in giving.

On the international front, we have supported a program to purchase water filters both inGuatemala and in areas affected by the recent hurricane disasters. Our GuatemalaPartnership continues and we look forward to learning more as Kathy becomes involvedin a new leadership role in the program.Introduced by the New Matrix study recommendations,, we assisted with a ChildhoodResilience Program to help prevent child abuse and help those being harmed. WendiBrandow organized a panel discussion and video presentation which was open to Trinitypeople and to the community at large. We are looking forward to additionalpresentations on topics relevant to our larger community. Your pledge donations alsoenabled the purchase of the large Welcome Banner on the front lawn.

We are most grateful for your contributions of school supplies for children in our localarea. We also appreciate the Sunday School Children who filled bags of school suppliesfor children affected by the year's hurricanes under the umbrella of Church WorldService. Our denominational collections - One Great Hour of Sharing, Peace andGlobal Witness Offering and Christmas Joy — are yet another area of support by yourgenerosity.

The Vendor Fair 2017 was an enormous success. (Funds raised in 2016 went to supportthe Schenectady Clergy Against Hate Program and to the Presbyterian Disaster HurricaneAssistance Fund.) Megan Beauchamp and Wendi Brandow chaired the event which wassupported by a large contingent of willing bakers, cooks and workers. The sale was anenormous success with wide community participation and great shopping and eating forthe Trinity folk as well. Property 2017 Annual ReportJohn Hutchison, Chairperson

Most eventful on the property front this year was replacement of the educationwing roof Early in the year, it was determined the old roof was beyond its useful life, and a number of bids for replacement of the roof were obtained. A contractor wastentatively selected to replace the roof with a thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO) membranesystem at a cost, of $16,800, which included partial removal of the old roof, newinsulation board and new flashing. A pledge drive ensued, the proceeds of which nearlycovered the cost of the new roof, with the remainder drawn from other available funds asappropriate. This work, which also included some miscellaneous patching of the Annexroof, was completed later in the year.

During the year a "punch list", of general upkeep and repair tasks wasdeveloped, and a number of individuals have adopted items on the list Thanks to all foryour willingness to help in this regard, both in the year past and in advance for the yearahead.

The church building continues to be cleaned by Aftabunessa "Laki" Rahman, although it takes all of us to keep the place tidy. And as always, we rely on our .community to come out for our regular spring and fall clean ups to clear away all thataccumulates here and there. Thanks to everyone who turned out for these events. Also, aspecial thanks to Bill and Carole Palmer who helped maintain our garden areas through -the summer, and to Tom Helenek for his work in maintaining the lawn. Everyone's timeand effort in helping to care for the property is much appreciated.

Finally, I am pleased to note improvement of the Church grounds by way of twoseparate projects this year. These included: 1) construction of a new concrete walkwayfrom the parking lot to the lower level of the education wing, and 2) construction of anew fire pit, seating and other miscellaneous improvements at the north end of thebuilding. These projects were conceived, planned and carried out by Skyler Jessup andRhett Parsons, respectively, each in pursuit of the rank of Eagle Scout. These amenitieswill no doubt benefit our community for years to come. ^

Worship Committee 2017 Annual ReportLinda K. Rockinger, Worship Committee Chair

Worship is the central activity around which Trinity's community gathers. Providing forthe weekly and special event services is a main focus of the Pastors and is supported bythe Worshipchairperson and small groups that meet as necessary to plan and implement worshipthemes and seasonal events.

Maintaining the highest quality worship experience possible week after week is importantand many elements must be in place for that to happen.

Scheduling ushers and announcers weekly., and preparing Communion andscheduling servers monthly are ongoing duties. Thanks to all who have volunteered totake part in these important aspects of worship.

Decorating for seasonal occasions, ordering poinsettias and lilies (along with otherflowers this year), creating new banners, ordering worship supplies like candles, andoverseeing the sanctuary are all items on the Worship "to do" list.

With the support of the worship committee we have been able to enhance the visual spaceof the sanctuary to correlate with pastoral themes. Thanks to all the volunteers who havetaken part in this. Special thanks to Adrienne Hall for her inspiration and the creation ofour new banners portraying inclusivity (a dove made with rainbow and skin colormosaic) and our theological mission statement from Micah 6 (created with Sunday schoolchildren's handprints).

The music program at Trinity is exemplary. We continue to be blessed with thepresence of Mira Ordon as Music Director and more recently Keyboardist MeganJames.

This summer I continued to collaborate with our pastors Tim and Kathy, MissionChair Mariellen Boomhower, and Education Chair Melissa Peterson to brainstormways to include our youth in worship and mission (known as "MEW7)- We renamedour once per month "Children's Sunday". It will now be referred to as "IntergenerationalSunday" to ensure a message of inclusivity. • - . .

Another major summer project was cleaning & reorganizing mission/worship • . . .materials. These committees will now be much more efficient Thanks to the "crew" •: • • v :including Kathy Gorman-Combs and Mariellen Boomhower.

Trinity continues to be an official "More- Light" church. Rainbows adorn various areasof the sanctuary; pins and stickers are available in the annex.

"Worship in the Pines" presented a challenge due to weather issues (we usually targetMemorial Day and Labor Day). The hope is to continue to explore ways to use thissacred "thin space".

.-*_">•While my term of Chair has ended I look forward to assisting in the decor portion ofworship in the sacred space that is Trinity.

Pneumatrix ReportSubmitted by Tim Coombs

On the whole, the Pneumatrix experience for Trinity turned out positive, but themembers of the team were often frustrated during the process. Deb Wright via Skype hadmuch to teach in each session leaving little time for discussion and process. Everycongregation is different, but I think we understood the concept of "adaptive change"early and would have appreciated more time to talk about what it implied for our owncontext. It was not unusual for the team to stay after the formal gathering ended to talkand think through what Trinity needed. We were particularly grateful for Rose Tackling'swillingness to stay and help us during these post-session discussions. Kate's observationswere also helpful to prod new ways to view our situation.

It was during the fifth Pneumatrix session that a member of our team articulated astatement about Trinity that has been heard off and on throughout the years, namely, that"Trinity is Glenville's best kept secret." For years this statement has been experienced asa source of subtle pride, yet within the Pneumatrix discussions it began to be heard as adescription of our church's inadequate witness. If we are "Glenville's best kept secret"how is that serving God or our neighbor well?

The team decided that improving our outward witness was the adaptive changewe needed to make as a congregation. Adaptive change implies that learning needs to bepart of the process, because if you knew all there is to know it would be a technicalchange.

Since our Pneumatrix team concluded its work, Trinity's leadership has beenexploring ways that we may better serve our community in a public way. Effortsinclude:

- Scheduling forums on community interest, teaming up with other agencies. Our first was a showing of the movie "Resilience" and panel discussion, which we did with NYS Child Protection Agency and School board.Having a table in Scotia's "Holiday on the Avenue" in conjunction with theVillage. We are scheduling another forum on the Opioid epidemic. Most important, we will be working through the book "Creating Your StoryBrand" by Donald Miller, which is a marketing strategy that helps businesses(or churches) understand how they can help people fulfill their individualcallings.

With each effort, we have been engaging in a time of debriefing so that we canlearn how to do it better the next time. Our goal is to be understood by our neighbors astheir ally and friend who seeks to help them improve their lives through living the graceof Jesus Christ in their midst. This way we can better fulfill our calling to "do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with God."

Finance Committee 2017 Annual ReportLiz Dobson-Davis, co-chair

Pledges for 2017 exceeded the asking budget by $3,924.00. Session met to discusspossible items where increased funding could benefit Trinity. These included:purchasing a refurbished computer for the Secretary, increasing the Secretary's hours, reinstating nursery care, buying digital recording equipment for the Sanctuary, increasingthe budget for the Mission Committee, purchasing or leasing a new copier and increasingProfessional expenses for Tim & Kathy.

The Finance committee helped coordinate a fundraising campaign in the Fall toreplace the roof over the education wing, as well as repairing a couple of areas of theannex roof where leaks were occurring. The total cost was $16,800 and most of this wasraised through the generosity of Trinity members and friends, the remaining portion($3,438) came from Trinity's reserve funds. Work was completed by Finelli Constructionin October.

Looking ahead, one idea is to have away for Trinity folks to make on-line donations, which would be easier for some, especially those who live far away.
