13 People were bringing little childrento Jesus to have him touch them, but thedisciples rebuked them. 14 When Jesussaw this, he was indignant. He said tothem, “Let the little children come tome, and do not hinder them, for thekingdom of God belongs to such asthese. 15 I tell you the truth, anyonewho will not receive the kingdom ofGod like a little child will never enterit.” 16 And he took the children in hisarms, put his hands on them and blessedthem.

1 Therefore, since we are surrounded byso great a cloud of witnesses, let us alsolay aside every weight and the sin thatclings so closely, and let us run withperseverance the race that is set beforeus, 2 looking to Jesus the pioneer andperfecter of our faith, who for the sakeof the joy that was set before himendured the cross, disregarding itsshame, and has taken his seat at theright hand of the throne of God.3 Consider him who endured such hos-tility against himself from sinners, sothat you may not grow weary or loseheart.

to return. We are operating in the Humanities
with thirty full-time faculty. I am so
grateful. We had around 50. Some faculty
could not return for various reasons. I have a
faculty member who was caught in the flood
and stayed at the Convention Center. The sto-
ries are incredible. I have never cried so much
in my life.
The incredible thing is the sparks of
life the return of students has brought to the
city. All the universities are open, and we all
struggle with our own logistical issues. We
lack resources and space but are infinite in our
resourcefulness and patience. We are all also
crazy.
MY FEMA TRAILER ARRIVED . . .
but they haven't hooked up the electricity!? I
think that is a perfect example of the limbo life
we live. We go to the wash and fold. Eating
becomes a major set of negotiations with calo-
ries and the wallet for the day. Oh, to cook a
meal! But it is a “hell of a place to bring your
family!” (Bush) And a city that will be
“Chocolate” again. Lord, save us from politi-
cians!
We have the “Bring Back New Orleans
Plan” which was headed by a real estate devel-
oper. The report recommends a moratorium on

The country is gearing up for the
Mardi Gras celebration in New Orleans,
Louisiana. Our member, Dr. Danille Guthrie,
teaches at Dillard in New Orleans; and she
has written the following piece for your
prayerful consideration:
Dearly Beloved,
We are in the season of Carnival, a
time of year I have come to appreciate and
love since I moved to New Orleans. Most are
more aware of Mardi Gras, but the season
begins with Three Kings Day and culminates
with Lent and Easter. But this year, I have
mixed feelings...
As you are probably aware Dillard is
operating at the Hilton Riverside. Students,
faculty and staff live, work and play at the
Hilton and Marriot. It was quite amazing.
We prepared for the return of 800 students
and over 1000 came. We even had to turn
many away. Housing is the critical issue for
the city, and we ran out of space.
It was wonderful when I was calling
faculty all over the country beseeching them

moratorium on rebuilding for four months. I
bet he lives in his house! It is madness, a
tremendous land grab. I need to form a real
estate investment corporation to buy up some
of this property, because someone is going to
make a lot of money!
It is the feeling of powerlessness that
further traumatizes us. It is debilitating. So
rather than be the victim, I run down to City
Hall to get the building permit I had applied
for online. I will not wait. This is BS.
(Pastor Wright taught us that "B.S." means
Bush's Stuff!) I have a new roof, duct work
completed, and the electrician comes in next
week. I need a home!
Oh yes, the trailer sits on my front
lawn. I call it my “Love Nest” because you
can only be in there with folk you really like.
PLEASE, PLEASE know that we
need your support; we have so much work to
do. This is no quick fix. The whole region is
still suffering. Those displaced around you
need your understanding because they are
missing home, trying to adjust. This is not
something one can just get over. We have
experienced the death of so much. And that is
why we celebrate Carnival - to love and laugh
and dance, then mourn before the resurrec-

The time has come for a new vision
of U.S. public policy! On March 10, 2006,
over 800 faithful Christians will gather in
Washington, D.C. to challenge the shocking
economic and social disparities endured by
too many of our sisters and brothers. The trag-
ic natural disasters of the past year have
demonstrated that individual generosity must
go hand-in-hand with a vigorous government

commitment to the common good.
Biblical faith leads us to a comprehen-
sive understanding of moral values in public
policy. Jesus Christ, Prince of Peace and advo-
cate for the vulnerable, inspires us to act in sol-
idarity. Participants will examine U.S. policy,
worship together and network with other justice
advocates. The event, sponsored annually by
the United Church of Christ, the Christian
Church Disciples of Christ and many other
Protestant and Catholic organizations, will cul-
minate in a massive lobbying effort on Capitol
Hill on March 13, 2006.
Turn your biblical vision into voice!

On Wednesday of last week, Resident Bush signed into law the Deficit ReductionOmnibus Reconciliation Act of 2005. With his signature, Medicaid recipients can expecthigher co-payments and deductibles. College students may face higher interest rates onstudent loans. Work requirements for women on welfare are likely to be tightened.Federal aid to states for child-support enforcement will be curtailed. This bill was signedin the same week that support for those ravaged by Hurricane Katrina were forced todepart from their FEMA-funded hotel rooms, many with nowhere to go. This is also thesame week that Bush paid homage to Coretta Scott King.
I am always amazed at how actions contradict words. Bush lauded Mrs. King asone who tried to bring us together, yet the policies of the government continue to pushpeople apart based on race and class. The actions of Bush and FEMA this week echo theactions of Bush two years ago when he laid a wreath on Dr. King’s crypt, and appointed ajudge, Charles Pickering, the next day who went against everything Dr. King stood for.The contradiction in words and actions lies in the fact that the government’s policies andprocedures have failed its people, while words were lifted, honoring one who lived andfought for people.

In 1 Corinthians 16, Paul talks about givingof our material possessions to God: Nowabout the collection for God's people: Dowhat I told the Galatian churches to do. Onthe first day of every week, each one of youshould set aside a sum of money in keepingwith his income, saving it up, so that when Icome no collections will have to be made.1 Corinthians 16:1 (NIV)
“On the first day of the week” means thatgiving is a regular, planned activity, and nota “when I get around to it” function.
“Each one of you” means that each person,as an individual, has a particular responsibili-ty to give. Giving to God is not a responsi-bility that can be shifted to someone else.
“In keeping with his income,” Paul does notstate the exact amount we are to givebecause each can give according to his pros-perity. The more the prosperity, the greaterthe amount given.
To sum up Paul’s stewardship theology:Give at a regular interval from a responsibleposition with a grateful heart and in propor-tion to what you have received.
