Continue Seeking the Lord in Lent On April 28th I will be preaching on the woman who touched the hem of Jesus’ garment and was healed (Matt. 9, Mark 5). In that

message I will share how the woman was in need of healing. Her situation was desperate, for 12 years she had a bleeding problem (possibly menstrual bleeding). The doctors were never able to help her. She suffered physically, financially and socially (she was an outcast). And yet the day came when she was determined to turn her need over to someone, she believed could truly help her – Jesus. When the opportunity came and she pressed through the crowd believing if she could just touch the hem of Jesus’ garment, she would be healed, and this is what happened. Jesus said to the woman, “Your faith has made you well.”

I will share in the message how faith has two sides like a coin: first, the aggressive side, do all you can do side, illustrated by the woman pushing through the crowd and being determined to touch Jesus’ garment. Second, the passive side or the receiving side, illustrated by the woman receiving healing as she touched the Lord. I will emphasize in the message that the woman did not have to stress and strain to touch Jesus’ garment. She simply reached out in simple faith. Sometimes when we are stressed, we also get stressed out in our faith. But the Lord would have us do all we can to enable our faith – read God’s Word, spend time in pray (ask, seek and knock). But after we have done all we can in seeking God in the context of our need, we must then REST IN THE LORD because the rest is up to Him. The woman reached out to touch Jesus’ garment, but it was the Lord who ultimately healed her. By faith she received!

These two sides of faith go together. During this season of Lent continue to seek the Lord in your life, to be close to him, to serve him, and to love him. At the same time rest in him, receive from him. Allow him to be your strength in the

midst of stressful situations. Remember, if you are straining to have faith, step back, relax and rest in the Lord. Having done all you can to reach out to be in touch with God, let His touch come to you. Also remember the reason for God’s touch in our lives is so that we can reach out and touch others with God’s love, grace and presence. Neither Matthew 9 nor Mark 5 talk about the woman going out to touch others after having been touched herself. But we can be sure that she did. Having a testimony of God’s touch, we can rest assured others were touched through this woman who was touched by God’s grace. Let us do the same in this season of Lent as we approach Resurrection Sunday, Easter!

God Bless, Pastor Jeff

TUESDAY BIBLE STUDY AT SAMES & COOK 3:00-4:00 pm

The Sames and Cook Bible Study will be reading the book by Liz Curtis Higgs – The Bad

Girls of the Bible. The author offers a clear-sighted, life-changing approach to understanding those “other women” in Scripture such as Delilah, Jezebel, Rahab, Lot’s wife and others. Liz combines a contemporary retelling of their stories with a solid, verse-by-verse study of their lives and the lessons we can learn from them.

Whether they were Bad to the Bone, Bad for a Moment, or Bad for a Season but Not Forever, these infamous sisters show us how not to handle the challenges of life.

Vulnerable yet victorious

While taking boxing lessons, Timothy Keller was warned to never put his hands at his side. That position leaves one’s face and torso exposed to the opponent.

In a video on ChurchLeaders.com, the pastor and author notes that Jesus’ hands

weren’t just out to the side on the cross; they were nailed there. “How much more vulnerable could he be?” That vulnerability, Keller says, makes Jesus’ death the ultimate act of friendship, which should encourage people who feel far from God.

Defining friendship as candor and consistency, Keller notes that friends always let you in, never let you down and always have time for you. Jesus didn’t let us down on Good Friday — or on Easter. Although Jesus “had all of hell coming down on him,” Keller says, our Savior proclaimed to his Father, “Not my will but thine be done.”
