Thanks to our readers and our ad-vertisers we have enjoyed tremendousgrowth here at Neighborhood News &Lifestyles and along with that growthhave come upgrades to our websiteand email system. We cherish theemails and letters we receive fromreaders and depend upon the informa-tion we receive to keep our news briefsinteresting and the community calen-dar up-to-date. With four publica-tions, each with two email addresses one for ads and one for editorialcontent we decided to simplifythings for ourselves and our readersand advertisers. Plus a recent problemwith Yahoo underscored the need for achange. However, that problem didwarm our hearts because of the greatoutpouring of support and concernthat came from advertisers.

Wed like to share what happenedsimply to warn others about possibleemail hacking. Our General ManagerJim OReilly has a great relationshipwith our advertisers, many of whomhe has worked with for about eightyears, and when his email account was

hacked and an email went out to hisentire address book indicating that hewas stuck in a foreign country and hispersonal effects and travel documentshad been stolen, including his passportand identification, and that he neededassistance. It looked like it was sentfrom him but it was not. This emailwas sent out at 5:42 a.m. I saw itwhen I first woke up and at firstthought that Jim was playing a joke onme, but when I saw the time it wassent I knew better. Even with his greatsense of humor, I knew he wouldntbe playing any jokes that early!

I called Jim around 7 a.m. to lethim know and he had already receivednumerous emails from concernedclients offering to help him. Jim could-nt believe how many people reachedout to him. This really drove home acouple of points to us. First, we have afantastic, caring community and clien-tele. And, second, we needed to im-plement a more securecommunication.

If this ever happens to you, thefirst thing to do is change your pass-word. To keep your account safe, it isrecommended to change your pass-

    word every couple of months.

If you are looking for an ortho-dontist for your teenager, or even foryourself, Smiles by Graff is an excel-lent choice. Their fun, patient-fo-cused office has two nearby locationsthat make receiving treatment easyand convenient. The Trinity office islocated at 1822 Health Care Drivejust off of Mitchell Blvd., and theNew Port Richey office is at 5522Gulf Drive near Gulf High School.

Dr. Myron S. Graff, DMD, PA isa Board Eligible Orthodontist whohas been practicing in this area since1976. Dr. Graff earned his BachelorsDegree from NYU in 1968, and thenattended the University of Pennsylva-nia where he received his DMD de-gree in 1972. Originally drawn topediatric dentistry during his servicein the Army, his passion for ortho-dontics came from seeing what a dif-ference could be made in peopleslives just by improving their smiles.Subsequently, he graduated from Co-

lumbia Universitys School of Dentaland Oral Surgery in 1976. Falling inlove with this area, he opened his firstpractice nearby and has been improv-ing smiles and making a differenceever since.

Dr. Graff says, I am the only or-

timeGave us a great plan of careand put my son at ease!

When was the last time your doc-tor actually called you to remind youof your appointment?

Dr. Graff is extremely dedicatedto making a difference in the worldaround him, and in inspiring the peo-ple that he comes in contact with tofollow their dreams and go furtherthan they might have dreamed possi-ble. He does this by simply being per-sonal and by taking that extra time toget to know his patients. In fact, hewill even call his patients personally toremind them of their appointmentthe following day!

Dr. Graffs colorful and humor-ous personality is evident at both ofhis offices. His wife, Lonni Hopkins, teaches at H.W. Blake High Schoolfor the Arts, a magnet school for theVisual and Performing Arts in Tampa, and Dr. Graff enjoys supporting theyoung artists in her class and in thecommunity by purchasing their art-work for his offices. Some are dra-matic, and some are downright funny, but the art speaks to the students. Healso has real old school arcade ma-chines and an open, family friendly

office that makes going to the ortho-dontist an enjoyable experience forpatients as well as their families. A fa-ther to three adult children, Dr.Graffs experience makes the differ-ence.

Proud of their no-wait policy,Smiles by Graff refers to their waitingroom as a reception area instead. Infact, according to their statistics, 95%of their patients receive treatmentwithin five minutes of their appoint-ment time, and 90% of patients com-plete their treatment on time. For many of us, losing weight isextremely difficult. Many dont knowwhere to start, while others feel as iftheyve tried everything and nothinghas worked. Losing weight is aboutlooking good, absolutely, but its alsoabout feeling good and actually beinggood as in being healthy. It seems likethere is a new study released everyweek that links obesity to other healthconcerns like heart disease, diabetes, and even cancer. According to recentstatistics quoted in their brochure, obese workers lose 13 more days ofwork, on average, than non-obeseworkers, and they spend $2,000 moreon health insurance than their health-ier coworkers. Obesity is now consid-ered to be an epidemic, and theprofessionals at Medi-Weightloss Clin-ics of Trinity are ready to help youevery step of the way. If you are readyto lose weight and are looking for aprogram that is proven and effective, then the physician-guided Medi-Weightloss program may be for you.

    The Trinity Medi-Weightloss

Clinic is located in the Mitchell Cross-ings Shopping Plaza at the corner ofLittle Rd. and Mitchell Blvd. and hasbeen helping patients lose weight sincethey opened their doors in 2010.Medi-Weightloss Clinics of Trinity ispart of a network of Medi-WeightlossClinics that stretches across theUnited States. In fact there are 83 lo-cations, and it is one of the fastestgrowing franchises in existence be-cause it is the one that works! Infact, according to their website, theirprogram has helped patients lose morethan 2.3 million pounds.

The weight-loss focused businesswas founded in 2004 by EdwardKaloust and Carol Balkcom, whofound that Americans were spendingbillions of dollars per year on weight-loss programs that did not work long-term. Together they wanted to createa program that was multi-faceted, andthat helped people lose and keep theirweight off long-term.

Mary Ann Levine, owner of theTrinity Clinic says, This program re-ally does work because we guide peo-ple into making a lifestyle change.

Levine, who manages three FloridaMedi-Weightloss Clinics, wholeheart-edly believes in the program becauseshe has seen what a difference it canmake.

Marcus Occhipinti, MD, is thephysician on staff at the Trinity Clinic, and his experience and passion forhelping people live a healthier lifestylehas been a large part of the programfor many local residents.

Dr. Occhipinti says, This pro-gram can help anybody. Its for peoplewho are very overweight and it is alsofor people who are not terribly over-weight, but want to lose weight. Eachpatient is unique and so is their treat-ment.

The Medi-Weightloss Clinicsprogram is based on five keys to suc-cess: Medical, Motivational, Educa-tional, Nutritional and Physical. Byguiding patients through the programwith these five keys in mind, patientstruly succeed, the weight comes offand they learn to keep it off.

How it worksThere are three phases to the pro-

gram, and phase one begins with theinitial consultation. The 90-minuteinitial consultation at Medi-WeightlossClinics is a complete physical thattakes place with Dr. Occhipinti. It in-cludes a New Patient Starter Kit, acomprehensive blood panel, and aphysical exam that includes vital signsand an EKG. He then takes a weight, body fat analysis, and a waist circum-ference, and discusses exercise and nu-trition and the expectations for bothgoing forward. Dr. Occhipinti mayprescribe medicine to help with ap-petite suppression, as well as the Medi-Weightloss Clinics exclusivelyformulated Fat Burner and their nutri-tional Signature Products which allwork together to help people get theenergy boost that they need to be suc-cessful. Combined with supplementalinjections, like B1 and B6, which areproven to curb cravings, patients aregiven a huge advantage over someonewho is going at weight-loss alone.

This program is not a quick fixbut is designed to help people loseweight by changing their lifestyle. Pa-tients are guided through the pro-

gram, and are taught how to eat bet-ter, exercise, and live a healthierlifestyle so that when they are ready toleave the program, the weight staysoff.

After the initial consulta-tion, patients are put on a strict,low-calorie diet that is primarilyprotein based. For one week, pa-tients abstain from carbohy-drates and fat. Dr. Occhipintisays, Carbs turn into sugars, and the body selectively usessugar, and when the sugar isgone, it starts to burn fat. Thisexplains why some patients lose5-10 lbs in the first week alone, and about 20 in the first month. The doctor carefully monitorseach patient to document howmuch of their weight loss iswater and how much of it is fat.Throughout the process, the pa-tients health is consistently andcarefully monitored.

After the first week, the sec-ond phase begins. Dr. Occhip-inti says, In the second phasewe liberalize calories by addingcarbs and good fat to the diet, alldepending on the amount of ex-ercise a person is committed todoing. He adds, The second

phase is about changing the way youare doing things and changing your at-titude towards food.

    Patients meet with the doctor

every week to check-in, receive treat-ment, and to discuss the progress thathas been made. Studies show thatwhen people have the opportunity towork with a physician in this way, theyare more likely to be successful.

During the second phase, patientsgenerally lose between 2 1/2 4 lbsper week until they reach their goalweight, and once their goal weight isachieved, the third and final phase be-gins. The final phase is inexpensive andappointments become monthly as op-posed to weekly and are there to rein-force the program and to help patientsmake their new healthy lifestyle habitssomething that they will always takewith them.

Dr. Occhipinti and the staff at theTrinity Clinic work with patientsthroughout each phase, no matterhow long it takes. Patients can alsotrack their weight loss, find recipesthat work with each phase and checkout fitness tips and videos on theirMedi-Weightloss Clinics SignaturePatient Website.

Success StoriesDanika lost 72 pounds by going

to Medi-Weightloss Clinics, and shesays, What I love most about this

plan is that it is very easy to follow anddoesnt require too much effort. I ama full-time working mom of two chil-dren under two, and I felt a little de-spair at the notion of losing all of theweight I had to lose. In order for meto be successful, I knew my weightloss plan would have to be simple, easyto follow, and adaptable to a very busylifestyle.

Laura lost over 100 pounds, andsays, The staff at Medi-WeightlossClinics helped me realize that thisprogram is about a lifestyle change, not about just being on a diet. I tookthat lesson to heart, and have strivednot only to lose weight, but to changemy life.

The American Cancer Society hasan incredible nationwide programcalled Making Strides Against BreastCancer that raises awareness and cru-cial funds for breast cancer research, and Pasco County is having their 2ndannual Put On Your Pink BraMaking Strides Against BreastCancer walk on October 20th, 2012at The Shops at Wiregrass in WesleyChapel. This free, noncompetitive, 5kevent is a great way to show supportand make a difference in the fightagainst breast cancer.

Breast cancer is a disease that is af-fecting more and more of us. It is af-fecting or mothers, our wives, oursisters, our aunts, our friends, and evenour daughters. Breast cancer doesntdiscriminate, and women of all ages, races and creeds are being diagnosedevery day. In fact, The American Can-cer Society says that Florida ranks 2ndin the nation for (diagnosed) inci-dences of breast cancer, and is ranked3rd in the nation in mortality. Just to

be clear, that means that of the over15,000 women who are diagnosedwith the disease ever year, nearly 3,000actually die from it. Those are someshocking numbers, and that is why it isso important to be educated, to edu-cate the ones you love, be committedto early detection, and to find a cure.

The American Cancer Society orACS, is a trusted source for informa-tion on all kinds of cancer, and theirdedication to fighting cancer is morethan a marketing campaign. Their goalis to find, prevent, treat and cure thedisease. The ACS is the largest non-profit funder of cancer research next tothe federal government, and has beeninvolved in nearly every major break-through in the fight against this kindof cancer. For example, they fundedresearch into breast-conserving sur-gery, which is using lumpectomy plusradiation treatments, and they helpedto establish the mammogram as thebest way (and now very accessibleway) of detecting breast cancer early. They also were involved in discoveringlifesaving treatments such as hormoneblockers like Herceptin and Tamox-

ifen, which cansave lives. Inaddition tothese importantfindings, theACS has beeninvolved in thegenetic researchand the discov-ery of the can-cer-causingoncogenes andtumor-suppres-sor genes. These are just afew ways thatthe ACS truly makes a difference inthe fight against breast cancer. But allof the fancy terminology aside, TheAmerican Cancer Society is the onepeople turn to when they receive acancer diagnosis; in fact one in twowomen diagnosed with breast cancerwill turn to them for information andsupport.

The ACS offers all kinds of sup-port for women (and their families)who are diagnosed with cancer. In ad-dition to offering online informationand support, they offer programs likeRoad to Recovery, which helps peopleget the transportation that they needto see their doctors. They also have anamazing program called Hope Lodge, which gives cancer patients a place tostay when they are out of town fortreatment. Additionally, they helpwomen who are undergoing breastcancer treatment with their TLC Mag-alog, which is a catalog and magazinethat features helpful articles and offersaffordable items such as breastformsand wigs. Treatment information, op-tions and research are available 24hours a day on their website,www.cancer.org, and they also provide

programs at local hospitals where peo-ple can truly come together, know thatthey are not alone and receive care, support and even tips on how to feelbetter about themselves while goingthrough treatment. These are just afew ways in which The ACS makes animpact on cancer.

Come Show Your Support by Wear-ing Your Pink Bra!

Pasco Countys 2nd annual PutOn Your Pink Bra Making StridesAgainst Breast Cancer walk at TheShops at Wiregrass in Wesley Chapelon October 20 is one of 26 walks thatwill be taking place in Florida this Oc-tober. The Making Strides AgainstBreast Cancer walk is a lot of fun andis becoming famous for its pink bras! While wearing a pink bra is completelyvoluntary, people really enjoy comingtogether ahead of time, decoratingtheir bras, and wearing them at thewalk. breast cancer in 2011 and she hasshared her story of how quickly yourlife can be taken over by the diagnosis. She says, Time is everything whendealing with cancer. It was 36 daysfrom diagnosis to double mastectomyto confirmed staging (Stage 3). ForLinda, her strength to fight breast can-cer and the ability to raise awarenesshas increased her faith in God. Shesays, He has held my hand duringthis journey and shown me that evensomething as frightening as cancer canresult in good things; stronger bondswith family, new friendships and learn-ing that life doesnt end with a diagno-sis. She has been an inspiration tomany women who know her and gain

strength from her strength. This year Linda and her team,

Bosom Buddies, will be walking in theevent, and she encourages everyone tocome and participate. She says, Youcan join a team like mine, or you cancreate your own team and walk itseasy, its free, and it does make a differ-ence.

There are three ways to make areal difference at the Making Stridesfor Breast Cancer walk this October. You can walk (come on, its free!), youor your company can help to sponsorthe event, or you can join ACS CAN.Did you know that membership to theAmerican Cancer Society is only $10per year?

Get your friends to-gether, decorate some(extra large) pink bras, wear them over your shirtand walk proudly. Last yearpeople of all ages partici-pated in the event. Manymen even donned bras toshow support for thewomen they loved. Thepink bra makes the walk afun, entertaining, light-hearted way to band to-gether in support. More

than that, Linda adds, The pink bra isa symbol of femininity, and its impor-tant because many women dont feelbeautiful when they are going throughbreast cancer. Wearing your pink bra isempowering, and it makes you feelpretty again.

For anyone who loves someonegoing through breast cancer, theyknow that theres not a facet of lifethat is not touched by the diagnosis. Itis life-altering, and instantaneouslycancer becomes the uninvited guestaround the table at dinner, then linger-ing in your room at night keeping youup, and then refuses to leave. We dont know what causes breastcancer, but we do know a few impor-

tant facts. There is no cure, only treat-ment. This is a genetic disease, butmany people who are diagnosed donot know of anyone in their familywho have had it, and most importantlythat early detection is the key to sur-viving.

Linda says, It would be nice toone day not have to put on a pink brabecause weve found a cure for breastcancer. But until then, she will keepwalking. You can join Linda and thethousands of women like her in theirfight against breast cancer. Whetheryou walk, sponsor or join ACS CAN,you can make a difference at this yearsPut On Your Pink Bra MakingStrides Against Breast Cancer event.

James "Arry" Housh has been ac-tively involved in the roofing companyfor thirty years. Alongside his wifeBecky Housh and with the help oftheir two sons Stephen and Matthew,he runs the reputable Arry's Roofing,a company dedicated to providingquality craftsmanship and exceptionalcustomer service. The Housh family'sdedication has enabled Arry's Roofingto expand their small, honorable andtrustworthy family-run business intothe well-known and trusted companyit is today; servicing residential, com-mercial and industrial projects withvalue and integrity.

I recently spoke to Matt regard-ing metal roofing and the benefits itprovides homeowners. Arrys Roofingfully supports the advantages of metalroofing and is a specialist in metalroofing. Additionally, Arrys in-housecustom sheet metal shop allows themetal roofing specialists to customizeyour roof to be an exact fit for yourhouse and your designs.

Matt says, Metal roofing is more

of a craftsmanship and an art, similarto tile. In the early 2000s we saw theadvantages of metal roofing andstarted our metal roofing shop, trainedour guys specifically in metal roofingand began to create a reputation ofbeing metal roofing specialists.

Metal Advantages:Metal roofing is known to be ini-

tially more expensive than other roof-ing types at first glance, but in thelong run metal roofing can save home-owners money due to its durability, energy efficiency and ability to increasethe resale value of your home.

Matt explains that the averagelifespan of a non-metal roof is seven-teen years; whereas metal roofing isproven to last 2-3 times longer withfewer repairs than other types of roof-ing materials. When installed by quali-fied and skilled metal roof specialists, metal roofing can last for longer than50 years with little maintenance. Mattadds that a metal roof is extremelybeneficial, especially in Florida, be-cause there is no other roof compositethat is as strong and as durable as a

metal roof, which if installed properlycan effectively withstand the harshFlorida winds and storms.

If you are a homeowner and areseeking out a way to reduce the priceof your energy bill and would like tobuild a roof with energy-saving mate-rial, Arrys Roofing recommends youlook into getting a metal roof. Metalroofing is economically sustainable andbetter for the environment than manytraditional types of materials, such aspetroleum-based shingles. The instal-lation of reflective metal roofing cansave your home up to 40 percent incooling costs.

    Arry's Roofing is proactive and

innovative, keeping up to date in theindustry by furthering their educationregularly. Matt says, We use newproducts that are safe. By keeping ontop of what is offered, we are able tobring our customers cleaner, betterand safer products."

The company has all the knowl-edge necessary to help you find theright metal roof that will not only lookbeautiful on your home, but will alsobe an asset in saving money and cut-ting energy costs. Arrys Roofing hasanswers to any questions regarding theadvantages of metal roofing and is pre-pared to help you make the best deci-sions regarding your homes roof.

The Thousand Oaks develop-ment, located on the northwest cor-ner of Trinity Blvd. and Little Rd. inTrinity has been plagued with unex-pected flooding, dating back as far aslate 2002. But with the sheer amountof rain left behind from tropicalstorm Debby in June (10 to 16inches), streets were underwater forthree days, preventing many peoplefrom leaving their homes. Rains gotinside several homes and others hadwater inside their garage or on theirporch. Debby alone brought about16 inches of rain over three days anda series of storms over the next sev-eral weeks added another 10 inchesto the already saturated ground. Thatexceeded what officials call a 100-year-storm. (The 100-year flood ismore accurately referred to as the 1%Annual Exceedance ProbabilityFlood, since it is a flood that has a 1%chance of being equaled or exceededin any single year.)

Almost three months afterDebby, much of the standing water isgone, but the ground still remainssaturated and many area residentswere worried that Isaac was headingtheir way. Fortunately, there was noflooding reported in our area as a re-sult of tropical storm Isaac, butdecade-long difficulties at ThousandOaks still remain.

According to Stephen Bennett, who moved to Thousand Oaks in2002, The whole roadway cameapart the first year we were here. Wehad hubcap-sized potholes and rutsall over the place.

A study conducted by the countyin 2004 found that the roads inThousand Oaks were not built tocounty standards; they were built toolow because the developers used in-accurate ground water measurementstaken during a drought and werecompromised by rising groundwaterin certain areas, causing the ruts andpotholes in the roads throughout thecommunity. Some retention pondsfill up quickly and dont drain prop-

erly because they are a few feet lowerthan surrounding wetlands.

At the time, senior assistantcounty attorney Anthony Salzanosaid Pascos biggest concern is withthe design of Thousand Oaks roads, and the groundwater level engineerRay Gustafson chose as his baseline.Gustafson agreed that the unex-pected flooding may have been morethan the road could have withstood. And although the county has spentover $2 million over the past severalyears on smaller-scale storm water

improvements, those improvementsstart to fail when a storm exceeds the100-year-level. Officials say that theorigin of the problem began whenthe developer was allowed to buildhomes in the neighborhood thatwere several inches below the watertable.

Residents are up in arms over theflooding. Residents stormed Pascoscommissioners chambers recentlylooking for answers. Some Trinity-area residents said that they wouldvolunteer to hop aboard a bulldozer

to dig drainage ditches to avoid a re-peat of flooding after tropical stormDebby. The county needs to goahead and bulldoze the area fordrainage as an emergency measure, says Ron Levi, president of TrinityOaks Association and resident ofTrinity Oaks. Ill drive it, Levi saidabout operating a bulldozer.

Thousand Oaks and the nearbyTrinity Oaks neighborhoods are notsupposed to flood and thats whycounty commissioners were inun-dated with complaints. Somethinghas to be done, Levi told commis-

sioners. You cant just keep throw-ing the buck from one political placeto another political place.

Cortney King who lives inThousand Oaks says, This is a trav-esty. Its been allowed to happen andallowed to continue.

The Trinity Oaks and ThousandOaks communities sit at the bottomof a bowl in the Duck Slough water-shed. Those neighborhoods weresome of the hardest hit in Pasco byDebby and subsequent rainstorms. Apossible building moratorium in thearea of the Duck Slough watershed

appealed to homeowners. County of-ficials have been working on floodingproblems in the area since 2003. Theangry residents wondered: Why is afix taking so long? Its been morethan nine years. They want answers.Several residents called for legal ac-tion against the developer.

Resident Michael Styers, aFlorida Highway Patrol trooper says,Every time I hear the weather (re-port) I cringe.

Pasco County officials said theysympathize with residents frustra-tions but emphasized there is noquick solution to the problems thatplague the Thousand Oaks and Trin-ity Oaks communities. Permits formajor drainage projects could take along time to obtain. The countymust prove that flood control meas-ures wont harm more people thanthey help. The county wanted to ex-pedite deepening what appears to bean old drainage ditch from 30 to 40years ago, but federal authorities de-nied permission for dredging. In ad-dition, nobody quite knows whetherany drainage system can handle theincredible rainfall that Debbydumped on the area, said Annette

Doying, Pascos emergency manage-ment chief. The county also has tofind the money to build expensivedrainage projects. One pond severalyears ago cost about $12 million.

Last year, Pasco also asked theSouthwest Water Management Dis-trict (SWIFTMUD) for or permis-sion to dredge a canal through whatthe county believes is an already dis-turbed wetland, but SWIFTMUDdenied that request. However, lead-ership at SWIFTMUD has sincechanged, and county commissionershoping for a different result directedstaff to renew the countys dredgingrequest. The county and SouthwestFlorida Water Management Districtare checking to see whether floodcontrol facilities in the area werebuilt according to specifications inpermits. Michelle Baker, chief assis-tant country administration says,The county cannot simply drain theswamp. We are not allowed to dothat. She says the county is explor-ing both large-scale and smaller solu-tions. Staffers will determine whichoptions are cost effective, practical orable to qualify for a permit.
