Dear Faith Family,

Does anyone remember a

group from the 60’s called,

“Buffalo Springfield”? They

had a hit song entitled, “For

What It’s Worth”, which I

would never have

recognized. It was playing

today and I was singing

along to the haunting beat

and more familiar words of,

“Stop, children, what’s that

sound, everybody look

what’s going down.”

Sounding more familiar?

The song begins with these

enigmatic words,

“Something’s happening

here, but what it is ain’t

exactly clear”. I am

considering having these

words done up on a wood

sign, all fancy and artsy,

because they describe almost

every waking minute of life,

something is always

happening and usually it is

not very clear what it is! The

song continues with very

common themes of the 60’s –

angst, fear, division, youth vs

establishment, power - the

usual. It is 50 years since

this song was popular but it’s

beat and themes still resonate

in a powerful way for us

today.

Consider life at Trinity right

now as, ‘something’s

happening here, but what it is

ain’t exactly clear.’ This is a

true story! I have had the joy

and the weight of being in my

new role as Pastor for eleven

weeks. All eleven of those

weeks have coincided with the

new reality that we are a

congregation in transition.

We are moving. We do not

know where or even how for

sure, but we are moving.

There are more questions than

answers right now and people

are somewhat

‘ferschmiggled’**. Sounds

confusing and it is, that is the

reality of where we are, but

before you get too worked up

remember that it is also a

constant reality in the life of

God’s people as far back as

Abraham. God called

Abraham to leave the familiar,

the comfortable and go. Just

go. Abraham did not know

where he was going or what

life would be when he got

there, but he was called to

move and move he did! One

slow, halting step at a time,

Abraham moved in response

to God’s call. (Read Abe’s

full story in Genesis, chapters

12-25) You may think you

know Abraham’s story – trust

me and read it again!

Trinity’s story to date has

known challenge, blessing,

division, brokenness, healing,

times of fear and times of

trust. We are no different

than God’s people have

ever been. We are

capable of great

faithfulness led by God’s

Holy Spirit and we have

seen that, and we are

capable of great

brokenness, and we have

seen that too. We handle

fear best when we name it

and face it up front.

Words like go, move,

vision, transition, all

mean change! People do

not easily embrace change

so be gentle with yourself

in this time and even

more importantly, be

gentle and caring of your

brothers and sisters in

Christ during this time.

Let’s remember that we

are not alone in this

process because we have

each other and even more

importantly we have God.

When God gives a

command, issues a call,

summons His people to a

new thing, we can know

and be sure that God has

already prepared the way,

prepared the people, and

that God has a plan. Case

in point – Abraham. Abe

did not know where he

was going or what lay

ahead but God did!

Continued from page 1

God’s plan began before the

world itself and it was a plan

for good and for salvation. In

John 17:24 Jesus identifies this

in His words, “because you

loved me before the foundation

of the world.” God – Father,

Son and Holy Spirit, had a plan

and that plan was about what

Jesus did on the cross. God’s

plans for sinners are always

about Jesus, who paid the price

of sin, bought us back, and

sends us out that the world may

know Him and His eternal

love.

Back to my starting point,

“something’s happening here,

but what it is ain’t exactly

clear”, and that is okay! We

are moving, baby step by baby

step. We are praying. We are

listening. We are wrestling

together in God’s Word, and

with each other; and we will

continue to do so as God leads

us forward to what is next for

Trinity Lutheran in Brooks,

AB. As your Pastor I implore

you, beg you, entreat you to get

into the Word of God. Study,

pray, ponder, talk, vision, -

together, intentionally seeking

the common good of all and

faithfulness to the Gospel! As

your Pastor I beg you also to be

kind and forgiving of each

other (and of our Council and

of me) and look for the humour

in each situation, for laughter

heals much. Let us seek the

equipping of the gifts of the

Spirit found in Galatians 5:22-

26, “By contrast, the fruit of

the Spirit is love, joy, peace,

patience, kindness, generosity,

faithfulness, gentleness, and

self-control. There is no law

against such things. And those

who belong to Christ Jesus

have crucified the flesh with its

passions and desires. If we

live by the Spirit, let us also be

guided by the Spirit. Let us not

become conceited, competing

against one another, envying

one another.”

We do not know where we are

going – but we are willing to

find out.

We do know Who is leading

us, and with the Spirit’s help

we will follow.

We have Christ’s promise bold

and sure – “Lo, I am with you

always, even to the end of the

age.” Matthew 28:20

“Stop, children, what’s that

sound, everybody look what’s

going down”, let’s stop, wait,

listen, look and . . . move, as

God directs our steps.

In the weight and the joy of

ministry,

Pastor Maggie

Many of you already know Anzelle

Muller, and have watched her grow and

mature into the very capable and joyful

young woman she is today. Trinity’s

Board of Education and our Pastoral

Staff are excited to announce that

Anzelle has accepted our job offer to

serve as Trinity’s first Summer Intern.

She has been active in youth group (is the

current President), regular at Bible Study

and in Worship, and willing to serve and

share the love of Jesus wherever God

leads. Anzelle is graduating from St.

Joseph’s Collegiate this month and will

be serving approximately 16-20 hours a

week over the summer. She will be

involved primarily in Children’s and

Youth ministries such as Vacation Bible

School week and follow up, summer

activities, fall youth planning with our

youth and new Youth Advisory

Committee, etc. and will be helping

Pastor Maggie while Pastor John is off

on his reduced time. This is a first for

our congregation and we invite your

prayer support for her and for the

congregation. We encourage you to take

the opportunity to affirm and welcome

Anzelle into her new position.

With Thanksgiving to God,

Quilters

The Quilters have been very busy

this year with cutting, piecing,

sewing and tying a total of 220

quilts and 31 baby layettes.

While a portion of the quilts were

sold most were packaged up and

sent to various ministries in

Southern Alberta and around the

world. 35 quilts were sent to the

Mustard Seed, 35 were sent to Inn

From the Cold and to Canadian

Lutheran World Relief 42 quilts

along with the 31 layettes. A few

quilts are kept here at the church to

assist anyone in need.

Our quilters truly bless people all

over the world using the gifts God

has given them.

Trinity Lutheran Church

Quilters are in need of more

fabric suitable for making quilt

tops. If you have an unused stash

of fabric from earlier sewing /

quilting days, please consider

donating it to be beautifully used

for charity quilts. We are also

happy to receive colored and

patterned bed sheets (both flat and

fitted). These can be used for quilt

backs or cut into squares for quilt

tops. Thank you to everyone for

your ongoing support of this

mission and ministry.

Dear Faith Family,

The fresh air of spring

holds such promise as

we dream of warmer

days, longer hours to

enjoy the sunshine and

time with family and

friends. At the same

time we are already

lifting our voices in

prayer for northern

Alberta communities

where the devastation

of fires rage on. I

encourage you to spend

time praying for the

communities facing

disaster, for the beauty

of God’s creation, for

the welfare of all of

God’s critters and for

the first responders and

fire fighters gathering

from across Canada to

answer the call for help

and relief. I came

across this article

highlighting Fire

Chaplains and was

struck by their crucial

role all over the world.

I am very fond of one

Fire Chaplain in

particular and I am

aware of the difference

this presence makes in

the lives of those who

answer the call to help

others in need.

Chaplains need our

prayers and our

appreciation and so I

ask you to please have a

read and include Fire

Chaplains in your

prayers as summer

approaches.

With thankfulness,

Pastor Maggie

From Paris to

Boston, the Crucial

Role of Fire

Chaplains

By Wendy Cadge and

Michael Skaggs, both of

Brandeis University

Chaplain of the Paris

Fire Brigade, Jean-Marc

Fournier, is credited with

saving several items of

great significance – such

as the crown of thorns –

from the Cathedral of

Notre Dame as it burned.

Previously a military

chaplain in Afghanistan,

Fournier also cared for

survivors from the 2015

terrorist rampage at the

Bataclan in Paris that

killed more than 100

people.

Fournier is not alone in

placing himself at great

risk in service of others.

Mychal Judge, the first

casualty of 9/11, was a

Catholic chaplain to the

New York City Fire

Department.

Although rarely seen by

those on the outside, fire

departments across the

country include

chaplains. They provide

care to firefighters,

family members and

members of the public in

a range of crucial ways.

Regardless of their own

faith background, they

typically work with

people of all faiths and

beliefs, outside of

traditional congregations

or parishes.

The chaplaincy

context

Historically chaplains

were required in the

military, federal prisons

and the Veterans

Administration.

But as congregations

shrink and growing

numbers of Americans

move away from

organized religion, it is

chaplains that are often

doing the work of

spiritual care.

Chaplains these days are

mostly present in health

care settings such as

hospices, hospitals and

some nursing facilities

where people are more

likely to need end-of-life

spiritual care.

They are also to be seen

in airports, seaports, car

racetracks and in areas

where disasters have

struck. There are

chaplains even for pets

and their owners.

Some chaplains have

graduate degrees and

extensive clinical

training while others

may not.

Fire chaplains in

Massachusetts

As scholars of

contemporary religion

and its practice, we

interviewed 65 chaplains

in a range of sectors over

the past three years and

spent time with fire

chaplains who work

across the greater Boston

area.

The Boston Fire

Department appointed

its first chaplains in the

early 1900s and since

then chaplains have

served continually in the

Mass Corps of Fire

Chaplains. Over the

course of the 20th

century, several of them

have put themselves at

great risk to serve

firefighters and others in

need.

During the 1942 fire in

Boston’s popular

Coconut Grove

nightclub in which more

Page 7: Trinity Volume 3, Issue 6 Times · the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and -control. There is no law against such things. And

Trinity Times Page 7 of 15

than 450 were killed and

160 injured, chaplains

were a steady presence

and served in whatever

way was most helpful.

In another devastating

fire in Hotel Vendome in

1972, in which nine

firefighters died, James

Keating, Catholic

chaplain to the fire

department, crawled into

holes dug in the rubble

to administer last rites to

two of the firemen who

had died in the collapse.

In 1973, Father Daniel

Mahoney provided

support at Logan Airport

when a flight crashed,

killing all 89 on board.

In 1983, Father Maloney

entered Temple Tifereth

Israel in Everett to save

the precious Torah

scrolls during a fire.

Like Fournier in Paris,

he took an extraordinary

risk to save religious

items. Massachusetts

Corps of Fire Chaplains

later honored him for his

distinguished service.

The emotional work

Fire chaplains also serve

firefighters and their

families when they are

sick, getting married or

have other needs.

In our interviews, one

fire chaplain described

blessing the bodies of

firefighters killed in the

line of duty and

accompanying their

families and coworkers

through memorial

services and months of

grief. He explained how

chaplains try “to bring

some solace,” when

there is loss of life

during a fire. “Whether

it’s through prayer or

just chatting with them

or blessing a body – the

whole entire reverence

that takes place at that

time is important,” he

said.

Chaplains help

firefighters cope with

other difficulties as well.

Witnessing injuries,

losing colleagues in the

line of duty, or

recovering the remains

of fire victims all take an

enormous emotional and

mental toll on

firefighters.

“Chiefs appreciate our

role,” one reflected, “I

look at the scene and I

have been around long

enough to assess this is

going to be a three-hour

operation so it is worth

rolling the rehab truck

up.”

Sometimes this includes

being a resource for fire

victims. One chaplain

remembered a time

when the fire had been

put out and everyone

was ready to leave. He

said, “And there is one

man who lived there and

he was waiting,” as the

Red Cross had not

shown up yet. He

recalled thinking,

“I can’t walk away and

just leave this man here

by himself. So I sat there

with him for like almost

two hours before the

Red Cross finally came.

No one even really knew

that I did that and that is

one of the things we do.

We are silently there and

do what needs to be

done.”

Chaplains are a central,

if often overlooked,

element of the changing

American religious

landscape.

service is a reminder of

the role many play.

Youth Sponsors/Advisory Group

“Remember your Creator in the days of your

youth.” - Ecclesiastes 12:1

The Board of Education is working to create an

actively involved group of parents and caring

adults to work with our youth to create a

Calendar of Events for the 2019/2020 year.

This team will be approximately 5 – 8 in

number. These people will meet with our

Summer Intern, Anzelle Muller, the junior and

senior youth, new youth executive, and through

conversation and planning put together activities

and events for the coming year. They will then

take responsibility to make sure each month’s

scheduled events happen – overseeing the

details such as drivers, food, youth-led

devotions, chaperones, etc. In light of Pastor

Maggie’s increased duties, the purpose of this

group will be to foster greater involvement and

consistency for our youth so that they may grow

in their faith, deepen their relationships with

other young people of faith, and continue to be a

vital part of our ministry here at Trinity and

beyond. If you would like more information

about this group’s purpose or have an interest in

how you might assist with it, please speak to a

member of the Board of Education, Leta Babb,

Brandi McCord and Charlene Musgrove or to

Pastor Maggie. The hope is to do some work

over the summer so that activities can begin in

September!

Thank you to each

our recent Prayer Vigil.

Many of you were able

to come and spend time

many of you found a

place to pray right

where you were. We

lifted our voices and

our hearts to our God

on behalf of our

congregation,

community, ministries,

The Deacons and

Pastoral Staff are very

much wanting to be

sure that we continue

with a constant stream

of prayer during this

transitional time, and as

such we are seeking

people who would be

willing to be a part of a

‘Transition Prayer

Team’. If you would

be willing to serve

Christ and His Church

by serving on this team,

please give your name

to the church Office

(403 362-4259) or

speak to Pastor Maggie

or one of our Deacons

by the end of June. Our

Deacons are Rhea

Lynne Anderson, Laura

Marie Elgersma and

Harold Stedel. Our

hope is to bring all

interested people

together to meet each

other. Then, as a group

decide a loose

framework, what

resources they might

require, and how they

would be most

comfortable praying.

The sole goal here is to

involve all who are

willing, to blanket our

congregation in prayer,

keeping us ever mindful

that we are God’s

people and God in His

wisdom is guiding us

forward. Over the

summer months prayer

can arise wherever you

are – let’s begin as soon

as we can, grasping

boldly the promise God

gives to His people.

“If any of you lacks

wisdom, you should ask

God, who gives

generously to all

without finding fault,

and it will be given to

you.” James 1:5

May the Lord move

you to prayerfully

consider serving at this

time and in this way!

Some disciples of John

the Baptist were

questioning him about

the baptism and

preaching of Jesus.

Many disciples were

going to Jesus instead

of John the Baptist.

John the Baptist

answers: “A person

cannot receive even

one thing unless it is

given him from

heaven” (John 3:27).

John the Baptist says

this to show that Jesus,

His teaching, and His

baptism are from

heaven. God provides

everything we have in

body and soul.

We are taught this in

the meaning of the

Apostles’ Creed in the

Small Catechism.

In the First Article of

the Creed, we learn that

God has made us and

everything in the

universe.

“He has given me my

body and soul, eyes,

ears, and all my

members, my reason

and all my senses, and

still takes care of them.

He also gives me

clothing and shoes,

food and drink, house

and home, wife and

children, land, animals,

and all I have. He

richly and daily

provides me with all

that I need to support

this body and life. He

defends me against all

June 2019 Stewardship Article danger and guards and

protects me from all evil.

All this He does only out

of fatherly, divine

goodness and mercy,

without any merit or

worthiness in me. For all

this it is my duty to thank

and praise, serve and

obey Him.”

In the Second Article of

the Creed, we learn that

God sent His Son, Jesus,

to humble Himself by

taking the form of a

servant.

In so doing, He “has

redeemed me, a lost and

condemned person,

purchased and won me

from all sins, from death,

and from the power of the

devil; not with gold or

silver, but with His holy,

precious blood and with

His innocent suffering

and death, that I may be

His own and live under

Him in His kingdom and

serve Him in everlasting

righteousness, innocence,

and blessedness, just as

He is risen from the dead,

lives and reigns to all

eternity.”

In the Third Article of the

Creed, we learn that the

fruits of what Jesus

Christ, the Son of God,

did are given to us

through the work of the

Holy Spirit in the Church.

“That I cannot by my

own reason or strength

believe in Jesus Christ,

my Lord, or come to

Him; but the Holy Spirit

has called me by the

Gospel, enlightened me

with His gifts, sanctified

and kept me in the true

faith. In the same way He

calls, gathers, enlightens,

and sanctifies the whole

Christian church on earth,

and keeps it with Jesus

Christ in the one true

faith. In this Christian

church He daily and

richly forgives all my sins

and the sins of all

believers. On the Last

Day He will raise me and

all the dead, and give

eternal life to me and all

believers in Christ.”

Indeed, “a person cannot

receive even one thing

unless it is given him

from heaven.”

But how easy is this for

us to forget? How easy is

it for us to think that what

we have in life is because

we have earned it?

How easy is it for us to

forget that all our skills –

the abilities of our hands

and minds, the ethic to

work diligently, and the

desire to improve – is

given to us from heaven,

just as John the Baptist

said?

How easy is it for us to

forget that it is Christ

alone, and the work of the

Holy Spirit, that reveals

His salvation to us,

delivers it to us, and that

none of this is our doing?

Sure, we have

responsibility for coming

to church, for delving into

God’s Holy Word, and

for praying without

ceasing.

But even these

responsibilities are given

to us from heaven. These

duties are not earned;

they are given in response

to what He has

accomplished for us.

Everything we have, and

everything we are – in

both body and soul – are

gifts from God in heaven.

Let us then respond in

thanksgiving and give

back to Him as He asks –

with a first-fruits,

generous proportion

offering of what He has

given to us.
