CCTC’S TIM HARDEE IS APPOINTED PRESIDENT OF SC TECHNICAL COLLEGE SYSTEM

On Monday, September 19, the South Carolina Technical College System announced that Central Carolina Technical College President Dr. Tim Hardee will serve as the next President for the South Carolina Technical College System. “CCTC is delighted that one of our own was chosen for this statewide leadership role and wishes Dr. Hardee the very best in this distinguished new direction,” said J. Mac Summers, Chairman of the Central Carolina Technical College Area Commission.

Hardee has served over 30 years in education in South Carolina, including 15 at Central Carolina Technical College. He has been honored by Coastal Carolina University with the Outstanding Alumni award as well as the Sumter Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Achievement Award. Prior to entering higher education administration 15 years ago, he served as a teacher, coach, counselor, principal and administrator on the K-12 level.

With a B.S. in Psychology from Coastal Carolina University, Hardee also holds an M.Ed. in Counselor Education and an Ed.D. in Educational Administration from the University of South Carolina. He currently serves as a member of the South Carolina Workforce Development Board and is a graduate of the South Carolina Economic Development Institute, the Furman Diversity Leaders Institute, and Leadership South Carolina.

Farewell to Chantalle Davis

Chantalle Davis began her journey at Central Carolina Technical College during the summer semester of 2015. She has been working toward an Associate of Arts degree, but her true passion is writing. Chantalle excelled in her classes and eventually she became an English tutor for the TRiO SSS program. In addition to her coursework and duties as a tutor, she serves the LPD council as the Events Coordinator. She has attended multiple leadership conferences and various other events with the LPD council. Chantalle has also served as a TRiO Ambassador and helped at many events that CCTC has hosted. She has been an excellent leader and a wonderful role model for many of our TRiO students to emulate. Chantalle may be leaving us, but she has left a lasting impression. As she prepares for her journey back to New Jersey to continue her education and be with family, I hope everyone has a chance to wish her well and reminisce about the good times we had together.

Each semester, the TRiO program takes a group of students to tour two colleges that offer great opportunities for Bachelor’s Degrees. The goal of these trips are to expose the students to new thoughts, ideas, and to open new possibilities. This Fall semester we traveled to The Citadel in Charleston, SC and the Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, GA.

The Citadel

On Friday, September 23, 2016, TRiO students were given an opportunity to take a tour of the Citadel in Charleston, SC. The Citadel is a landmark in Charleston, SC that is noted for its educational reputation as well as its rich history. Founded in 1842, The Citadel has an undergraduate student body of about 2,300 students who make up the South Carolina Corps of Cadets. Another 1,000 students attend The Citadel Graduate College, a civilian evening program that offers graduate and professional degrees.

In addition to touring the campus, we were able to visit the Citadel Archives and Museum in the Daniel Library on campus. The museum charts the military college’s path from its 1842 founding to the present. Exhibits include past cadet uniforms, the long-lost sword of Confederate Col. Charles Courtney Tew and other memorabilia. A timeline in the museum marks major milestones, including The Citadel’s move to its current campus along the Ashley River in 1922. It ends with a tribute to the June 2015 massacre at Emanuel AME Church, where nine black worshippers were killed during Bible study. One of the victims, Myra Thompson, earned two Masters in Education degrees from The Citadel Graduate College. Cynthia Hurd, another victim, worked part-time in Daniel Library.

We were also privileged to see the cadets practicing drill with a Retreat Parade. Drill procedures and movements on the parade field are identical to the tactical maneuvers employed on the battlefield in the past. Modern day ceremonies are conducted to inspect troops, render honors, preserve tradition, and foster espirit de corps.

Savannah College of Art and Design

On Friday, November 4, 2016 a group of about 20 TRiO students and staff boarded a bus for a long trip down to Savannah, GA to visit and tour Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD). Several of our students are interested in a career in fashion design, video game design, and creative writing. SCAD was founded in 1978 by Richard G. Rowan, Paula Wallace, May L. Poetter and Paul E. Poetter to provide college degree programs not previously available in southeast Georgia and to create a professional art college to attract students from throughout the United States and abroad. The curriculum was established with the goals of excellent arts education and effective career preparation for students. Today, with locations in Savannah, Atlanta, Hong Kong, Lacoste, France and online distance education offerings, SCAD continues to pursue these goals. The College offers 40 different programs of study ranging from video game design to fashion merchandising to Art History and equestrian studies.

Located in downtown Savannah, SCAD is surrounded by an incredible amount of history. After touring the college and visiting the art museum on campus, we climbed aboard a trolley for a guided tour of historic Savannah. Our tour guide drove us through the grand streets of old Savannah and told stories of the underground railroad, civil war, the cotton trade, hauntings, and many, many other stories of people and events from the

past. Savannah is a fascinating city that gives a feeling of stepping back 200 years into history. We returned to Sumter knowing we had experienced something special.

(LPD) News

LPD Council Elects New Vice President

The Leadership and Professional Council of TRIO Student Support Services has appointed a new Vice President for the 2016-2017 academic year. Mr. Jedidiah Mayrant has gladly accepted this leadership position with the desire to implement the goals and values of the TRIO Leadership Council. Mr. Mayrant is entering into his final year at CCTC and plans to pursue his Bachelor Degree in Criminal Justice. Jedidiah will serve alongside a slate of other LPD Executive Council – Mr. Shaquan Brown (President) and Ms. Margaret Nelson (Secretary).

The Leadership and Professional Development Council would like to send well wishes to Ms. Chantalle Davis, who has served as the Events Coordinator. Chantalle is moving back to New Jersey to continue her education and be with family. We all wish her great success in this new chapter of her life. Thank you Chantalle for all your wonderful contributions to the LPD Council!

Skate Night 2016

On Tuesday, November 22, The Leadership and Professional Council went to Skate Station in Sumter, SC for a night of skating and fun. A group of TRIO students came out to enjoy the fun. From watching some of us lose our balance and fall down on skate floor to watching those that are more experienced dancing and speed skating – this night was a blast that we shall not forget. Tune in for more fun opportunities to hang out with the Leadership and Professional Development Council. More skating and bowling fun coming in the Spring of 2017!

Final Exam Survivor

Every year as “Finals Season” approaches, TRiO hosts a workshop called Final Exam

Survivor. This workshop is more casual than our normal workshops and provides

students a relaxing atmosphere to help prepare for exams. In addition to providing

snacks, drinks, and seasonal music, this workshop highlights a few different studying

methods that can give students the upper hand during their final exams. We had a

great turnout this year and everyone seemed to really enjoy the event. We gave away

raffle tickets to attendees which entered them in a drawing for door prizes. This year’s

door prize winners were: Shaquan Brown, Shane Davidson, Jeanette Robinson, Lateia

Robinson and Tiffany Wilson.

Remind 101 is a free communication platform that was originally designed for teachers to

safely and efficiently communicate with students and parents. TRiO SSS has adopted this

program for a similar purpose. We will use Remind 101 to share important information with

our TRiO students such as upcoming workshops, prize winners, campus visitation details,

meetings with counselors, etc.. Remind 101 is a very safe platform because there is no

exchange of personal information. When students signs up for Remind 101, their phone

numbers will be anonymous and inaccessible by TRiO staff or other students. Remind 101

also saves all communication history in an easily viewable log for tracking purposes.

This program analyzes

financial stress, credit card

use, budgeting, long and

short term financial goals,

loan paybacks, etc. The

program is set in several

segments to meet the goal of

understanding finances.

to the TRiO office to receive

credit for completing the

requirement.

Studies have shown that

financial stress can have

negative consequences

ranging from reduced

academic achievement to

dropping out of school.
